>Am I the only one who thinks that Mario games are totally overrated?

I mean, except for nostalgic feelings which I appreciate and fully understand, off course, browsing /vr/. These games are not the worst at all, yet they weren't really the greatest on any platform of any generation. Let alone for the SNES, there come 50 games into my mind which are better than Mario. Not even the best Jump'n'Run.

As a RPG-fan, I'd say Super Mario RPG was total nonsense: puzzles were ridiculous, stupifying mini games and no charm but 'its mario and friends...yay'. How does that plainest of all RPGs keeps coming up in all 'good RPG' discussions. Are people just retarded or don't they know how a good RPG looks like?

I just want to know, what is so great about Mario?

>characters seem to be designed awkwardly in both appearance and characteristics

Two reasons:
1) We're the most mature board on 4chan, so a lot of us seem to feel the need to call out immaturity as some sort of "pruning"

2) We seem to be the friendliest and most brotherly due to our smaller numbers, so we're more quick to defend each other from outside boards.

I myself just hit the report button on every piece of obvious bait and shitposting.

Not all games revolve around puzzles or should revolve around puzzles.

Yes, you run and jump. Because it's a platformer. Do you also complain that Doom involves a lot of shooting?

>if it hadn't been for the popularity (advertising and brainwash) of that brand 'mario' nobody would have ever played any game of the series on non-nostalgic platforms (for me from 16 bit afterwards)
Or maybe Mario remains popular because people liked the games and it became a popular series.

I still like SMB3 and super Mario world, but SMB, SMB2 and Mario 64 are all fucking over rated trash.

Mario 1 was good at the time, but the controls are just "meh", on top of a lot of design limitations (no diagonal scrolling, back tracking or world map as a few examples). Its just a relic that's fun occasionally for nostalgia's sake alone.

SMB2 was always kind of shit, and I'll admit that it has gotten somewhat less so over time, but it's still shit. There's just no helping it.

Mario 64 was about as innovative as every Tomb Raider Rip off released at the time (OMG! FULL 3D!!! WE SO GREAT! IT'S AMAZAZINGERU!!!) The problem being that it tries to be a platformer, but the controls weren't precise enough for that, so it was a "fetch quest" adventure game instead. And what platforming segments there are just suck ass because of said controls.
Crash Bandicoot and even things like Tomb Raider did everything Mario 64 was shooting for better, because they were specialized and had actual time and thought put into their development. The ONLY reason Mario 64 has remained popular till now is because Mario Sunshine sucked ass, the DS version of 64 was actually decent and morons STILL riding Nintendo's cawk over the 90's console wars. If none of that happened, Mario 64 would be seen as the rusty, shitty relic that it is.

>> No.2169646

>>2169159
eh. mario games will always be the greatest platformer series ever m80. nothing else comes close. you may have one or two games from another game series that is decent, but none of them have anywhere near mario's consistency of greatness.

mario is the GOAT, and all the off-shoots (smash bros, kart, etc) are all mad fun as well.

Okay, biting the bait here.

I respect your opinion, but I'd like to hear more about it.

What elements of design do you consider awkward? I feel they tie together pretty well. Part of it comes from hardware limitations (difficulty drawing hair led to cap, difficulty drawing mouth led to mustache, and difficulty telling limbs apart from torso led to overalls), but they made use of them well. Early Mario has a pretty simple, appealing design, with bright primary colors, lots of circles, and not too much clutter, while staying pretty distinctive. Granted, some of the derivative characters have unimaginative designs (looking at Waluigi), but I wouldn't call them awkward; they tie in together well.

What do you mean by awkward characteristics? Peach and Waluigi have pretty throwaway personalities, but the others are good enough. Mario's cheerful, flexible, and easy to project oneself onto; Luigi's a loveable coward who has moments of bravery; their brotherhood alternates between envy, rivalry, admiration and close friendship; Bowser's mean, but he's honorable, boisterous, and fun to watch; Yoshi's cheerful and loyal like a pet; Wario's a greedy, lazy jerk who isn't above doing nice things if it benefits him. You have traditional hero, sidekick, pet, damsel, villain, anti-hero roles there. Complex? No. Awkward? I don't see how.

And aren't there a thousand movies and stories about inter-class friendships? The working class and royalty sharing unlikely, friendly bonds? Though it's inventive to interpret "Toadstool" as "toad's stool sample" rather than "Type of mushroom".

