People talk enough about English patches here that I was wondering what game would make you beat a man to death using a desk lamp if it meant you got to ever play it in English?

The story in Steam Hearts isn't really all that interesting from what I get with my Japanese (I need to replay the entire game again since I've improved considerably since last time I played it...).

Something something beast people taken over by virus, the oceans and stuff have been polluted. You cure them (the bosses) from the virus by first beating them then fucking them with (futa) dick. Although mandick seems to work too in one of the scenes.

Also easily the hardest version.

The saturn version is probably the nicest, but also the easiest. The PCE version has smooth scrolling and presents a bit more of a challenge and, like the saturn version, has the sometimes unintentionally hilarious voice acting.

I'd recommend all versions really...

I forgot to mention that you can fiddle with the settings of the PC-98 version to make it scroll a little bit better than default (at least for me, on emulator, it did). I don't remember exactly what I changed around though, but be prepared to mess around a bit if you wanna play the PC-98 version. (Even just getting a PC-98 emulator up with the correct DIP settings is a bit of a pain in the ass).

Rumormill has it that it's actually going to be Gaijinwork's next announcement sometime in January.

I actually sat down and translated the prologue yesterday for my blog, and I might do more if it's not the game Vic Ireland announces. Still, I think it's in the best interest of the series to leave it alone at least until that announcement.

That being said, I personally avoided it up to this point since the TM series seems to be in a bit of romhacking limbo. I know Byuu was on hiatus with Zero, but I was told by the hacker that byuu (or at least someone else he was in touch with) had some unspoken dibs on the TM series for now. It seems there are a couple other hackers that mention the game constantly, so I'm almost worried that it's potentially an eggshell stompathon if someone actually announces that it'd be started. The rest of the series, maybe not, but especially IV. I think it's because it's so Americanized that everyone kinda latches onto it. It's also the shortest (next to Kabukiden, methinks).

I really hope it is. He did say he was a fan of the series and this entry in particular is one of his favorites. He did also say they attempted a translation of Ziria on the Xbox360 so that they might try their hand at another game in the series doesn't sound too far fetched.

I'm not too familiar with the drama behind fan-made translations and hacks of Japanese games. It seems kind of ridiculous to call dibs on the entire series when you're just working on just one entry in the series that may not even get finished in the first place. But this is just coming from the perspective of someone who just plays the hacks.

Also, I wanted to play it because I find Japan's over-the-top interpretations of American culture hilarious and there's few RPGs out there with that kind of setting. The only other I can think of is Earthbound's Eagleland.

From what I remember, they were actually well on their way with the translation before contracts fell through. Maybe I'm wrong on that though. I do remember him saying in a podcast interview over on ANN though that they were actually all done with Goemon PS2 before the plug was pulled on them, and that a lot of projects fall into the ether like that.

I wouldn't really say it's drama, and maybe I sounded a little too aggressive with that wording. It's just that when people put as much work as that which goes into romhacking and translations from scratch, people can it that as a pretty big disrespect to cross. In the end, there are jut so many games that could be worked on that it's just better in the end to move onto another project. In my honest opinion, I wish that some online communities stopped harping on projects that overlap as much as they do, or that people didn't work on releases that came out after 2010. We would see a much bigger retro translation selection.

And don't take it offensively that I said that about IV. I guess "latches on" was a bitchy word to use too. I agree that I like Iv more than the others for those reasons, because we can relate to it a lot more than the others, having grown up in America. It's my favorite for that reason too.

Saturn games are way harder to hack, based on what I've read. The Playstation was tricky enough, because it was a prime example of people having to come up with some really dodgy programming strategies to make some games work in unique/experimental ways. It's part of why you have to jump through a few hoops to get some games to work (i.e. Xenogears freezing in final battles on anything that isn't a Playstation 1). The Saturn was much more restrictive and inconsistent when it ran shit, and Sega basically left developers out with their asses in the dirt. It's part of why Saturn games are such a pain in the ass to emulate as well.

More often than not, the Playstation versions of these games are wayyyyy easier to hack without making the entire rom collapse on itself.

Actually that makes some things simpler - most developers just tried doing whatever was the easiest solution. The reason why there are so few translations is that the emulators either suck or have no debuggers.

As for games I'd like to see translated the most, Madou Monogatari and Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon on the Saturn.

Have you considered that it may depend on the game? Even with a 20 minute anime episode, a dozen pages of manga or novel it will vary depending on the amount of text and its complexity and video games have even more variety in that regard.
Depending on the platform you may also need time to develop tools for extracting and inserting text.

That article seems very dubious as far as I can tell. I didn't get extremely far in Chaos Angels but it didn't seem much more ero than Wizardry 5.
Even in Dragon Knight 1 you have to work quite a bit until you get to see any nudity and there's no sex in the whole game. The part about the hardware seems like a poor translation.
Late 80s eroge on the PC-88 already offered plenty of variety despite the huge amount of strip Rock-Paper-Scissors and quizzes.

It's a text heavy adventure game and a debut for Grasshopper Manufacture. It was the first game directed by Suda51 after he was let go from Human. It's effectively a pretty dark police drama up until the mid-point. After that point it becomes even darker, and then it sort of becomes batshit insane. Has a Japanese-only sequel on PS2 released near launch called Flower, Sun, and Rain. It was later ported to Nintendo DS and this version for some reason got released in the West. The decision to release it is pretty puzzling because to understand the plot you'd have to be pretty familliar with the Silver Case, yet as we know now, the Silver Case was never translated. They've thought about porting Silver Case to DS, then to 3DS, right now Grasshopper is silent on the matter.

It's much more of a visual novel than adventure game, but the gameplay decisions are for the lack of the better word, baffling. For some reason there are these weird first person segments a-la old school dungeon crawlers where you walk down some corridors and nothing happens, and then you're met with a door, where you have to input a four-digit code, which is randomized everty time you play, and the game never explicitly gives you the code as far as I can gather with my miniscule knowledge of Japanese. These segments supposed to be rare, but I haven't gotten to far in the game to tell you for sure. Overall it's pretty linear and rail-roaded. I make a flash card out of one whenever I feel I am completely comfortable with each syllable. Like If I can go through all of them flawlessly in a quick manner then I add one or two. Besides that, I review them every night at least once before bed so I don't lose anything I've gained there (yeah it's not much but it's still something). Maybe I'm mentally deficient when it comes to learning a new language, it seems to come hard to me and takes a lot of brute forcing into my brain to really stick well. Maybe I just need to make more of an effort.

I might add 1 or 2 today just out of inspiration from this thread. Life/work gets in the way a lot though.

It's not even a language, it's a simple syllabic writing system. You could poorly write English that way.
I prefer starting with Katakana since it has clearer lines and is more useful on its own since a lot of titles and names use it whereas Hiragana is normally encountered together with Kanji.

It's because they started with Hiragana and had trouble adapting to Katakana because they are similar yet different.
Hiragana is more important for Japanese grammar while Katakana is mainly used for loan words and names but it's those loan words and names you really want to understand first.

There are a ton of untranslated games on saturn. From what I understand it's a bitch to even do translation hacks for saturn games, so AFAIK the only translation is shining force 3.

Dragon Force II was translated recently and there's a menu patch for Langrisser III and two other games I'm not familiar with. I think the Princess Crown translation is also close to completion.
