2157235 No.2157235 [Reply] [Original]

So last night, we managed to wrangle up some Descent games on /v/. But since Descent was released in 1995, it's obviously /vr/ material.

So here we are: Descent /vr/.

>What is Descent?
It's the greatest 6DOF game ever made. Released by Interplay in 1995, you fly a ship through mines on planets and moons, blowing shit up with big guns. The sequels, Descent 2 (1996) and Descent 3 (1999) are also welcome ITT.

>What is 6DOF?
It means "Six Degrees of Freedom." You can move forward/backward, slide up/down, and slide left/right through 3-D space.

>How do I play this with you guys?

Get the original games and then install the Rebirth source port. http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/
It would also be handy to look into getting the Ranger Level Packs from http://www.descentrangers.com/WebContent/Index?key=Downloads
Just be sure not to put the D1 levels into the D2 folder, or you're going to have a bad time.

>> No.2168667

So the thing that makes it bad is that it's not descent 1? Doom isn't descent 1 is that also bad?

New engine is generally considered a good thing if it's improved and they usually are. New enemies, ships and weapons are a good thing because it's a fucking game, that's how games do.

So you've effectively formed an opinion of the game based on nothing but it being a new game? Why did you even bother spending twenty minutes if you were just going to get mad that it's not the same exact game as Descent 1? It also seems like you might have been expecting just singleplayer missions for Descent 1. They have those.

Okay at least we're kind of getting somewhere. I know it's hard to grasp that this is a forum but you can you know, discuss things. I mean at least you're starting to give a reason but maybe elaborate on that reason a little bit? It wouldn't hurt.

>i guess if you compare it to doom you could say its the doom 3 of the descent series?

Except when people suggest Doom 3 is bad they don't sit there and say 'new engine, new monsters and new weapons.' They say, the pacing is poorly done with jumpscares rather than having multiple enemies. The level design is constricting in comparison, the integrating sprinting button slows the overall movement down, the pitch black sections where you have to switch to a flashlight instead of holding it or having them on your weapon in a rather dark environment is not just a retarded concept in general because you can hold a gun and a flashlight at the same time, it makes the game less fun because it shifts the shooting element to the background in favor of crap melee or favoring spraying the dark. The usage of audio and video logs while having decent production could have use a more streamline way of extracting the data or more control rather than listen to someone blab on and on... because of nature extremely linear level design, logs, monster encounters the replayability is pretty much nothing and the entire game plays on novelty and shoehorning survival horror elements into the game rather than on emphasizing good gameplay techniques that contributed to the enjoyability and quality of the first two games.

Notice how Doom 3 isn't like Doom 1 or 2 for you know... reasons. Reasons exist, you can talk about them.
For example you might start with how the movement is different and why that put you off.

>> No.2168751

You know what Descent 3 did wrong? The robots. The robots in Descent 1 and 2 are fucking huge, their sizes measured in meters in the briefings. They start off in D1 as mining bots and sentries, but quickly adapt military tech into their arsenal.

D2 was similar. Even though they start out looking alien, the early D2 robots are still mining bots and security, but they quickly change to death-dealing machines whose sole purpose is to blow you the fuck up.

D3's robots lack the same punch. There's sentries, but they don't make you fear them as much as D1/2's robots did. For example, D3's fusion bot lacks the same commanding presence that D1's fusion hulk had. Not to mention that he's crosseyed and can't hit you in a large room The bots spin out of control when hit by vauss, and the weapons they shoot seem like fireworks at times.

These guys scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. They would stealthily sneak up on you, and then all of a sudden they were all over your canopy slicing the guns off your ship and pushing you into subway trains.

The Juggernauts were pretty cool too, and the Omega and missile troopers would seriously fuck you up if they got in close. Also there were those big tracked mofos that would fling Megas at you.

I think a lot of the difference came to the size of the levels. I think if you ran into most of the D3 bots in the same tiny tunnels and cramped quarters of the first two games they would thrash you just the same...although there isn't quite anything comparable to those damned insufferable vulcan drillers from the first game.

Maximum freedom of movement, minimal surface area, and enough dakka to make enemies want to keep their distance.

Of course, I wasn't considering the fact that my roundship might have to navigate a space with an atmosphere; I just assumed it would be doing all its fighting in space. I realized it might be the first Descent speedrun I've ever watched, in two decades. It makes me feel quite nervous, as I'm myself very slow and careful player. Tips as in "I haven't played in years, how do I get started again," or "How the fuck do I fly this ship?"

I'll assume the first one because it's fucking 3 AM.

Okay, so the first thing to do is to actually get the game. It's available on gog.com for cheap these days.

Your second task is to install the Rebirth port. It's the standard source port that everyone here uses to play the game on modern systems. http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/

After that, set up a pilot in the game and set your controls.