Nope, no brains needed. You'll need a bit of skill and creativity to find hidden levels and shit, but the game is designed to be linear. It was supposed to be a more actiony counterpart to Zelda when it was first launched.

speak... talk...grind... buy item... lol XDXD RPGs are kewl.

Though I agree that Super Mario RPG is overrated. I'm a Paper Mario fan. It has great writing and atmosphere.

>> No.2169810

Except for labelling my post as a bait or interpretting more in my post as I said, just answer my question: what is so great about the mario series; what does mario have that other games of the genre in question don't? are these games really so good in comparison as most people praise them?

It's a top 3 series/game in terms of popularity and not top 3 in terms of quality, ergo it's overrated. There, gold star, faggot.

The question for anyone not shitposting wouldn't be whether or not it's overrated (especially as a whole, since it's a huge mess of different genres) but what specific games are overrated, why, and what specific points do they have against them that other games have since improved or had previously bested them at. And rather than a blanket statement about 3d platformers being shit (and they usually are, but then everyone knows that), you were given a chance to provide actual examples and engage in a conversation that, unlike on /v/, isn't immediately trampled by the immutable force of fanboyism. And yet you haven't.

This part I agree with. I would say Mega Man ruled the NES, DKC was king of the SNES, and Banjo was best for the N64. That's not even bringing up Crash and Sonic, which also had way more charm and personality. The only Mario game that really keeps me coming back is Land 2.

Although Mario games sometimes add new elements to the gameplay, they are ultimately simple run-and-jump romps (talking about mainline titles, not spinoffs of a different genre, of course). The games typically utilize the simple setup by offering increasingly complicated stages to navigate and challenges to meet. The fun and the appeal is that although you're ultimately limited in what you can do and what can happen, those limitations are increasingly pushed to their limits.

Mario games are sort of a "bare minimum" of what makes a great game-Or rather, a solidly designed one.
The game is easy to get into, but doesn't baby you as the levels progress. There are optional secret routes like in SMW, where more experienced players can go if they want a challenge. Usually these paths are unlocked by using a Power-up in an unorthodox way.

Throughout Mario's evolution, 2d and 3d, everything feels how it's supposed to. Mario 64 plays a lot smoother than 3d platformers before it, and set an example for the genre. Super Mario Bros for NES was also one of the most streamlined games at the time, especially compared to games like Pac-Land. Point is, each Mario title is made sure to be well-designed and feel good to play, while also being very simple.

That's why kids and (some) adults like Mario, it's a family game accessible to most people..

From 64 onward I'll agree, but in the 2D era they all looked great.
Bowser's face wasn't as lumpy, and he looked more like a turtle
Mario, Luigi, and Peach were shorter, they looked much cuter
Rare's DK design is complete fucking shit compared to EAD's used in DK '94 and G&WG

And Yoshi, man. Fucking Yoshi was great before his own series fucked him to death and never stopped.
Yoshi was great in Super Mario World. His big huggable design, his laid-back attitude, his simple friendly intelligence, his neat dinosaur sounds as his primary voice, his ability to own a house and speak English.

Then Yoshi's Island came out and ruined him up a bit. He's cutesy now, was made dramatically smaller, he's got creepy human arms frog hands, he's not intelligent, his island is re-imagined by a little kid, and his "egg" thing was brought back in a really strange and gross way. He's more of a pet now than a friend.

Yoshi's Story came out and took that a bit further. He's even cutesier, his island is even more dumbed down, his proportions are more fucked, his chin/skull are totally gone, just an ugly ball nose and big creepy eyes. And that fucking horrible voice. This would be for forgibable, since they're babies in that game, but all that shit stuck to adult Yoshi.

From a laid-back sentient dino friend steed to an ugly little babbling baby froggy animal who shits 500 eggs a day. I've never seen a video game character raped harder than Yoshi. Not even Sonic, Bomber Man, or Pac-Man.

I think that's just a side-effect of everything going fully three dimensional. Having those proportions on a 3D model would probably look weird.

And, speaking on an individual basis, the decision to make Luigi taller was a good one and his character really improved with post-64 titles like Luigi's Mansion and the Mario & Luigi series. That's just my opinion though.

I mean that Yoshi's Island was more like his property in Super Mario World. He's got a house, he's got a mail box (implying the island is developed enough for a postal system) he's got signs all about. There are bridges and Ladders, switch boxes and stuff, and this all appears to be the work of the Yoshis, since the Koopas have only very recently invaded. In Yoshi's Island, he just lives in a jungle like a dumb wild animal.

