/vr/ port comparison thread.

Left is Ms. Pac Man in arcade form, right is the VCS port. It looks just as shitty as the first Pac Man port at first glance, but it turned out a lot better. Ghosting is reduced, the sound effects and cutscenes are intact, and the maze is better designed. It shows what can be done with 8KB vs 4.

For those who don't know, Atari Donkey Kong looks like shit on purpose. Coleco got the rights to all Donkey Kong releases on consoles, so in making the ports tehy gave extra love and attention to the ColecoVision version and made the 2600 version look bad.

This same deal is also the reason that Atari didn't end up manufacturing and distributing the NES in the US. They were so pissed over Coleco getting the Donkey Kong rights that they immediately refused any further business dealings with Nintendo, something which may also explain why Atari didn't put any games on NES themselves but instead created Tengen to do it.

You are so wrong, it's not just about characters on screen (which 5 is a pretty decent amount since Sega CD and X68000 have 4 and they are still amazing ports).

The big problem is (as i said), that the GBA port is an improved SNES port, which was already inaccurate and flawed in many ways to begin with: the graphics are different to the arcade with (redrawn) worse looking and less detailed backgrounds, the sprites are different too, with worse detail than the arcade and a ugly dark color selection (For example, Two. P is just a pallete swap of J), the animations are severely cut too compared to the arcade, they did NOTHING to fix this on the GBA version, yet they added stupid little extras.

Lastly, the biggest flaw of the SNES version that wasn't fixed in the GBA port: it's not the same game as the arcade, the level design is completely different, the characters AI/attacks act differently too compared to the Arcade, that's why you are playing the SNES version and not an actual Arcade port.

On the surface, the SNES version looks the best, but it's actually the worst, wonky hit detection, fewer music (it doesn't even have a boss music) and the graphics have less variety (for example in stage 2 and 3 in Genesis and NES versions, the backgrounds change colors between each "act", on SNES port it's the same all the time). Also in few words, the SNES port is plagued with bugs.

That's because it's a pretty good port, the animations are arcade perfect unlike the cut animations on the SNES version, and the voices are faithful to the original too unlike the generic baseball voices on the SNES version.
