My Saturn hasn't gotten much love lately. None of the local shops seem to have any stock to speak of and I'm weird about buying things online, but I don't want to neglect one of my favorite systems.

Say, what do you guys think is the best solution for playing Japanese Saturn games in the US? Cart? Modchip? Import a JP Saturn?

>> No.2185586

just get an action replay, which has all the utilities you could ever need.

I'd also recommend a modchip because fuck paying for actual saturn games (unless you hate your own money or something). Of course, you don't need a modchip if you feel like doing the disc swap trick every time. And I also heard that people designed custom firmware that you flash to the action replay which allows you to play burned games without a modchip, so I'd look into that because that'd be cool

>> No.2185587

>>2185575
Because disc swapping becomes a gigantic chore after a while.

It's simpler to just put the disc in and play, than to put the disc in, swap it to read the security ring, swap it back to play the disc, on every single game boot.

It's why I also prefer using normal memory and 4mb carts instead of an Action Replay - that thing has a piece of shit menu.

>> No.2185595

fuck hotswapping. I'm not even concerned with wearing out the motor or anything, it's just a pain in the ass. I'd gladly spend 30-40 bucks on a modchip if it means I don't have to worry about doing that whole satanic ritual every time I start a game.

I have a binder filled with CD-Rs of mostly every saturn game and I have no problems getting a modchip and not worrying about it.

I'd do hotswapping if I had no other choice, but there are alternatives and so I don't bother. When I first hacked my wii, the only way to run burned games was to load a corrupt save on twilight princess, walk backwards, crash the game, boot up a file for the backup launcher, switch discs, and play. And I was okay with doing that every time I wanted to play a burned game. But then other methods became available and I used simpler methods instead. Is this also laziness?

>Though I have a model 1 saturn, I think the swapping method is different for model 2s.

They are the same for all models, the LED just helps a bit. However you can easily time it according to the motor sound, since it has to go back and forth all the way to the disc.

>>2185604
>Not to mention the action replay makes swapping even easier since it stops the disc.

For me it was harder to swap with an Action Replay because it made the timing much tighter.

Dude has a public blog. Just leave a comment there.

>Also hows does it boot games?

As if you had an original CD in the drive.

>Is there a menu or something to choose the game?

No, you put the games in numbered folders, and you can skip to the next one with a button on the pcb, while the machine is running (It acts as if you opened the lid, changed discs, closed the lid). Later versions may have two buttons so you can skip back as well, not just forward only.

>Hows the compatibility?

Out of hundreds of games tested, only two have problems with the latest firmware - one of them doesn't play cd audio music, the other doesn't boot.

>Do you need a mod chip?
no, and it also bypasses region protection if you want it to.

So it''s a simple as opening the cd tray and hitting the button. Cool.

The loading times are okay on the Saturn port, not any worse than other games from the era. And definitely better than the Playstation version which stops the game mid-level for loading.

What makes the Saturn Metal Slug an awful port is the slowdown. It is constant, non-stop slowdown.

errr no that's not how it works. They still have to copy shit from external memory to main memory to video memory; and while they do that half the system is locked down. Reading lots of frames from external memory = less time to actually draw those frames. Metal Slug required lots of memory access due to shitbillions of sprites on the screen.

Games like Vampire Savior instead loaded most gfx from main memory, and put all the crap like main menu, character select, cutscene art, music, voices, in the cart. Stuff that is infrequently accessed, but when it is needed, it is needed fast.

They are both okay. The second game has jarring slowdown on the Saturn, but has less bullshit difficulty and you can actually play it just for kicks instead of needing Touhou-level pattern memorizations.

First game has more kickass 2d graphics, but, remember to play it in TATE mode or else it will miss out quite a lot of effects (the game abused linescroll a lot, and you can't replicate all those effects in yoko mode as column scroll cannot be done on a per-pixel basis).
I dare say that it pushes some of the most impressive linescroll effects I've ever seen though. More impressive than Darius Gaiden too. Maybe only Radiant Silvergun surpasses it, and that one used multilayer "Mode7" backgrounds instead of linescroll, even doing per-pixel column scroll with that trick.

Just play the game. The framerate drops all the time. One second the game is silky smooth, then it gets all choppy. I think the speed does keep up though, which makes the choppiness all the worse. You are right in that slowdown happens less often though, I think only when you use a bomb, I'd have to check the game to be sure. But it does drop the framerate very often.

Note that you will not see this on emulators since SSF runs everything without slowdown.

No they are not.

Slowdown means that the action of the game slows down. Everything moves at a slower pace, but still smoothly.