But even then he wasn't as lobotomized as he was in Yoshi's Story and beyond
I'd argue that his last good appearance was in Super Mario 64.

>>2172568
It'd be hard to make the squat cute little designs look good with low-poly, low-res hardware of the past. But today? It would work just fine. Just look at the mini forms in 3D World, and the smallness way more exaggerated than the older 2D designs in that.
Not that I'm complaining, the designs look fine as they are, I simply prefer the older ones.

I think you might be reading a little too much into Yoshi society, but one could rationalize that the structures and systems you refer to were developed between the events of YI and SMW (but then, that would be pretending there's canon, rhyme, or reason to Mario stories). Koopas are clearly shown to exist throughout Yoshi's Island in YI, too.

You also claim "he just lives in a jungle like a dumb wild animal." You seem to have missed that Yoshi's (as in more than one) are depicted as social creatures who live and cooperate in large group--as exemplified by every stage ending by one Yoshi passing Mario off to another. There is no individual Yoshi ("he"), there's a huge society of them.

Yeah, a lot like Vampire bats, which are also dumb wild animals. Doesn't change the fact that his character was lobotomized.

You seem confused. There's Yoshi (the one who keeps getting trapped in eggs in SMW, the dude you play as in Spinoffs, on the roof in SM64) and there are the Yoshis (rainbow froggies from YI, YS, and MK8)
And changes made to "the Yoshi's" directly impact Yoshi, obviously, so I don't know why you bring this up.

I brought up the individual because you referred to him as if he was the one you play as in YI. You're right about the species/individual thing, but you were speaking as if YI starred the individual.

You do seem confused about SMW being the same Yoshi trapped again and again in eggs. All Yoshi dialogue refers to him rescuing his friends.

Originally he was smart enough to have a house and know how to speak/write, and now he's not even close to that, is all I'm saying in regards to his intelligence. Him being a cartoon dinosaur is irrelevant, and most the other prominent cartoon animals, like the koopas and such, appear to be as smart if not smarter than Yoshi was initially. You don't often see Mario's home in the games. Does that mean that in those games, Mario's not smart enough to have a house? Or maybe you just don't see it on-screen because it's irrelevant.

>know how to speak/write
I wonder who wrote all those text boxes about how to do Yoshi-specific techniques scattered throughout YI? Must've been the Koopas, wanting their fight with the Yoshis to be sporting.

Of course, Mario never speaks in SMW. I guess they lobotomized him.

Of course, Yoshi is intelligent enough to drive motor vehicles and play sports by the rules, but you're right, he's just a dumb animal. They should've modeled his cart after a mailbox to pacify you.

>Why are you so against discussing silly little things like Mario lore?
Because it's clear the creators never intended to have a narrative that connected one story to the next, and thus inconsistencies aren't really telling. If you want to read too much into them, they're often contradicted by other elements of the "lore," and thus, in your quest to rationalize a paper-thin plot from a basic video game, you're left with even more nonsense than you started with.

I re-played Super Mario 64 recently. It hasn't held up a whole lot, but I remember being nostalgically interested in it for two reasons:

1. The star statue in the garden says "L IS REAL 2041" (and not "Eternal Star", you're wrong) so Luigi is definitely in the game somewhere, hackers just haven't found him yet.

2. The Big Boo's Haunt stage occasionally plays a Boo's laughter. Not their usual laughter when a Boo is on-screen, it's some rare and random event. I've heard this from people and I think it might have happened to me once, so maybe this isn't so crazy.

I'm guessing the ability to understand speech won't count, or else Yoshi's Island itself would qualify. And of course, the Yoshis' demonstrated ability to communicate with each other doesn't count since it's probably just dumb animal grunts.

So off the top of my head, there's Mario 64, Mario RPG, Galaxy 2. Oh, my mistake, he isn't implied to speak--he directly speaks, something more than Mario does. RPG even establishes that Yoshi is bilingual.

Yoshi has undeniably changed physically, and I don't like those changes (I don't like its "new" voice either, but I don't like any Mario character's voice). But I've never been convinced that the Yoshi species were especially intelligent or especially dumb creatures and so I'm not convinced their portrayal has significantly changed one way or the other. So, beyond the physical redesign, I don't mind the "newer Yoshi" because I don't really see a distinction between it and "older Yoshi".
