If the 64DD had released in the US, do you think Ocarina of Time (and others) would have had an even larger impact on the fifth generation?

>> No.2183617

It would have had the same impact that the Famicom Disk System had. A neat toy for enthusiasts to try to get the most out of their games, but irrelevant for the average consumer.

>> No.2183701

No it would have had an even less impact because fewer people would have bought it,system add ons like that were always doomed for failure because it divides the userbase.

The only successful adoption of an add on was the pc engine CD as the pcengine duo combo was quite popular.

Pretty much every major game on the original system, like it or not, redefined its respective genre. Don't really know how much more impact do you want, guy.

Came in to say this. I hate the N64 because it's like the ultimate Casual console where even a retarded six-year-old knew every single good game and every other game was garbage but it absolutely did define console FPS, 3D platformers and party games.

You sound like a 15 year old.

The DD was a bad idea because it still didn't use CD-ROMs, but propietary format and it was also an add-on. If it was released in the US it would have had the same bad luck or worse than in Japan. There's only a couple games worth for it, and this is literal, I think there's only Mario Artist, Doshin the Giant, Sim City, and the F-Zero Expansion. It definitely is cool to have one if you like the system, and the 3 or 4 games it has are all at least interesting, especially Doshin (which has an also rare version for Gamecube anyway), but commercially it was worse than the Virtual boy.

I don't know what you think I said but you obviously failed at comprehending. Doshin The Giant is a shit game just like 98% of the N64 library. The major games on N64 truly were major and if any of them had been DD exclusives it would have been a monumental blunder, but the rest ofvthe shit may as well go straight in the trash.

If it sounds like a teen's opinion that's because I formed this opinion when I was a teen, fifteen years ago. Castlevania is the one and only N64 game I have come to respect in all that time that I initially trashed.

No. Only because URA Zelda was just a tell-tale all along and never existed beyond Master Quest which was itself a simple remix that no-one bothered to refine to meet standards of Zelda etiquette.

Don't believe me? Go back and actually read the interviews in context and not just quoted blurbs. Miyamoto never once suggests there is some super secret OoT sequel in the works. Just a second quest that they would try to find a way to include as a bonus.

The illusion has been shattered. You can stop chasing the mirage.

ocarina of time would've had much less of an impact, because it would be exclusive to a peripheral, thereby shutting out the majority of the N64 userbase. Peripherals almost never do well and they're a bad idea unless it's simply adding another system's library to a console (such as with the genesis SMS converter or the GC's gameboy player)

Had the N64 used DD from the beginning and not carts, yes it would have made a huge difference. But outside of that, absolutely no. The disks only hold 64 MB, only a small part is rewritable and it would have been an expensive add-on.

Nintendo dropped the ball with the N64, but made the best of what they had with the games.
