I've always had issues getting into Vagrant Story. I usually get to like the Minotaur and end up dying at some point after. This has probably happened half a dozen times (about 3 times on Demo disc as a kid, and 3 in my adult life)

I just don't get how to play it I guess. I want to like the game, but feel like I'm fundamentally missing out on some game mechanics.

Anyone have useful tips or resources? I want a bit of insight before I try again.

Here's a can of worms.

There's two processes people seem to fall into - those that feel you need to have a weapon for every situation and carry 4-8 different ones, and those (like me) who never switch away from a single primary weapon and just fuse the attributes from other weapons into that one weapon.

Those that do the former quickly find out that between 6 different enemy types, 6 different element types, and 3 damage types that none of their weapons are ever 100% effective in any situation. The stat gains those weapons receive are spread across multiple weapons, making their strengths stronger but their weaknesses weaker.

Those that employ the latter will find that their weapon is usually never terrible, but neither will they be doing huge amounts of damage without relying on every other system in the game to offset this (chaining, break arts, buff/debuffing constantly).

I prefer the latter because integrating other weapon attributes to strengthen a primary weapon is further bolstered by the fact that any given weapon adjustment gives you +3 stats for every -1 stat, combined with the variances of enemies you face tends to forge your weapon into an all-around decent damage dealer. The game also isn't very subtle about giving you a spell that buffs your water attack 5 minutes before a fire boss appears, and that you only get better chain arts and break arts as you use them.

And now we can open the floor to people complaining that the process to switch weapons on the fly is far too slow and contend that the game was meant to be played with multiple weapons.

>Animaniacs is all kinds of bad

What the fuck? It's by no means the best game ever or anything, but it's a solid platforming/action game from the golden years of Konami's licensed Warner bros. games.
It uses a similar dash mechanic as seen on Buster Bust's Loose, and also a sort of free movement perspective similar to beat 'em up games, it's a pretty interesting game, has all sort of references to popular movies from Alien to Indiana Jones to Neverending Story, and also good graphics and nice music, as usual with Konami. It's a solid game.
Aladdin for SNES is also a great game, we've been over this at least a hundred times here. Virgin's Aladdin (Genesis/PC) is good, but gameplay and physics is better on the Capcom game. Anyway they're both different games, and both are worth playing. Same as Animaniacs, the Genesis version is a traditional 2D sidescroller as opposed to the SNES one, but it's still good.

Hori makes a good 360 pad, the EX 2 Turbo. It's hard to find though.

The SLS Saturn USB pads are also good, but good luck finding one for anything less than a small fortune.

Wii Classic Pad Pro works nicely for a variety of things, and USB adapters are easy to find online.

good old DualShock2 is also nice if you have alien hands. Also has plenty of adapters for all manner of systems, PC included.

What exactly do you want to play? 3D and 2D both have different ideal choices.

AFAIK, the only thing that emulates SGB properly is an old version of BSNES - I use V70 myself - and I'm pretty sure you can't find that for Android phones, but it should work on a PC. Get BSNESV70, get a SGB ROM - I like to use the Japan-only Super Game Boy 2 one because the new backgrounds are pretty pimpin', but it's a matter of taste - and away you go.

System, Load Special, Load Super Game Boy Cartridge, then give the program the SGB ROM and the GB ROM you want to play.

Also, I think there's a BSNES fork for Libretro (Mercury?) that's planning to reintroduce SGB support - it was removed in later BSNES versions because byuu didn't like the way it worked (kind of a hacky thing with an emulator in an emulator that wasn't quite perfect enough AFAIK), but given that it's apparently the only way to play SGB games properly, it's still worth doing that way.

First, if I mod my PAL SNES to output 60Hz and running a PAL game in this mode, does the music also get faster or does it stay the same?

Second, a Super Gameboy has the innards of an actual one, does that mean that a Super Gameboy outputs at 60Hz when put in an unmodded PAL SNES or is it still capped at 50Hz?

And the last question is about SCART switches.

