Doom is a game about Demons and shotguns. Plus Doom 1's shotgun is like your bread and butter weapon, it's something you can come back to at nearly any point of the game and it's valid.

Shotgun is love, shotgun is life.

That being said I want a weapon somewhere else here in the Vroomer's armory that uses shells somewhere... I think one of the energy based weapons here I'm gonna add a leech altfire that gives cells

11 new levels, bloody hell. I thought making a megawad in just a week was crazy, here it's been only a little over a month and we're already at double that time.

In the majority of IWADS/PWADS majority of the fucking time you'll have more shell ammo given to you than any other type of ammo, and when it comes to chaingun ammo the damn thing just eats it up like a fat kid with a box of cookies, same with the cell and rocket ammo as well because you don't get as much as you want, and quite freakly because of this the shotgun/SSG just feels more dull after a long time of having to use it all the time because the other weapons don't have that much ammo just laying around for you at all, but not only does it have that much more going for it a small pick up of 4 fucking shells gives you enough to kill multiple zombies and more than often enough to take out a imp with just one shot, good luck with doing that with picking up a

Is it the up and down motion when you're running? If you're on zdoom/gzdoom/zandronum, you can mess with your viewbob setting in the console. The default's 0.25, see how it feels after lowering it.

Workin on dat chaingun replacement, the altfire's gonna be a little slower once I get further into this, and it's going to have a unique effect on hit due to how many cell-based weapons will be present, said altfire is gonna consume a shell to shoot too.

guess i'm the only still playing actual doomrl here? oh well... finally had some luck with a scavenger build, and killed the spiderbrain, but with a piercing chainsaw because i found an invurnerability orb next to the stairs. that was probably the only reason i won?

ran out of medpacks when i almost got kill at mt erebus even with cerebus boots. tried to play with the lava and a regular shotgun to keep the demons back but couldn't get enough knockback. level 23 had no medpacks at all.

think i should build the cerebus boots more often. they're more useful than tactical boots in lategame where there's lava and barrels everywhere.

Is centered genuinely easier to work with?

Doom's weaponry do have angled sprites in there for the shotguns and fists, there is also lighting for the chaingun.

Not to mention many modern weapon mods have things like reloading and such so angle sprites will still pop in there.

I like angled and centered sprites, all that matters to me is that they look nice and the weapons are satisfying to use.
I don't like the Shadow Warrior shotgun sprite though.

This, this is what matters, angled or centered are both fine (if done well), but you can't really mix them, you must be consistent.

Now, say, you have a mod that's done with centered weapons, you can still have angled frames for reloading and stuff, like in Accessories To Murder, where the gun is brought to the side of the screen to reload, that just gives you a better look at the gun and I think that's a good way of doing it.

i'd extend this principle to rocket launchers as they are equally satisfying, if less practical and "trusty" than shotguns

the connection being they are both front-loaded burst weapons with a nice punchy aesthetic and feeling of power, thus making them player favorites in no time

Muzzleflash could be beefier, it's sawed off (or at least short barreled), so a lot of propellant would blow out and burn in the air, as for the sound, it sounds less like you're shooting a short 12-gauge and more like you're shooting a short .410, like a medium sized pistol or something, doesn't exactly give off the impressive BOOM of a short shotgun.

The gun also looks too static when shooting, it doesn't recoil or anything, if you made the muzzleflashes a bit flashier, made them animate faster (less tics), and made the gun recoil one or two pixels downwards after the flash, it would look way better. Also, it's not a bad sound in itself, I'd quite like it on a fitting weapon, but it doesn't quite convey the loud boom of a sawed off shotgun.

On the ZDoom forum, one lad suggested different attacks depending on your dash movement--forward attack delivers a powerful slice, side dash attack is a multiple-hit wide slash, etc.
Theory: Debuff main sword attacks (not by much, maybe 5 damage or so) but implement a counter of how many hits in a row you land. The more hits you land, the stronger the dash attack as a finisher?


I'm not fond of the idea of people being able to grab souls willy-nilly, especially since as >>2169996 said it would make the AoE attacks disgustingly powerful.

Heehhhh. I'm down with changing Iron Maiden's specials to be more punchy. The basic idea of the specials is to be more AoE compared to the fire's single strikes, but Iron Maiden doesn't really have that problem because its normal attacks are already AoE.

So let's say forward special is explosive punch, in air it becomes an explosive jump kick. Side specials are still the spin kicks, but enemies explode into gibs rather than get decapitated.
What would back special be? Still the same?


