Mortal Kombat. Even today it's a big draw for a lot of people. But back in 1992 when a lot of games, especially arcades, involved no more story than "go save a princess", to have all these characters with bios, a full history with motives, their endings, all of which was expanded for MK2, plus the associated comic books, that was mind blowing. For me it was the first exposure to any game that had a real story, so I was really taken with it. It's more involved than a lot of RPGs even.

Is Deus Ex considered /vr/? It had a ton of books and all that scattered everywhere if you really felt like delving into the story really heavily.

This fucking game. Between the people who got a few floors up and decided that whatever they found was the Paradise they were looking for to the infamous room full of dead kids near the top, this game--in four shades of green--had a kind of world building that most games of the era didn't even attempt in the first place.

agreed, it was a pretty badass idea for a multi-dimensional tower. not to mention killing a bunch of hindu spirits and finally the option of killing "god" with a chainsaw. still my favortie from the SaGa series.

It had good voice acting and atmosphere, but the actual story was a clusterfuck of retcons and re-writes.

If you want to go with just Blood Omen, then yeah.

This is the only video game I know of where the fanbase actually formed into an organized group to celebrate it. I know stuff like Star Trek and Star Wars has their own gatherings, but they are so small scale compared to what the Bible Adventure guys put together. They go to their cons every Sunday, it's crazy how fanatical they get over this game.

I fell like the focus of the fandom has really moved beyond the game itself and sort of become all about the ritual and secondary works, kind of like Tohou or Ponies. Even my parents are in on that shit, they go to the cons every week but I don't think they've ever played the game even once.

Myth had tons of back story but most of it was kept vague yet intriguing. A lot of it is because we experience the campaign from the point of view of a rank & file soldier. Also each unit has a bit of lore text displayed when you click on it.

Wow, you're unbelievably ignorant! Stronghold:crusades/catechumen/whatever else is in that series has like a billion fans, and some of them go to its gatherings 5 days a week, and they're not just casual gatherings, they actually act all serious and assume it's all to educate you! Some people even go to its conventions every day of the week, at least in places like worst korea.

Also, there's video games of which the fans routinely kill themselves! But the numbers of those fans getting killed get even bigger, and by a whole lot more, when you count things like camps of fans of rival games being likely to brrrrrrt them.

VAE VICTIS

Basically, the world that the game takes place on is a post-apocalyptic Earth with all humans pretty much completely wiped out and the basis of humanity reset into dog and cat people. What's below all the sky islands is actually what's left of Earth.

None of this is actually explored in the game but largely in its pseudo-sequel Solatorobo and assorted Japanese supplemental material which goes into detail about the lore to an absurd level.

https://web.archive.org/web/20000816071550/http://www.atlus.com/tailstor.htm
It's possible that this was all new info specifically made for the sequel, but this actually refers to Prairie as "the revived Earth" all the way back from when the game was new, so it can be assumed it had been something they were working on even as far back as 1998.
