2161850 No.2161850 [Reply] [Original]

I recently snagged a copy of Phantasy Star 2 from a local used media emporium for like $23. This is the first RPG I've played on my Genesis, what am I in for?

An oldschool dungeon crawler that is disguised by its overhead view. Get ready for dungeons that will make you weep. Also, a surprisingly decent story and twilight zone ending.

My advice: don't use online help. You beat this one on your own and you'll get satisfaction you never thought possible from the generally ultra casual RPG genre.

This game and 4 sold me on Phantasy Star. I never even knew about them because no one used to talk about these. Watch out for your battery though. This game is damn old. Make sure to test that it still works before you dive in. It is at least a 30 hour game.

Well, wait till you get to Climatrol. That's the first "real" dungeon in the game.

Also, the posters talking about "grinding" aren't really using it in the proper sense of the word. You grind a couple levels outside of the first town like in any old RPG, then that's it.

I played Phantasy Star II about half a year ago. It's pretty good, I imagine it's great if you like massive dungeons and mazes. The soundtrack is awesome, but can get a bit repetitive near the end. It drove my brother crazy, but I didn't mind since I thought it was good.

It's pretty primitive compared to later 16-bit JRPGs, but I think it deserves a bit of a pass, considering it is (to my knowledge) the first JRPG on a 16-bit console. It shouldn't really be compared to, say, the SNES installments of Final Fantasy, since it actually came out about 3 months after FF2 on the Famicom.

Enjoying PS2 so far. I especially like that you have an attack for each hand.

However, I ran into a small snag. I got Rudo in my party and when to the Hair Metal Weapons store to get some new implements. I picked up a dagger for Rudo without knowing he was already fully loaded. I can't find it in inventory and I got charged for it. Is this a thing that can happen?

Best part of the series IMO; it's worth your while. Yet, it takes a long time and a lot of nerves to go through the game with its long-winded dungeons. You will spent a shitload of time in a dungeon and finally see a door; you go through it and realize: it was the entrance - you're at the beginning (once) again, but gained a lot of EXP walking through the dungeons.

So basically you need to grind for the first couple of levels, just enough to be able to withstand some shit. I suggest doing this by roaming around just outside of the first city. After that, levels don't account for much, with one exception. Each characters has a bonus level as I like to call it. Basically it works like this. Every 7 levels, Rolph (Your main) will gain a massive stat increase for one trait such as attack or defense, and sometimes it can be as much as a 20 point increase which is fucking impressive. Each character has a "bonus" level and the amount of levels needed in between is different with every character, like Nei's might be 12 or something and Rudo's could be 4. So keep that in mind and remember to save just before you level up, so that way, if you don't like the stats you got, you can reset for better ones.

Now back to what I was saying earlier. Besides the bonus levels, and your initial levels, leveling won't help you by much. What helps is having the best armor/weapons equipped at all times and having a massive stock of Mono/Di/Trimates. Now of course you practically have to grind for money because shit is expensive and you aren't awarded much in fights, so in essence, your still grinding. I say leveling can be useless, because I was in the bio lab, and kicking ass. I was above the recommended levels and I was nearly to the end of the dungeon, and out of nowhere, I come across these two amoebas, and before I have a chance to attack, they've one shotted my entire party and basically levels meant nothing if I couldn't even strike them. That's why it's better to just trek through the dungeon as fast as you can.

Also dungeons can be very long, arduous, and very maze-like, however, keep in mind that there aren't too many real bosses in this game, so most of the time, you reach the end of the dungeon, grab what you need, and teleport out of that bitch.

I only used Shir after arriving on Dezolis on one of my many play-throughs. I got around her "grab and dash" bullshit by loading her up with mates ASAP and also always saving before entering any shops. Having to make a long trek all the way back to your home on Mota just to get her back is indeed a time-consuming pain in the ass.

In the end, she isn't even worth it. Her powerful techs and dual-wielding weapons can be replicated mostly by Kain, and he's far tougher to kill, too. Honestly though, I always just replace Nei with Anna after that particular loss on Mota, and I love having Amy around to heal the whole game. With a couple acid shots or flame staves, she even manages to hold it down and finish things off sometimes. (Rudo is automatically in every ones party. You're a fool if he's not leading yours).

Seems like a good place to ask. I got a copy of Phantasy Star IV today for 30 dollars. No case, but oddly enough it came with the manual. Label looks mostly good though it has some wrinkles in it that tell me it probably had water splashed on it at one point. Manual is in good condition except it looks like someone drew a line on the front in red marker. Other than that there are no other marks, no pages missing, no frays, etc.

Tested it out. Works great. Just wanna know if I got a good deal. It was kind of an impulse buy.