If I do a secondary character (IF), one thing I think might be good would be all the more technical things that people ask for.
Combo systems, DMC styles, more complicated weapon mechanics, a Jojo stand, etc. Hae-Lin would be good for instant-action style, but the secondary character would need to balance between choosing what style would be appropriate for an encounter, and then linking combos together?

Hmm. Theoretically I could make it when you hit the fire your dash comes to an instant slowdown, so that way you can control it with little short dashes; people who just want to maneuver can still have the long dash.

Well, keep in mind this is still theorycrafting and isn't guaranteed in any way, but

That would be extremely easy to adapt, with just a little tweaking of the current blocking system. When the blocking projectile is destroyed, it gives an item to the player that can be channeled into either better blocking or more powerful attacks.
I really like the idea of blocking a Cyberdemon's rocket, absorbing its fire, and then putting it all into one devastating gunshot.

I actually think this would only be a straight downgrade across the board

Side special isn't very good as is. It has very very poor damage output.
I think with more range it would still be pretty irrelevant for a couple of reasons.

The first one is that you can not really dash into a group to kill everything. You're pretty much always working along the outer edge of hordes. And if you jump spin slash it seems to cut the damage.
This is why forward special will be the preferred choice even with a damage cut.

Another issue with it is that for any enemy that isn't dead you are now caught on several sides at once in a bit of a disadvantage. Not sure how to address this.

A damage boost to it and a range boost would help but I think forward special will just end up being the preferred choice by it's design.
So how about this:
Turn the forward slash into a piercing shot instead. Instead of a wide wave it could be a narrower wave made to wreck shit in a line.
Yes it's kind of a rip of what Shadow Warrior's Ki strike setup but it did keep the three Ki strikes all relevant to the end.

This would give all specials it's own sort of niche. Right now there's overlap between side and forward.

zdoom features modern shit, like openGL, the ability to read different map formats, the ability to load PWADs without having to perform an IWAD merge for new graphics, scripting language and other things like freelook and jumping...

chocolate-doom is pretty much doom...ported to modern systems with some VERY minor bugfixes and requires IWAD merging for new graphics (-OR- you have to load the pwad using the -merge flag, which emulates deuSF merging...)

zdoom is a modern engine derived from doom that is backwards compatible with doom...

Apparently it has Hexen compatibility, but either I screwed up something, or it's kind of not all there. The starting pistol, which looks like it should use blue mana, doesn't actually use it and instead runs out of ammo. The mage's ice shards are randomly still there, along with dragon bracers. Additionally, I'm getting the floating <!> sprites indicating textures are missing at the end of the first hub. Other than that, it's pretty great, and in Doom, it's super fun.

it's been years so I don't remember exactly when, but there is a level-cap.

the following worked for me: grind as much as possible in the beginning and then run. dont attempt fighting them, the later levels will throw cyberdemons at you. a scout-build with traits beneficial for running, shotgun and that map-sensing-thing got me through; you will constantly be low on ammo, so you need the recharging plasmagun. the last 40lvls were nothing but running.

Doom 2 adds a single new weapon (the Super Shotgun) and a few more enemies (revenants, pain elementals, archviles and mancubi), but overall they're not much different mechanically. It's more difficult than doom 1, though.

TNT and Plutonia are both doom 2 mods for the most part.

Doom 64 is basically doom2 with new sprites and maps (they add a few "new" enemies, but they aren't significant...shit like the invisible imp, etc). It's also a great atmospheric experience...

Most 3rd party mapsets are designed with doom2 in mind, so there's that too.

Doom 1 is nice and comfy, easy enough on mid-difficulty for newfags, and has really nice, pretty level design compared to doom2 (which looks like brutalist archetecture...and not the pretty, super-futuristic kind, but rather the commie-blocs and 90s supermarket kind)

Is there a way of having some of the features of BD or other mods without having othes? They are "coded" by the "creators" going around, picking up other half-finished add-ons, and slapping them haphazardly into the pk3 with only the minimal amount of work to make them function and even then the thing is held together with chewing gum and a prayer.

The thing has been responsible for so many server deaths and crashes on BE. They implemented the autorestart= command specifically because Cyantusk complained so much about his servers crashing "randomly".
My favorite example was how Caleb was capable of intentionally crashing servers just by going in and spamming the fuck out of his napalm alt-fire. It took innumerable amount of versions before they actually fixed this--and even then I'm not actually sure they've fixed it properly now. One of their fucking "fixes" was to put goddamn +CLIENTSIDEONLY on the fucking playerpawn itself.

