From last thread: the upcoming Mythbusters episode will touch the enigma regarding how much a person can carry weapon-wise; they used classic Doom sounds for the trailer episode but they will be using Doom 3 graphics as reference. Weird, I know.

Also Romero took part in a very interesting series of videos regarding his levels and Doom. Pretty well informed regarding source-ports and community wads.

You can finally upload stuff to /idgames again, seems like Ty took care of the issue.

played it in gzdoom and on skill 3 with no mods, here is some feedback

As to the secrets:
the lionhead in the center room with the chaingunners
The lionhead switch to gain access to the teleport can be used to get to a secret vista.
A purposefully cryptic manner of shooting a dimly lit head and using the dead body in the center access a way to a secret yellow key

yeah, as I said, few months ago, wanted it to be an episode, or maybe even a megawad, but life caught up to me and I was in big shit when it comes to money.
now situation is a bit better and I decided to do a megawad with some custom stuff that will include shitload of maps I have made in past 10 years from various engines, remixed to fit doom. maybe I will throw there a new monster or two, who knows?

its optional, and it guards key to the secret, that was sorta the point of the room, not being fair, but having a good payoff

when I have posted it the first time everyone was bitching about not having enough shells, so I have added some more around nukage area, if you want even more shells, you gotta grab the yellow key and go through secret, this will give you also a blue key and will reveal additional enemies, shotgunners and pinkies mostly.

I think it depends on whether the person played the PS1 version first or not. I played the DOS version first, so I prefer the original soundtrack. I like the PS1 version's ambience, but it doesn't sit as well with me--in contrast to Doom 64, which had much more room to make use of it with its own identity.

Some thoughts:
- Difficulty was a little frontloaded. The ambush in the yellow key room was a good idea, but the arachnotron doesn't seem to be able to get a good angle on the player to really trap them between itself and the revenant/PE. The cacodemon is too slow to trap.
- Health/ammo balance was solid, but the blue armor makes it too easy. Downgrade it to a green armor or find something to replace it with.

The architecture was nice but the map was overall too cramped for my taste. Good first effort tho, keep experimenting and posting future stuff.

Brutal Doom changes the invisibility sphere into a friendly marine that helps you once you rescue him.

no this is confusing. there are three vanilla/limit-removing complevels because there are three versions of the vanilla v1.9 binary exe, which have slight differences and thus need different complevels:

- shareware/registered doom and commercial doom2;
- ultimate doom (support for episode 4)
- final doom (support for tnt/plutonia, and the infamous teleporter height setting)

they all record demos with the same version number (109) so the engine has to guess which complevel to play back a v109 demo. this is done by looking at the IWAD. if you have the ultimate doom IWAD then the engine plays back doom1 demos at complevel 3, so it makes sense to record doom1 demos on complevel 3.

of course the casual recorder does not need to know any of this, just remember to use -complevel 2 for doom2 maps (MAPxx) -complevel 3 for doom1 maps (ExMy) and -complevel 4 when using tnt/plutonia as your IWAD (so in practice, almost never)

So. After a bit of discussion and a SHITLOAD of mulling over, I have come to some important GMOTA decisions, hopefully for the last fucking time for Blaz:

>POW for subweapons will be taken if you get melee'd or shot with wyvern flames, homing revenant boners, Mage Gunner charge shots/missiles, and other future monsters with powerful projectiles

>Item crashes will consume a new resource, and this resource's max limit can be raised from backpacks. Shield dashing will still use arcane energy because you gotta go fast.

>Wimpy boomerang sword throws are probably going to be removed, super homing throws will become the new powered sword utility.

What tool do you guys use to make sprites? Just use paint or gimp? Also i've been a long time pencil/paper kind of guy. Is there a good way I can scan in drawings I make with pencil/paper then work off that? Third question, should I keep the sprites about what the orginal doom sprites are at around 50-70 pixels tall and 30-40 wide? I want that pixely retro look. Not a piratedoom look.

I'm not a good spriter, but I use photoshup.

Eriance had a tutorial about how to do that, but all the images are broken.
Suffice to say, yes, there is a way--I believe it boiled down to "draw outlines/basic details of all the frames on paper, scan it in, draw over it in photoshup".

Whatever you're comfortable with. You can scale down sprites you made at a larger size via the actor, which is different from normal Photoshup scaling because all the pixels are left intact--they're just made smaller.
For demonstration, pictured is the Yakuza enemy from DemonSteele.
From left to right, it's Doomguy, Yakuza scaled down to match Doomguy's height, and the original sprite size.

Just keep in mind that the smaller the sprite size, the harder it is to take care of finer details.

That was something I made for fun. But it has got me thinking for the pain elemental:

A winged slime that drops slimelets on you, when "killed" it losses the wings and bounces after you, when struck and flinched it'd bleed out extra slimlings, so weak rapid fire attacks would be a bad idea.

post mortem-- had to take off my boots because it was making my rocket jumps too short. farming skulls with the vampyre master trait is a lifesaver. the "gunkatana" pistol was surprisedly good even without any pistol traits. its full auto mode was too inaccurate to be useful though. gothic armor sucks. too maddenly slow, and pretty much cancel out rocketjumps.

I still remember the first time I played Doom. It was a few months after launch and our local computer shop was demoing it at our little town's teen fair. They had it hooked up to a VR helmet they were selling at the time and I think the line to play it was longer than anything else going on that day. The VR was typical shitty 90s fair, but jesus christ it still blew me the fuck away. I was a big fan of Blake Stone and Wolf3d, but this was so much better. I got a copy of my own a year or so later, but I missed out on the early modding scene since I didn't have internet. Oddly, Doom has never aged for me. It still impresses me the same as it did 20 years ago. The great community behind it that has kept it going all these years later has only made it more enjoyable and I'm thrilled whenever I can add to it in any way.

this is just a bunch of weird shapes really, more or less randomly textured. but it can be surprisingly nasty at times. it has a small number of garishly coloured new textures, which are slightly remindful of plutonia.

(after playing this random idgames choice, i discovered there seems to be a later version of the wad at remains2.zip, which contains a few more levels)

I mean, you just open the oblige WAD in SLADE, check the name of the watermark textures and then you create some new textures with the same name, put them in a custom WAD (name it NoWater.wad for example), and then load it after your OBLIGE wad

Chocolate Doom is accurate to vanilla, which makes it a good choice for recording demos on vanilla maps, and playtesting vanilla maps.

Some purists also feel it aint Doom anymore without the capped 35 frames, original blurry 320x200 resolution, and engine limits.


I personally prefer using PrBoom-plus for old school play, since it can have higher resolutions, removes limits, and grants access to Boom/MBF wads.

My father went to work one morning and he left the computer running idle.

I was 5. Now 25. I never stopped playing doom. It scared me shitless at first and couldn't play it alone. I remember killing the first sergeant in e1m1 and then closing the game.

I started watching tutorials on how to use doom builder 2 yesterday. I can't even start to explain how happy I feel when I test my shitty map to check which texture I missed this time.
