Generally I find the opposite to be the case. If he plays one of your favourite games you become much more critical of the editing and Arino's performance.

This is why a lot of people complain about the big name games, because everyone has played them already.

>If he plays one of your favourite games you become much more critical of the editing and Arino's performance.

I really don't understand anyone who gets upset at Arino doing poorly in a game they like, seems like they're missing the entire point of the show which is that he isn't good at video games.

When he struggles with games I know I only find it more entertaining since I can relate a lot better.

Arino's simply worse at faster platformers that don't limit your movement as much. G'nG:s are harder than SMW or DKC2 but the jumps in those games always go the exact same way so you will eventually learn them all through repetition.

>> No.2182418

Hey man, the guys middle aged, he plays these things with like a week or so between each session. He only beat Ghosts and Goblins because he got tons of practice and died a ton on each stage. Arino gets through games via attrition half the time. Him failing on the first stage is actually the most likely thing to happen.

>> No.2182489 [DELETED]

>>2182151
This. You know he played the hell out of SMW as a kid so he has to milk it so they have enough footage. The ending was totally staged too, how he died a gazillion times to Bowser but on his very last life of the day he beats him. It's a miracle they all shout! No, that was very obviously set up that way on purpose. Same for SML too when he's dropping into pits on purpose to extend the episode because it's only a 30 minute game in reality.

His whole gimmick is he's "an old man bad at games" but in reality he's not bad at all, but he still has to play that part because it's a show. Don't forget the first 3-4 seasons he was an employee working at some fictional company who made him play games. Though they dropped that storyline what endured was that component of his character that he was a bad gamer, but real life Arino is not.

It's interesting how many people use sentences like "you know" and "obviously" despite never actually having anything to back it up except more "you know" and "obviously".

But I'm sure you have the SMW script with the ending written beforehand available or somesuch to prove these obvious facts of yours instead of spouting some "YOU'RE ALL BLIND" nonsense. Blow us all away.

he gets no practice. When they announce the game he'll be playing, he's already played it, filming was done a while ago.

He has strengths and weaknesses like everyone else, though more weaknesses as he gets older, but still, he shows he can still work it like beating Ninja Spirit in little over an hour where it took several for the ADs.

>> No.2182761

He meant practice playing the same parts over and over during the episodes, not before. It's also the two Ghouls & Ghosts he beat, not Ghosts & Goblins.

>> No.2182769

>>2182729
No, I mean he gets practice via playing the game. He probably died just as much and as dumbly on Ghosts and Goblins, we just didn't see it. The guy was saying "He Beat Ghosts and Goblins, There's no way he could die to the bullet bill if it wasn't faked." I was saying that he beat the G&G after a huge deal of practice and butting his head up against the wall for hours.

While I see your point, I can beat Super Mario World in under an hour(using warps) without dying once and beat the whole game with all exits to get halloween mode(that's what I call it anyways) in about 5. This isn't me trying to speed-run either, it's just me playing the game.

It's more that I can't see how ANYONE can be stuck on a level for hours in that game. ANYONE. I was excited as shit when he beat the game on his last try, but seeing him play it was very difficult because I have never seen anyone ever struggle so hard with Mario games in my entire life. I was actually surprised with the Battletoads Two-Parter because he actually did moderately well and enjoyed himself despite needing the second day to finish. I expected it to be two days of him just getting to the third level and rage-quitting. Like Castlevania 3.

So you're good at something you've no doubt done for years? You don't say.

Now go and try to do what Arino is good at and has done for years, namely going in front of live audiences and appearing in various television shows and making people laugh. That no doubt comes to him completely naturally but I'm going to hazard a guess that even after some practice your performance would be about comparable to him playing SMW.

Literally hundreds of millions of people can do things with no effort that you and I would absolutely suck at because people have different priorities and strengths. Just chill and enjoy the middle-aged Japanese guy being terrible at video games for your entertainment.

That was not my point at all. You missed my point entirely. I was just explaining why there are people who don't love every episode, particularly episodes with famous games. The only episodes I didn't like were Quiz: The Feudal Lord's Ambition because they hadn't worked out how to make quiz games enjoyable on the show yet, and I wasn't fond of Ocarina of Time just because the crew did pretty much half of the game for him.

I was just saying that it is disheartening seeing someone struggle for hours(or 10-15 min showtime) on something that isn't as hard as the show made it out to be. So imagine being a huge fan of the game, and watching someone(anyone) play it and sucking at literally everything the game threw at them. Especially for someone who grew up playing video games, hence why they have him doing the show to begin with since he at least has basic knowledge. Unless the show is lying to us and he has no background with video games at all, which could also be true.

FYI I didn't have an SNES growing up, was a Sega kid, only got one for myself four years ago. So if by years you mean 3-4 with A CRAPLOAD of other games that also needed my attention. then you are correct.