You can like them because they're "fun", and I'll question to hell and back your definition of fun, but from a technical level they are unforgivably shit.

But it does go through shells pretty quick when relying on it.

Remember that a lot of people use it for plinking on a whim and overkilling weak enemies just because switching weapons would slow them down or leave them vulnerable. So while it's an efficient wep, in practice plenty of players don't use every pellet anywhere near their 100%.

I'd rather use ammo evenly anyway.

I rather dislike when mods overcomplicate enemies. 2 attacks is fine, 3 is pushing it (for normal enemies, and even then). The beauty of Doom is that the enemies are simple and somewhat predictable, is up to level design and other monster placement to play to their strenghts, making them more dangerous.

it's funny because the runner, cubeface, did duke 3d just before he did blood and he really choked the duke run up. it's like the duke run was a warmup for the blood run which he did well on.

you want the gog One Unit Whole Blood. you get Blood, the expansion episode Plasma Pack and the addon Cryptic Passage. I've heard steam is a copy/paste of the gog version, but then I've also heard people say its worse. regardless, at least with gog the game is yours and not subject to steam drm.

I was playing some chocolate doom, and then I suddenly realized that lost souls are predecessors of kleer skellingtons - both behave similarly, both are tough and hard-hitting for such a minor enemies, both are relatively numerous, both have skeletal motives, and both are pain in the ass (minor one in case of souls, major one in case of kleers).

you mean this level. never tried it. looks balls hard. and the cool gutsu's penis sword only appears on nightmare... i never got pass level 2 in nightmare mode. melee builds are good for beating cyberdemon easily, but makes the game harder in early game. malicious blades master trait is OP though. actually the best defensive mastertrait, maybe better than marine's survivalist.

that's the arena staff i think. sounds too useful to sacrifice it. and i usually avoid beating hell arena, so i could avoid arena master. arch-vile type of monsters murder me too often unless i BFG them.

quake 1's music is on a CD and is streamed straight from the CD drive.

put your quake disc in the tray.
if you're using an ISO, you need to set the virtual drive's drive letter to the lowest letter (i.e. if your "real" drive is "d:", reassign it to something higher and assign the virtual to "d:" )(assuming windows...wine on linux, you can cheat...but I'd assume you know how to configure wine and default drives already)

If you're an even filthier pirate and don't even have the ISO, google is your friend...a few people have uploaded quake 1 music ISOs that can be used instead.

That's not even my issue.

I had tried that, then opened a new lay on the image and tried to essentially trace it in my spriting style...the image is just too fucking detailed -- it's beyond my artistic ability and attention span to trace a full 320x200 image (note: I often work one pixel at a time...tracing and "owning" that image could take DAYS...something I'm unwilling to do).

I think I'll just remake the rock part and call it a day...but it's sleep time now, so I'll probably start working on it in 6-8 hours.

The fuckwits that made the addons and play with the addons refused to even update to versions before.30 for YEARS until finally Terminus just bit the bullet and updated the addons for them.

Then they went ahead and didn't credit Terminus at all, despite his doing the entirety of the addons for them, fucked with them more after Terminus helped them so it became broken and buggy again in the name of 'balance' (meaning their favorite character wasn't OP enough) and now won't upgrade the versions again. There's also more addons that Term didn't help bring up to date.

Instead of either abandoning the addons or trying to bring them up to speed, the people playing the addons (most of the playerbase) insist on playing on servers that constantly crash (autorestart was made specifically for them) using versions of Samsara that were outdated 4 versions ago. Rather than putting effort into learning how to mod so they can update the addons they bitch and whine that Terminus or another modder won't either help them with the addons or make them official, despite the fact that this would mean another 2 mods worth of effort at least. The fact that they are belligerent and toxic throughout all of this doesn't help them recruit help.

Since nobody would play the updated .31 version of samsara in multiplayer because muh addons, Terminus decided not to devote more effort to the project in the forseeable future.

The reason that the addons and making the characters an official part of the mod are such an arduous task is because all of the non Doom engine characters in Samsara require unique gross hacks to replicate their actual function in their respective games. Compound this with the fact that most of the addons that use non Doom engine characters simply don't replicate the hard to replicate function, it means that each addon character would require multiple unique gross hacks to be brought up to Samsara standards, which would require months of work and may not even be possible in all cases.
