I'm looking for non traditional RPG's. Pic is related. Strategy and action preferably. Adventure games of the same mold would make me happy.
Right now I'm stuck in a Final Fantasy Tactics hack. So I need to take a break, but still hungry for that trpg action.

Go play Revenge of Shinobi. It's a surprisingly tactical side-scroller.

In my opinion, everyone should play Arc the Lad Collection.
Most underrated series I've ever played. Expect lots of heart-wenching moments, though. Especially in ATL2.

Came here to say this. Nontraditional for sure, and the battles are somewhat similar to the tactical grid-based mold to boot.

Yeah, Grandia 2 to be exact. I love that fight mechanic where you can counter and reset the enemy turn.

I played that once for a few minutes. I did not understand how to sneak past guards. I'll give it another go.

I honestly can't recommend the PS2 games, they are just bad.
Arc the Lad Collection is Arc the Lad I, II and III on a single package. They are all PS1 games.

People rarely mention Arc the Lad when it's an excellent RPG. Main character is surprisingly competent, smart, acts like a real leader, and even complains about the bullshit NPCs do being vague about plot-related hints (I.E "You will discover it for yourself--" shenanigans)

In that case, also play the Super Robot Wars games. Some are fan-translated, the OG ones are officially done (but not retro). /m/ has a general with a pastebin of translated games.

None are WD jobs, but are full of robots.

Yes, the first Arc the Lad is very archaic.
But hey, it's only a 10 hour game, a prologue to the much better Arc the Lad II, so it's easy to get it over with.
I also had a hard time getting into the series, but I'm glad I played them.

Not OP, but since we're talking about unconventional old rpg, do you guys remember the name of that cute-looking rpg which was released on Steam not too long ago? It's not in 3D and it looks a lot like FF V or VI, then I guess it must be a bit old. But I can't recall the fight scenes and the background very well because I watched a video of it on youtube 5 or 6 months ago. Its name probably starts with "tales of..." but I may be wrong...

The only one I've played is the demo for Rollers of the Realm, which is newer.

Pinball with special abilities. It's pretty fun, but can be really stupid.

>> No.2174079

>>2173859
It has a plot that is basically generic NES RPG #5, but it's more or less like Kirby's Pinball Land with the requirement to move the flippers with the up or down button whenever you move farther up the table. You get stronger as you hit enemies, and try not to fall down into the lower tables (and the bottom of the bottom table=death)

It even has an item store between some tables, where you buy stuff like stoppers.

100 World Story and Sugoro Quest are worth looking at, if only for novelty's sake. They both take board games and mix them with JRPG.

100WS is sort of like Mario Party and is fun with bros, Sugoro is heavily based on rolling die to attack and move. Both are comprised of little scenarios that don't take a horribly long time to complete.

I'll go ahead and recommend The 7th Saga for SNES. It's turn-based and not an SRPG, but it breaks the mold in a few big ways.
Firstly, the game starts with you picking one of seven characters on a quest to get the seven mcguffins. This isn't terribly notable in itself, but you encounter the other six characters throughout the game, who will join you, tell you to fuck off or straightup attack you, depending on who it is/you are.
Secondly, this is about the only JRPG I've seen where the Defend option actually does anything. Defending on the turn before you attack makes your attack do a shit ton more damage, which adds a bit more strategy to battles.
Thirdly, you've got a radar--sorry, 'Crystal Globe'--on the overworld and in dungeons, and monsters will actually make their way to you, which is good for grinding.
Unfortunately, the game is rather difficult and grindy; apparently the Japanese release was criticized for being too easy, so the devs just reduced the EXP percentage gained from battles and called it a day. But the left trigger and select buttons function as A and B, so you can happily grind while fapping or whatever you want to do. I had a merry time getting trashed drunk while playing when I got my copy the other day.
The game also features some sweet Mode 7 action, and the artstyle ain't bad either. It's pretty cheap as well.

>>2176121
Oh yes, and while it is somewhat difficult, you aren't going to be throwing your controller at the screen in frustration. When you die, it 'Pokemon's you back to the last inn you saved at rather than give you a game over screen.

This seems interesting and I agree with the art style, it looks nice. Although I do put gameplay at the top of my priorities when looking out for a game I never played, I highly consider important as well, the way the game presents itself (graphically).

This one surely gave that 'click' of calling my interest, in a similar way Demon's Crest artwork did to me some time ago.

Not the OP, but thanks for presenting this.

The only other one I know of that has interesting defend mechanics is Legend of Dragoon. It's almost OP though: defending reduses damage, heals a little HP, and defends from all stat effects.

Also, 7th Saga has a pseudo-sequel in Mystic Ark. Not the same thing and Japan only though (has a fan translation).

The "big altering thing" that they normally brag about was putting all three in one package.
