I have been playing Sega Master System quite a bit through emulation and I think I am ready to take the dive into owning a console and games but what is the best option. I already have a Genesis Model 1 so I do have the option of the Power Base Converter or the Power Base Mini....but the console is so much cheaper at times...but I'd like to have room.

What are the pros and cons of either option? I have little desire to play Sega Cards

With a genuine Master System you get authenticity and built-in Alex Kidd

with the Power Base Converter you don't get Alex Kidd, but you have the ability to use Genesis controllers and it saves a lot of space.

The PBC also works with the Sega CDX, for whatever that's worth.

Skip on a Master System 2, it's only got bare functionality and isn't worth it.

Buy an FM PBC for the ultimate PBC experience.

you can use genesis controllers on the master system anyway, some games do require the specific use of a master system controller. Wonderboy in Monsterland is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

>still have my original master system
When I was like 5 I once didn't fully insert the cartridge, and then powered on. I was greeted by a blue screen with a maze drawn in white, and played a snail trying to navigate the maze while a timer counted down. I don't know if it was programmed into the console itself or what. In any event, the converter on the genesis always seemed to run our master system games just fine.

I prefer the master system PSG for some games like Rastan for sure and wonderboy 3

I think if you hold down and both buttons when powering up, the screen slides across and starts the maze game.

Not all Master Systems of Alex Kidd. There are about a half dozen different games that could be on it.

OP Here

I tracked one down on Craigslist without games but comes with the controller. They are giving it to me for just $30

I thought it was only the model 2s that came with Alex Kid and the original came with Snail Maze.

I wonder why the Master system lasted only 4 years in Japan and South Korea? Unlike in NA and Europe up until 1990, nintendo NEVER had draconian policies there.

Articles from July are talking about it being upcoming, it may not even be released yet. Retro aftermarket is not a business that's in a hurry.

It's strange how in my experience, everyone i knew had a Master system, and not a NES like the rest of the world it seems.

Japanese developers didn't want to spend money to port a game knowing that it won't sell anywhere except Huezil (and even there I'm certain that Chinese pirates did their magic to make games cheaper than Tectoy.) NEC's surprise success with the TurboGrafx-16 only put the nail in the coffin.