(Optional) Next, download some level sets. There's been a few posted in the thread, and one in the OP. Levels go into the missions folder in the rebirth directory, and can be opened in-game. All multiplayer missions can be played in single-player mode if you want to explore them. The menu doesn't differentiate between singleplayer and multiplayer maps, so you'll just have to try it and see what it is.

>> No.2178648

I already got the source port running (with the demos the demo for now, gonna go grab it at GOG within the month).

As for "How the fuck do I fly this ship?" ... well, that's another bit I'll try to help explaining.

Descent Rebirth adds a few options to the game that weren't there in the base game, such as implementing mouse wheel scrolls as an input (I use it to change weapons).

Control layout is personal preference, obviously. You want to be able to fly forward and reverse, while combining left/right strafe, and up/down slide simultaneously.
You also want to be able to pitch the ship up/down and turn left/right, and bank. Banking is important to keep your ship oriented.

This is where it gets tricky. Descent allows you to combine movement on vectors to go faster (chroding). If you combine forward with up/left strafing, you'll be trichording, which is the fastest movement you can do in Descent 1. You'll have to tilt the nose of the ship down and to the side to move forward. It's a bit harder to steer, but banking helps.

>> No.2178661

>>2178648
I should ask now, are you more of a singleplayer person, or a multiplayer person?

>>2178650
Trichording doesn't have to be forward/up/left. But for now, just focus on learning how to trichord forward. Practice in empty levels, and learn how to keep the speed through twists and turns. It takes practice, but trichording makes you more difficult to hit.

More of a Single Player one.

>> No.2178670

>>2178662
That makes things a little simpler, since a lot of people doing multiplayer anarchy will have years of experience. Unfortunately, I'm one of those people, so my singleplayer strategy/tactics are a little rusty.

While speedrunning the game is nice, just keep in mind that it's still okay to take your sweet ass time in Descent. Learn how to utilize your weapons, and learn the behavior and attacks of the enemies.

A general tip: It's easier to dodge homing weapons in a large open area than an enclosed space.

IMO Descent 2 has much better level design that Descent 1. Some of the new features of Descent 2 (shootable switches, new fly-through switches, exploding lava textures, the six "worlds", new robot AI types, etc.) gives D2 levels more variation. Also the level designers started to get used to designing 3D environments (Descent 1 was a learning phase, Descent 2 was "now we know how to do this, let's see how far we can take things"). Some levels (12 and 16 come to mind) are very large, contain large halls and tunnels, but also have twisty parts. Descent 1 feels slightly rigid after Descent 2.

Some levels in Descent 2 feel like they're rejected Descent 1 levels, or made right after Descent 1 was finished. Level 5 is one example of this. There's just something in the level geometry that gives me enormous Descent 1 vibes. Another one is level 19. Again I can't put my finger on it, it just feels like that.

Like Dooms and Quakes, the retail levels are boring compared to many fan-made levels. Nevertheless, both Descent 1 and 2 are excellent games.

(Funny sidenote: some levels in D1/D2 are upside-down and even sideways. I was doing some exploration/hacking and noticed the vertex coordinates looked "wonky"; then I realized my ship's vertical coordinate was increasing when I was actually going downwards in a tunnel. You'll never notice this in-game, because the ship can be rotated in any direction and the camera rotates along with it, and 3D vector math does not care which way things are oriented. Everything is relative.)

>IMO Descent 2 has much better level design that Descent 1
I like all these additions you mentioned, but I think I like D2 for its weapon additions moreso than its level design, and still prefer the level design of D1.

The wall-triggers were sometimes frustrating and unintuitive. Sure, getting lost is part of Descent, but to deal with these, sometimes you had to strip-search the entire mine (neither the Guidebro nor the map could help you with these).

Also, I believe there were some bugs with the triggers. For example, there is that one area which traps you in a box of force fields. You are supposed to destroy a bunch of wall-triggers to let yourself out, but I believe you can get trapped again, with no escape (since the wall-triggers are already destroyed). This happened to me in co-op - though I believe it has happened to me in single-player, too. Also, there is this one level which places an invisible wall between two rooms for some unknown reason (wish I could remember the specifics - I think it is an Alien 1 level).

Also, though this is purely a personal, aesthetic opinion, D2 lacked nice "main rooms" - you know, big rooms which served as "hubs." (e.g. in D1 levels 2, 3, 5 with the X-shaped room, 10 with all the lava, the one Jupiter level with the tower in the middle). Flying through one of those rooms is mad comfy.

What do you guys think about D3's weapon balance?

>> No.2188826

>>2188665
D3 weapons are more unique in that the upgrades were rarely just "X does more damage" or "Y has more shots", though admitted some were like that. Because more time had passed between 2-3 than had 1-2, there was more time to think about the weapons, and so there was more uniqueness.

