This was the first issue of Nintendo Power that I read. August 1992 if I remember correctly.

I was a Nintendo kid back in the day, and I loved early 90s Nintendo power. Tips, tricks, learning about new Nindendo games, NP was awesome. I know it went downhill around the mid/late 90s, but I still love what NP did for me in the pre-internet era.

Subscribed to this magazine from issue 1 to the end but was always annoyed by their style. They would constantly shit on Sega and Nintendo and never acknowledged their successes, always praised Sony and PC devs, and any new game Next Gen approved of was always called the "greatest _______ EVER." Pretentious games journalism before pretentious games journalism was cool.

I don't know if it was UK only but we had a ps1 mag with pretty decent humour in, and lots of bikini girls in too. They had a section called 'the jap eye' that talked about up coming Japanese games. No a clue what it was called

Where I live there were only two game magazines when I was a kid.
Super Game, which was kinda biased towards nintendo) and Game Power, which was biased towards sega.
One day they both announced that they would merge to become SUPER GAME POWER.

That shit got me so hyped. It became a big ass thick magazine.

I didn't get into gaming mags until '97 because I was always a generation behind before then. Picked up the September '97 Game Informer at Funcoland to find all about FF7, and the rest is history. There were definitely still some good ones from that time though. PSM was great, and I feel had a better connection with their fanbase in the first few years. Gamefan and Gamer's Republic were great for the more niche games/interests, and there was always some new quirky game/anime I'd discover through them. I only had a few issues of Ultra GamePlayers but I really liked the balance I felt they achieved. Next Generation had a bit of an elitist angle (and were super biased toward Sega at that point), but despite that they had good taste in the things they'd cover, even if they were often wrong with their predictions. Game Informer maintained a level of quality for awhile, but there was never anything truly remarkable about it.

GamePro was pretty bad, EGM was okay, OPM was okay but I got it anyway for the Demo Disc. Nintendo Power was fine, but overrated (I get the feeling they were a lot better previously).

Started subbing to NP around issue 70-something, has the anubis guy from stargate on the cover. Canx'd around 130-something because I didn't have any of the newer nintendo consoles. Just donated 101 and up to a local library cuz dad's selling the house and I got no room in my tiny apartment. Kept the others though. Such a comfy magazine.