Framerate drop means that the game stays at the same speed, but runs at a lower framerate, making everything all choppy.

Both are techniques used when the graphics chip cannot draw things fast enough.

Layer Section 2 definitely drops the framerate and gets all choppy. I think it also slows down when you do a super attack. I'd have to check that latter - but I remember clearly that the framerate was not constant in the game.

The cart slot doesn't get loose (at least it never did for me), but it can get dirty very easily, which is what causes all the bad cart problems. All the carts gather a lot of dirt, which get in the cart slot. Cleaning the cart contacts, then using them to scrub the cart connector itself should help a lot against this.

Other common problems include the laser needing recalibration (complicated). Most of the time when your Saturn can't read discs, or doesn't spin up the disc, it is because the laser can't see shit anymore and needs recalibration. Buying a new laser will not help a lot since you need to calibrate that one as well, it's not just a matter of popping in a new part.

Also, some power supplies have unreliable components. The TOP PWM chips in particular are known to be awful, but they can be replaced with modern equivalents which are more reliable.

They are not semantics. One of them has the actual gameplay slowing down (ie. all movement on the screen is slower), the other has everything still running at the same speed but with the game skipping every other frame. It's a completely different thing.

This is an urban legend. I've owned the 1mb cart and the game run slow as molasses even with that, That's the reason why I decided to sell that version (I had two copies).

It only runs without slowdown if you play it on a Saturn emulator. On the real console it has shitload of slowdown regardless of RAM cart.

Well, it might have even worse slowdown with the 4mb cart, but honestly it is already nearly unplayable with the 1mb cart. Very poor port.

Jam is actually an amazing port. The games aren't emulated and the options for changing difficulty, time, ect is pretty neat. That said, they are still the same old games. The Sonic World option is really cute, but only about 30-60 minutes worth of past time with the 10 or so missions.

It is a really cool insight into how 3D Sonic could have turned out, and to be honest, I like it a lot better than how Adventure moves and feels.

Sonic 3D on the other hand isn't really that interesting. It is still the same 3D Blast everyone is kinda indifferent about from Telltales. But the Special Stages could make it worth while alone. Sonic Team made new special stages for it. They build on the Sonic World feature from Jam, and again are a pretty amazing insight into what 3D Sonic could have been like, even if they are classic halfpipe style levels.

Sonic R you can honestly pass on. It is slippery garbage.

I am starting to think the quality this Saturn thread is rather questionable, considering the growing amount of love shown for rather so-so games.

You can like them all you want. Hell I like a lot of really broken games myself. It just fascinates me that people can have favourites such as Sonic R or 3D Blast.

But maybe it fascinates others that my favourite Saturn game is Bulk Slash, I dunno.

>> No.2200960

Bulk Slash is one of my favorite Saturn games, and probably one of the top non-RPG/Sim games on the system period. I don't know if I've ever seen anybody speak ill of it.

Of course I have crazy taste too, it pretty much all skews to "must know Japanese to play" games and I think part of why I like them is because of how coming from the English-speaking world they all feel like "hidden gems" (it also doesn't hurt that 90's 2D RPGs are my favorite type of game regardless of system).

Seriously, a game all about the excitement of exploring having terrible, linear environments where there's basically zero exploration to do. What the fuck were they thinking?

After Lunar, that game was such an incredible let down.

Beyond Oasis (Genesis) and it's sequel Legend of Oasis on Saturn are straight up two of the best action RPGs ever. Think of a mix between Secret of Mana with it's various elemental spirits and Zelda style puzzles. So you go through dungeons and the like, fighting monsters and using your various spirits to light torches, melt blocks of ice in your way etc etc.

They're both really, really great games. Legend of Oasis especially is I think one of the best looking games ever. I love the style and the art so much.

Shining Wisdom is OK if you are in the mood for a zeldalike top-down action adventure game. I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for an RPG, though. I played through it once and enjoyed myself for the most part but ended up selling my copy off. The dash mechanic is annoying, I don't much care for the prerendered sprites and portraits, and Working Designs changed the proper nouns so the connections to other Shining series games get lost in translation.
Blazing Heroes is kind of bland but has its charm. Play it if you've already played all 3 Shining Force 3 scenarios and Dragon Force and you want more SRPGs to play on the Saturn.
MKR is great, but also more like that Zelda genre (4 swords adventure is similar) than an RPG. It is one of the prettiest games on the system. It's really girly, though, so if that bothers you be forewarned.
As far as traditional JRPGs in English I really liked Shining the Holy Ark and Albert Odyssey (although the ending is really unsatisfying). I really wish more Saturn RPGs got translated, but who doesn't.