There's a new segment on the GCCX Channel: Famicom Karuta (Karuta is the game they also played in "To Catch a Catch-Copy")

Basically, Arino, Abe and Fujimoto face off against two random Swedish guys (Dennis and Pontus, they've been in Japan since last April, apparently). Yanai reads the name of an NES game, and they have to guess which Famicom game it is. The prize is undecided, but Abe's request was Swedish porno. Season 1 can be a little hard to get into at first. Season 2 and 3 are when it really starts to get good with longer challenges. You can also try something from the recommended list if you want to jump around. Prince of Persia is probably the earliest one that's both really good and free to watch.

Season 1 is a completely different format where interviews with game devs are the main part.

You can always sprinkle in a Season 1 episode if you feel like it.

There's no "trying" to translate unless you want to provide everyone with a low-quality translation. People who are capable of high-quality translations are rare and especially so if they have to work for free. If someone has both the skills and the willingness to do that, then they're going to probably say so without some guy going "hey someone else than me should do this thing".

The point is we don't even know what episodes they are translating, how far along most of them are, what episodes aren't even being considered for translation at the time.

Kakaricho even said most of the episodes the translators choose are the ones THEY want to work on. I get that it makes it easier and more fun for them, but that means there will be some episodes that will be set on a backburner for over a year at least even if it's one somebody out there might be interested in seeing.

I waited three months for Koshien to be translated because I wanted to watch the series in order until I realized that this is a very slow process. If I waited for the show to be translated in chronological order I'd wager the show will have ended at the rate things are going.

Not complaining, because the people who are working are definitely working very hard. Like the other guy is suggesting, this would just speed it up. If it'll make you happy the "low quality translation" could be sent to SAGX translators for fine-tuning to see how accurate they are. It wouldn't take nearly as much of their time, and we'd get episodes faster.

If I recall correctly, it was some guy who was constantly whining about not using the highest quality raws, since everyone wants 4GB episodes or something. He's the guy who takes SA subtitles and slaps them on his own raws under the name VRisFAGS. From what I understand he attempted to get with the SA team, but they banned him after his non-stop whining got on their nerves.

It was just one guy causing the problems, but everyone else involved just went to join the SA team, so the vr sub team is now dead.

I think you're talking about Kakaricho, he was the translator from the group you mention who tried to join SA but was rejected (not due to whining, but maybe it's just like joining The Onion or something...one doesn't). He still translates for them though.

I think your deduction about the "raws" is flawed also. 4 GB episodes are the actual lossless transmissions as they air on Japanese TV, interlaced MPEG-2. It is true that these could be used to create single-encode episodes for download, whether with soft subs or without, as the subtitle program can interpret AviSynth scripts on the fly. The resulting video files could be of any size and quality, but would necessarily be better than a hardsub from a previously encoded episode...almost regardless of size. In a way, 4 GB raws would allow for higher quality at the same low filesize people want now.

I think the VRiSFAGS guy is willing to help any translation group. LC-GCCX was given a number of subtitles by this individual but chose to stick to his own methods rather than feel pressured to translate. He had been given Mega Man 9 timed scripts and seems to have other things to do than translate. Mega Man X was handled by SA-GCCX at 60fps and decent bitrate so other than the alternative of a softsub or hardsub directly from .TS there's really nothing to complain about. Guy can produce timed scripts and is likely to have offered a Gradius above.

Normally how this works is that you register with ASCAP, a musician's organization sort of like a union that ensures songwriters and performers get paid for sales and broadcasts. This includes stuff like cover songs; you may not know this, but bars or even coffee shops that host cover bands are supposed to pay monthly ASCAP fees which can be several hundred dollars. If they don't, they can face lawsuits or just not have cover bands at all (I have actually heard of this happening).

For recordings, it can be more complicated, depending on who the original songwriters were, record label negotiations and so forth. In some ways it's similar to clearing samples in hip-hop or EDM.

The long and short of it is that as a small/unknown act, you have very little to worry about when you cover a song, especially an international song. I don't think you'd be able to put it up on iTunes or other streaming services, though. Fuji (parent company of Game Center CX, and presumable owners of "Last Continue") are literally the biggest media conglomerate in Japan. There are whole departments in these companies doing nothing but IP protection, making sure proper credits and licensing are in place, ensuring you get paid your 0.02 cents when your song gets played on Pandora.

tl;dr, do whatever you want, don't expect to make any money.

I'm not going to try and argue with a person talking about their day job, but JASRAC is a goddamned copyright demon. I remember a while back they sued a bar owner out of business for playing Beatles music on his harmonica, arguing his covers were the reason customers came at all (despite testimony from customers saying otherwise.)

Personally, I'd recommend making the cover a free promo for the rest of the album (avoiding covers of Japanese music as much as possible). Like >>2255778 said, throw it on Youtube, tweet it to Arino and the staff (Arino, Kan, Abe, Nakayama at least, I'll post links to their account if you'd like), and they'll likely enjoy it. If it gets taken down, you'll at least learn how far JASRAC goes.

>>2255757

The song first premiered on the 24 hour Lemmings live challenge, so any other version would be the clips they played (to Arino's dismay) on regular episodes for months afterward.
