Hey /vr/, I've never played any Megaman games before. Which ones are the essentials?

>> No.2179358

Mega Man 2 and X.

Care to elaborate m8? What elevates those above the others?

All NES Mega Man games are above average platformers, but people like to argue over them. Most popular is Mega Man 2 and 4 because they are easy. My favorite is Mega Man 1.

Stay away from all the other Mega Man games though. X took the challenge away from Mega Man, you cannot fall down holes and die anymore. There is always the opportunity to climb up a wall while falling, and all the bosses are easy as piss because all of their puzzles are just "climb the wall so no boss can hit you". This is the same shit in every single X entry. Zero is alright, not /vr/ but is even more shitty level design wise than X.

>> No.2179367

Start with 2, but play all the NES games at least. Go back to 1 at anytime. It's a great game, but 2 in general is just a much better way to start off.

Also X 1-6 and Legends are typically on the list of /vr/ games you want to play to some degree.

Alright cool, thanks. I'll start with 2.

OP play all of them in order. All of them are must plays in my opinion but not all of them are equally same.

I'm currently playing 8 and X4. It has been a hell of a ride.

Lifelong fan here, the ones that I always go back to for replays are MM3, MM6 and MMX

>> No.2179431

>>2179361
It was a running joke that Capcom was remaking the same game over and over even when these things were fresh. MM2 is, by miles, the best-remembered of them, for whatever reason (probably just for hitting the winning formula first), but picking any one at random will give you pretty much the same experience. 1 is somewhat less polished and generally considered harder.

I'm not really a "fan" of the Mega Man series, but I have played several of the X games and the original Mega Man.

By far, I've enjoyed X1 the most. This game blows my fucking mind.

>> No.2179968

Mega Man 1-7 and 9-10 (replace 1 with Powered Up, the remake of 1, if you want). 8 and Mega Man & Bass are a little questionable. I'd say they're worth playing. Mega Man V on the Game Boy is a must.
Mega Man X1-X5 are all good. Definitely play the the remake of X1, Maverick Hunter X, if you can, because it's fantastic. Play X6 if you LOVED X4 and X5 and thought "Man, these games are great, but I really wish they were full of bullshit." Xtreme 2 on the GBC is also awesome, unless you like playing as Zero.
Mega Man Zero 1-4 (that is to say, all of them) are good. The ZX games (ZX and ZX Advent) are both great.
Both Legends games are fantastic, but playing them will leave you with a feeling of emptiness that will probably stay with you for the rest of your life.
I was never fond of the Battle Network and Star Force games, but that's personal preference.

>> No.2180271

You are making it too complicated

OP:
play 2-6
then 1

>> No.2180293

I played 1-3 in order and a very good break between them because Mega Man games are pretty much more of the same.

3 is pretty hard, but the wily stages are piss easy

>> No.2181737

I'd say start with the Classic series. 2-4 + 9 should be a good set of bare essentials. All of the main series games are worth checking out regardless, just in some differing level of theme and scope. The Game Boy ones (barring 2) are great too. Mega Man & Bass is hit or miss for people, and HARD.

For the X series: Bare essentials are 1, 2, & 4. It's mostly a decent spin on the series with X6 faltering and X7 being bad. The RPG Command Mission ain't too bad if you want a go, and that's majority of the X franchise.

For Legends play the first. If you like it, play 2. Want more? Play Misadventures of Tron Bonne. It's way different, but nifty.

Need someone else to talk about the other spinoffs.

>> No.2181747

Best to play NES originals. Barring that, try the Complete Works versions off of PSN. Anniversary Collection is based on the Complete Works, but has a few issues added.

>> No.2181749

Why are the NES originals preferable over the 16-bit remakes?

>> No.2181757

>>2181749

Wily Wars feels off, especially if playing the PAL version. Powered Up is good, but not quite vindicative of the series. Complete Works are ports made from the ground up and lack any flickering or slowdown, and come with extras with Japanese text. The only minor stickler for CW is possible audio levels.

