2174384 No.2174384 [Reply] [Original]

So as by my little sister's request I've been showing her some 'old video games' to peak her interest. So far it's led to her having some fun and I wanted to keep it going, however, I'm drawing blanks on what might be fun for her to play. So far she's sat through generation 1, 2, and 6 of Pokemon and seems to really enjoy one of her new games Doodle Jump or something? I think she'd really like to try out another RPG or Platformer. I was thinking of introducing her to the Mother series since they seem lighthearted, however, I've never played them before so I'd have to hear from others' word of mouth. With that said does /vr/ have any suggestions they think my sister should play? We can emulate anything the Wii can.

Also I'll take non-vr suggestions as well for her but please spoiler them since they're not on topic.

Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past are pretty easy choices.
The girls in my family were big fans of Mario Kart 64, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon and Battletoads if you can believe it.

Puzzle games are good option too. Panel De Pon, Bubble Bobble, and Poyo Poyo are full of cute shit. Ico and Oddworld might be good choices as well.

Mother (Earthbound in particular) can be an alright entry game for the RPG genre with its simplistic gameplay, but she will probably not get the appeal of the "90's kid" atmosphere, also 3 is anything but lighthearted, they went full tearjerker Adventures of Coldsteel "Edgemaster" Hedgeheg with that one and the original Mother is too archaic. Good cutesy entry-level JRPGs would be also Super Mario RPG or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

Super Mario Land 2, Kirby and Yoshi's Island are all good lighthearted platformers that aren't too challenging.

Duke Nukem 3D, Crazy Taxi, Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island, Banjo-Kazooie, NiGHTS, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

These are games which from my experience are good for establishing a person's expectations regarding earlier era stuff without being too early to be easily appreciated.

I'd call it human rape (by aliens)

Battletoads? haha, I'll have to give that one a shot when she's a little bit older. She's only six right now so I rather keep things simple. Puzzle games sound fun though. CT and LTTP are also good suggestions.

>>2174393
I could try FFMQ. I tried setting her up with FF4 and she died in the desert area around Kapio. She hadn't saved either and she was bummed out about it. MQ might be a lot easier. SMRPG is pretty forgiving too now that you mention it.

>>2174394
My only fear is introducing games with too mature content. I'm sure she knows all the 'bad words' in Duke Nukem, but, I rather not encourage her sprouting them all over school. The others are okay though, I'll try to set those up for her.

>>2174549
MWIV is one of my favorite games so I've thought about it, I just don't want to give her something that's too difficult. Not that MWIV is super hard or anything, but, it has some challenging moments.

I love Kirby, I don't know why I hadn't thought of this. Thanks Anon.

And the copious amounts of cursing Duke does? The large amounts of gore in the game? The fact that Duke pays girls to show their tatas? Duke literally ripping off an alien's head and shitting down its throat? Why would any responsible older brother show that to his sister?

Magical Chase, you can emulate this game easy on the Wii and play it even with a wiimote only[i think its possible, i don't remember that well] and your sister will love it, but tell her to start with the first difficulty level, this game is hard as balls on bumpy

Cute Em Ups are the best, I just bought one off of steam and I'm hoping to enjoy it. I'm sure if she doesn't like to play it she'll at least enjoy watching me trying to get good at Magical Chase.

>>2174962
Sunset Riders and Metal Slug are some of my favorite games ever. I'll try introducing her to them slowly and see what she thinks.

>>2174975
I was going to make a post about how I think she isn't old enough to really handle that, but, I'd think I'd be hypocritical. I know I was playing Duke 3D, Doom, Blood, and even things like Harvester around her age. I don't know, it's a delicate subject, if it a boy maybe I wouldn't feel so uneasy about it. I don't know I'll think about it. Little Mermaid might be lots of fun though, I've heard that's a good game.

>>2175308
I've never played SF despite being a huge fan of SRPGs and TRPGs. I'll try playing it with her and see if she gets the hang of it. Usually she gets frustrated if she doesn't get the concepts initially.

>>2175327
>>2175347
Beat em ups could be fun, I've never tried Snow Bros though. I'll go look it up.

Thanks for all the suggestions, please keep them coming if you can think of anything else she might like.

I really enjoyed all the Banjoo,Crash,Donkey Kong, Mario, Spyro, Sonic and Pokemon games (mainly Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2, Snap and Leaf Green) when I was growing up aswell as Mario Kart and Smash Bros. As an adult I'd recommend Kirby games as another anon did aswell as possibly Pikmin. Depending on her age Metroid might also be nice oh and Klonoa.
Goodluck anon you are a very kind brother.

FFT is one of my favorite games ever so it was eventually gonna happen. With help at least she'll be able to figure out how to select other units in combat. Fun story, it took me four years to figure out how to put more than one unit on the field in FFT. I wasn't a very bright kid.

>>2176942
We haven't tried any yet, our parents have it set up that she can only play games on the weekend when I come to visit from what I understand. I don't know why they're suddenly so strict about that kind of stuff since I could play them whenever I wanted. I guess they don't want her coming out like I did.
;-;

>>2176995
Another fun platformer choice. Even if I don't like the DKC series too much I think she'll get a blast out of them.

>>2177061
Taken as a suggestion, and nah, I'm just trying to make her happy. I live an hour or two away from her and she looks forward to when we play video games together. It's really been our best bonding time. I've been a pretty shitty big brother otherwise, but, I won't go into detail about that.

Also try something a la streets of rage. It may be a bit adult themed but cooperaring with your silbing, using your fists to defend eachother and win is very thrilling. I beat double dragon with my sis when we were younguer and we used to play altered beast with a friend now and then.

>>2182319
Hahaha, she cried at the MLP finale for one of the seasons, hell if I know. I'm sure something in Suikoden would scare her for life. I know I watched War in the Pocket at her age and it scarred me.

>>2182321
How did you know that's exactly what happened!
Nah, I'm just a really shitty son when it comes down to it all. Being gay is just another factor in all of that.

Anyway, I'm going to head over there now. Thank you again everyone, like I said earlier I'll let you know how it went when I come back.

It's a hard game, sure. But it's still one you can mess around with and still have fun.
The first level is more than winnable at her level, at least with a 2nd player helping.

A game that's too hard to beat isn't exactly a bad experience.

All I really care about is if my sister finds it fun to be honest. I want her happy.

>>2184609
I just worry since she has a temper problem like I did. She needs to grow out of it though, and I know we'd be able to play it for a while. I might look into seeing if there's a hack that fixes that glitch in one stage that makes it impossible to play it two player.

Also, update for today. We mostly played soccer and sat around as I helped her play that new Tomodachi Life game she's enthralled with. We spent most of the other half of the day playing the NES Kid Icarus port on the 3DS. She had a lot of fun with it and I even got to show off a little. She wanted to know what game Pit was from so I bought it for her. It was a fun day.though, tomorrow we should be able to play on the Wii more since my mother was taking a test for her job in there and she barely knows how to work a computer as is. Wouldn't want to disturb her while she worked. Anyway, sorry for it not being super /vr/ related, but, I'll talk to you guys tomorrow afternoon.