Is there some way to make a emulator start already playing a rom, like it was a console with some cartridge inserted? My dad don't know how to use a computer properly except using the browser to read news and watch sports, but he really likes to play SNES version of Side Pocket, then I thought about some shortcut in his desktop which already would start the emulator in full screen with this game, as it is the only one he has interest. Yeah, but it seems that's all it does. Basically, it does the borders and the colors, but it lacks all the other technical bits.

So if you try and play Animaniacs, it won't have music because the special SGB music isn't emulated. Or if you try and boot the SNES Space Invaders game packed into the GB version, it won't work. And you can't muck around with palettes and the drawing tool and the different borders and shit like that. I believe that only old BSNES does SGB emulation proper, and if you're anal about that like I am, that's important.

I played II because I liked IV and I liked it. It isn't really like IV though, other than having the same sort of combat. Also I played the GBA version. Which as far as I know just has better graphix and a few additional bosses or whatever.

I don't think that there is a plugin for this. But, you could perhaps change it via CSS. Though, I don't know if that is possible since the Spoiler picture is on the server's side.

It does have such a thing. You learn pretty early on about this from a witch's broom. Push B and Select and there opens a world map but without descriptions, so you still need to find the point you are supposed to go. Dungeons don't have a map, though.

I'm currently doing a Final Fantasy marathon and was wonder: What's the recommended way to play Final Fantasy III?

I'm sure there's a fan translated version of the NES rom, which is what I was considering playing, but I know there are a couple hundred ports of it across the DS, PSP, PC and Android.
If the only difference is 3D graphics i'll probably just stick with the NES version, but I don't want to miss anything if the remakes are better in some way.

Play the fan-translated NES version it's better and doesn't require you bother with friend codes in order to get certain items.

>Ultima 4
>there's a dungeon in the basement of Britannia castle
>if you use the Exit spell, it takes you to the entrance of Hythloth

Was that intentional? It seems like you're SUPPOSED to get to Hythloth by going all the way to the bottom of the Britannia dungeon, then finding a door that leads to somewhere in Hythloth (Britannia is basically a hub that's connected to other dungeons in the game) but using the Exit spell just warps you straight there.

i already looked at an online manual, but i need to make sure that in order to insert the cartridges correctly, the arrow on the cartridge must on the same side as the arrow on the board itself
pic related its how i think it goes in

My graphics card's a GTX 480 It's got DVI outputs, but I'm not sure which as I'm only now just learning that DVI-I and DVI-D (I think?) are two different things.

I have a small little CRT television that has a few inputs of the red/white/yellow variety (what is that actually called, composite? RCA?) and an s-video input.

I wanna output my emulatin' to that tv for maximum comfiness, but don't wanna get all mixed up buying adapters when they're useless without converters, or converters that don't work with my computer's video out.

This question's probably been asked a million times on this board: what do?

Probably. It's one of the few dungeons that can't be reached by foot or by boat, and it's also where you find the airship

Anybody got this? I'm feeling like sticking with the GBA version with Easy Ring because I like the visuals better than the 'updated' ones of the 25th anniversary hack, but if that game makes some significant improvements to the game balance (as in, not too much grind like original Mother but not way too easy like GBA Mother with Easy Ring) then I may put up with the visuals.

Because he became a part of the Lifestream after the events of Nibelheim. He's technically not even alive in a physical sense, hence why he can be in several places at once, control the clones, teleport, etc. So with the powers of the Lifestream, he is able to accomplish incredible physical feats, such as morphing into the angel. It aligns with his belief that he is a divine being, sent to save the Earth for the Cetra. He also has Jenova's powers, since he was created using her cells.
Not necessarily a good thing, but you have to play the game twice, and during the second playthrough, look at all the tapes in the icicle village and the stuff at Nibelheim Mansion and pay a lot of attention to the dialogues to really grasp the story fully.

Well, /vr/ is a slow board, with the exception of some threads. You have to be patient. Post the question and you'll have an answer in a few days. And it's the best answer that you'll get compared to anywhere else, in my experience.