Ignore everything in this post from "mega man 1" on.

X is fucking outstanding. MM1 isn't bad, but it's definitely the worst on NES. 2 is where they got the formula down. 7 and 8 aren't really my cup of tea, but they aren't terrible. 9 and 10, while not technically retro, follow in the gameplay style of 2, with some new innovations.

The Legends games are pretty good too. Hell, even The Power Fighters is really fun. Have fun, anon.

holy shit this is correct.

MM2 is where it's at. It is the best one. All downhill from there, especially 5 and up.

And then X is the perfect reboot. Downhill from that one again.

MM2 and X are the two you should play. Everything else is just trying to get back to their greatness.

>> No.2182468

X4 is great if you want Megaman turned into more of a melee platformer (Zero). Just don't play as X or else it'll be a subpar MMX experience.

2 is good but overrated.
3,4,6, 9, and 10 are the best.

This has always been my issue with the franchise and anything associated with it. There's always one part of the game design that feels flawed.

I've played MM, MMX, MMZ, and imitators like Gunvolt and Shovel Knight and they all have this problem. MM is the least of these, but it's either "great controls, level design and music? Shit bosses.", "great bosses and controls? Shit level design and music.", "great level design and music? Shit bosses and controls."

NES
1 is the worst one on NES. It has its moments but is a fairly buggy mess.

2 is where Mega Man started to get good. People like this one because it is easy mode. Extremely OP weapons and 1 hit kill robot masters.

3 is the best Mega Man entry on the NES

4 is also easy mode. See Toad Man.

5 is harder than 2 and 4. Overall a fairly balanced game but by this point it isn't as memorable as the previous entries. Some of the post robot master stages can be challenging.

6 is alright, they played with the idea of special types of armor for Mega Man. The armors can be fun to play around with. I always wondered if they drew inspiration for the armors in the later X games from this.

SNES

7 I could never get into this game. Mega Man feels massive on the screen.

X really damn good. dash jumping makes you feel like you are a super fighting robot.

X2 fun but I didn't like it as much as X. They introduce special bosses that jump from stage to stage. I never liked the mechanic.

X3 I've only played once so I don't have much to say about it.

Playstation

8 I liked this one a lot more than 7 but not as much as the NES games. The animated sections were cool and the voice acting is hilarious (Dr.Wahwee tier). Worth checking out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmMispgpUs0

X4 playing as Zero was fun. I think there was a storyline or something?

X5 see X4

X6 Not as fun as X4 or X5.

Playstation 2

X7 never played it but I've heard that it's shit.

X8 See X7

Wii

9 I had fun with 9. It felt easy with the exception of a few surprise death moments that were extremely easy to avoid once you paid the 1 life toll of passing that area.

10 never played it.

Play Megaman 2-6

After that play 1 to see how it all begun, and 9 which is one of the best Mega Man games, but a "fake retro" game from a few years ago that was released online for Wii and some other consoles.
7 and 8 are the only mainline Mega Man game that don't look like NES games, they are not shit but not great either , 8 has better gameplay than 7 but it also has cringy voice acting. 10 is also a new game from 2010 iirc that looks like a NES game, but it isnt as good as 9.
9 and 10 were made by Inti Creates, not Capcom, who also made the gba Mega Man Zero games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inti_Creates

>>2184178
Mega Man games are not hard, their difficulty is kinda like the NES average, not easy, not impossibly hard, they are very beatable.
As a kid without internet and without magazines most of the challenge was finding out which robot master could be beaten easily with the mega buster, and then trial and error to see which robot master was weak to the weapon of the last robot master you had beaten.

This. Some aren't as good as 2 or 3, but none of them are outright bad. Perhaps the original is the worst, comparatively speaking; absolutely speaking, it's a flawed game, but still a slightly above average one. The rest are far above average, if not absolute classics like 2 and 3.
