Did anyone use the VMUs outside of the controller when they first came out? Was it cool or did it feel like it really wasn't worth it?

Don't feel like collecting them and getting a picture, but for retro memory cards I just have two normal N64 memory cards, an N64 rumble pak, 3 normal VMUs, one 4-in-1 VMU without a screen so can it still even be called a VMU?, and a rumble pak for the Dreamcast.

The best part about the 4-in-1 VMU is the lack of beeping.

I did. Some of the early games were pretty cool actually.
I had my VMU with my keychain so I played a lot when I could.

I got the animal crossing card a couple weeks ago from goodwill and it had someones village on it. I deleted it because I didn't want to dig out my copy to check it out.

I used them for the chao thing for a bit when I was in summer school one year.

On the topic of memory cards, what is a good place to get PS1 memory cards?

>> No.2159868

>>2159681
ebay. just be worry of counterfeits/bootlegs.
There are some neat ones on amazon, kinda expensive though.

Nothing too remarkable. Some of these, I have no idea where I got them. I still think it is weird that I found that ST Key and Japanese Saturn memory card at a Goodwill in the middle of nowhere in Texas. I would swap out the guts from it and put it in the Rayearth card since it doesn't work, but the insides are different.

Pawn shops that sell old games are a great place. My local Cash Generators always has a selection of ps1 and ps2 memory cards.

I have one of those Performance N64 cards. As far as third-party cards go, it's pretty fucking solid.

>> No.2160295

I've about 5 Saturn ones, plus an action replay and a third party cart.

I had the cart with all my save games corrupted a month or two ago... I ended up desoldering and dumping the flash rom to see if the data is recoverable, and sure enough, only the header block of the cart was corrupted, all the savegame files were still there.

Unfortunately my programmer could not write to that type of flash rom, so I had to figure out how the actual filesystem on the cart worked, and write a tool to extract all my saves from it. Asked a friend to write a Saturn program that can copy them all back from this format, and that's how I saved all my stuff from a dead cart.

There were a few games (Tech Romancer?) that had minigames where earning points in the minigames were transferable to the main game for unlocking crap.

And yes, VMUs were battery draining vampires. What I did with one of them was built an adapter that let me run the thing on 4 AAs. Kinda funny when the battery was larger than the unit itself. But yeah, fuck watch batteries.

I've never actually used them. I always use the rumble pak/memory card combo thing. I've had no trouble with it since I bought it in the late 90's. I never had that many games that used memory cards, though.

Hm, didn't know any game besides like maybe Sonic Adventure You could have your chao on it, right? let you actually transfer things.

If I were to get a rechargeable battery like that, and I've seen they exist, would you have to charge them in a charger or would it charge when it's plugged in?

>> No.2160513

>>2160489
How do you keep your saves?

>> No.2160556

Another trick I used was that I kept those plastic battery tabs that new VMUs came with that prevented battery drain while on t he store selves. When I was done playing the game, I'd insert the tabs back into the device to save battery life. You had to reset the date and clock every time, but that was a minor inconvenience compared to paying for batteries.

Alright, so those little watch battery things. There's rechargeable ones. If I were to put it in a VMU, would it charge while it's plugged into a controller into a Dreamcast when it's on, or would I need to take it out and recharge it in a special charger?

>> No.2160619

>>2160568
You would most likely have to charge them outside the VMU. AFAIK, there's no reason the controller should send current to the standard non-rechargeable watch batteries.

If you can't understand even that much then you definitely couldn't get such an app working. You need 2-300$ worth of equipment just to read the flash rom.

Please tell me you use it for other things too.

You can talk about ps2 here but you have to do it carefully. You can't just make a thread with a ps2 game's boxart and start a general thread.
