What was the point? Why didn't SNK just make Game Boy games, or make a luxury handheld comparable to the Neo Geo?

>> No.2169374

Because a microswitched control stick is sexy as fuck.

Incidentally is there any backlight mod available for the NGP/NGPC?

Retro or not, the answers are the same.

The point was portable fighting games that played just as well as their arcade counterparts. They succeeded.

>> No.2169794

>>2169746

The DS was cheaper than the PSP and had a touchscreen. The PSP was a generation ahead, had an analog stick and could play music and videos. One could do things that the other could not. The Game Gear, Game Boy, Lynx and even the Game.com were radically different devices.

The NGPC wasn't like the PSP or Game Gear or Lynx. It was more like the Supervision, if the Supervision was only 5% cheaper than the Game Boy. Whatever SNK saved by not paying Sega/Nintendo/Tiger money was lost by its tiny install base.

I like the games on it, but if the 32X was a failure, so was this.

They wanted to break Nintendo's monopoly of the handheld market. Sony (and Sega to some extent) was able to successfully crush their home monopoly, making Nintendo a thing of the past. Then numerous handhelds started cropping up because people saw Nintendo's home market faltering, and they saw this as an opportunity to destroy their handheld monopoly. Today, Pokemon might seem like an insignificant game, but believe me when I say that Pokemon was -the- game that saved Nintendo, at least the handheld market. If Pokemon was made for another console? We certainly don't know but there's a possibility that the console that did get it would've been significantly more popular.

well OP's question is stupid anyway. why NOT make a handheld? it's a great handheld and it's clear that OP has never even picked one up if he's bitching about it.

Seriously OP, actually give the handheld a shot because it's awesome. I feel like most people think it's pointless too until you actually get one and play the games on it (NOT emulated). That microswitch thumbstick is seriously so god tier.

The probably thought they had enough IPs to carry it. They kind of did, but I guess they didn't see that bankruptcy coming, haha.

They shoud've shilled the hell out of it in LatAm. The systems were cheap plus KoF and Super Sidekicks /NeoGeo Cup were fucking huge back then.

>or make a luxury handheld comparable to the Neo Geo?

You retard. That's what EVERY COMPETITOR tried before them. Gamegear, Lynx, TurboXpress.

They failed because more power means less battery life and a higher price. Gameboy won because the games were great, the battery life was good, it could actually fit in your pocket and was durable as fuck. That's the formula for a successful handheld.

SNK knew this better than you. They only failed because of Pokemon.

You obviously never played one of these things. Not being a dick, it's just that simple. Try any of the fighting games (on an actual NGPC, with the clicky stick) and you'll immediately see why NGPC existed. It's that good.

This is not a very accurate analogy. The NGP/C can move sprites much faster than the GBC. GBC could sometimes handle more color depth but chugged along by comparison.

Faselei is pretty damn proper as it is. I get what you're saying though. I imported it from the UK when it came out and it's still one of my fondest gaming memories. It's insane that nobody has tried to make a follow-up or knockoff.
