When I could, I just used my own name. But my name is 7 characters long and FAR too many games only offer 6 or less, so a lot of times I just use character names from other games. Like I played FF Origins right after I played Wild Arms 3, so everyone is named after WA3 characters.

My dad still does this, and he's 60-something. He asked my help in beating Wind Waker's last boss a couple of days ago, and I was treated to Zelda shouting "BUTTARSE" at me for killing Ganon.

Personally I just name them after myself or use the default name. Comes with having two game-interested brothers, you don't want to forget who 'owns' which file.

I use the name Link for a ton of games because as a kid it was the only official name I knew for any normal-looking video game character. Well as normal as they get compare to characters like Sonic or Mario. As I grew up I notice how stupid that was and unless it is a Zelda game I would name my character Flame. The first non-canon Fullmetal Alchemist anime may have inspired the name but it was a case of original character donut steel and the character I was controlling had nothing related to the anime character beside the nickname in my mind. Later I found that to be stupid as fuck too as a name (more so when the game have nothing to do with fire) so I thought of a more original name Zeru. Just a cool looking group of letters to me and the name was short enough to even be used on the original Dragon Warrior.

While I may make it longer as needed it is generally something with Zeru in it.

I was real mature as a kid.
You had to capture them as Caterpie so they'd have Tackle and Stringshot to get the joke right.

I used to also name hella weak Pokemon after the hardcore ones. Name a rattata something like ZAPDOS. And then I'd do the inverse for the tough ones.

I'd lose matches it, but eh, totally worth it.

When I started ffIX I decided to go with a theme of naming my characters after edged sword-like weapons. Zidane was "Gladius", "Steiner was 'Talwar', Freya was 'Kaskara', Quina was 'Yataghan', etc...

I always named Link "Fuck me" because the sidekick/npcs would always say your name and then a statement which sometimes turned out amusing. notably Navi saying "Fuck me, it's cold in here."

My Pokemon trainers were always "I'm Sorry I" or naming a pokemon that as well. "I'm Sorry I fainted"

for final fantasy games in particular i would name every character the name of the main villain. Final Fantasy 6 and 7 in particular are really good for this

in other rpgs one character would be whatever their name is plus "!?" so everyone would be surprised to see them