I have problems with 3, weapons weren't really one of them. It's a different type of game of game, and least from how it feels. The outdoor transition mechanic changed it from a slightly claustrophobic experience to a much more open and dodgy kind of playing field with some chock points. Also, the hitboxes were significantly smaller, making hitting with some weapons significantly harder than with others.

I guess you could call me a rose tinted glasses kind of person, but I feel the first game had a good balance, even if the level design and level difficulty was all over the place.

>> No.2188827

To be fair, there is a serious trade off for most of those. Helix, Pheonix, and their like are SERIOUS power drains. You can bring Helix into a fight, but unless you've already got a recharge room on lockdown, especially nearby, it's a terrible waste. That lets for SOME strategy without just throwing the old guns out as useless.

I don't recall for certain, but I think Guass drains ammo pretty fast too.

Easily my least favorite thing about D3. I feel like going back and playing it sometimes, but the way everything squirms away from you is super annoying.

D3's weapons were all over the place. Massive plasma nerf from D2->D3, but fusion was again useful, not to mention really fucking cool. Napalm was fun, but the actual flamethrower was limited to close-range and nearly pointless in multiplayer ship-to-ship combat.
Vauss was another weapon I was surprisingly pleased with. It's nigh impossible to use against robots because it flung them around the room, but it tore a new asshole on anything fixed, and ripped player ships apart.

Lasers and super lasers survived the D2->D3 transition well. They did what D2 should have done and made lasers and super lasers separate weapons. Lasers are more efficient, but super lasers more powerful.

Level 6 was pretty cool, but otherwise the music is odd, and really out of place in Descent.

No, but you need it temporarily if you want the data files out of the game CD. You can't just copy them from it, they're compressed some way. The old DOS installer does not work under modern 64-bit Windowses anymore, not sure if it works even under 32-bit Windows. So unless you get the files from some other source, DosBox is what you briefly need.

I may be preaching to the choir here, but I honestly think Descent is one of the greatest games ever made. It is at least my favorite game of all time.

No game since D2 has been able to match this unique, full-3D playing experience. Space sims are nice (one of my favorite genres in general), but without the walls of a mine, you are often limited to a few dogfight styles. The fact you are flying around in a mine which alternates between claustrophobic and having wide, open (yet varied) spaces makes the gameplay of D1/D2 very interesting.

For D1,
Neptune is a good tiny level.
Conquest is a good level for 2-6 players, it also uses the third dimension a bit.
Minerva is a good larger map -- be sure to add extra duplicate weapons, though.
Martyr is cool, and features a MIDI version of an Iron Maiden song. 2-5 players.
Athena R2 is a good map for 2-4
The Manes is a good level set (4 levels) for 3+ players.
Penumbra is a good chaotic map for 3+ players... be sure to duplicate weapons for maximum anarchy.
Vesta is a good extra large map, it's a bit old but it can fit 8 players.
Zodiac is another classic, 2+ playes, it can even fit 6 if you duplicate weapons.
Nocturnal is good for 2-4.
Jolt is a great large level, fits 4-6 easily, and up to 8 with duplicate weapons.
Vamped is good for 2-6, but anything more than 4 is pushing it.

For D2,
Jade Diem is a good one. 4-6.
Kegparty is a classic, 4-6.
Kegparty 2 is bigger, 6-8
Neptune, 2-4
Neptune 2, 2-4 players
Abyss 1.1, fits 4-8 players. Has smart mines for max lulz.
Megadeath, 4-6. Earthshaker level.

Athena D2: A lot larger than Athena from D1. 4+ players at least. It doens't look like that good of a level, but it'd be worth trying once. Helix cannon.
Dissent 2: Very small level. 2 players, 3 maximum.
Gigadeath 2: Earthshaker level. 3-5 players. There's like 5 Gigadeath levels, so take your pick.
Jade Diem: Good level for 4+ players.
Jolt: D2 version works for 4+ players.
Kegparty: 4-6 players.
Kegparty 2: Bigger than the original Keg, get at least 6 players for this one.
Meat Grinder v1.1: Good for 4+ players. Video of action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyL2W9mJEHk
Pyromania: Good level for 4+ players. Features Omega cannons.
Thick as Thieves: Robo-Anarchy level. 4-6 players.

Level 13 is my favorite D1 level. It might be because of the kick-ass music. Other levels I like are 7 and 15.

Descent 2 levels 2, 12 and 17 are all my favorites. Level 7 is funny because you can skip large parts of it if you know about that one hidden switch. This kind of trickery is rare for retail Descent levels.

You should do a full Descent 2 speedrun.

For the level editors, sorry, can't help you much. The last time I touched DEVIL was around 2001 or 2. I do remember the movement keys were partially or entirely the same as in Descent. One trick (not sure if trick, but this was not mentioned in the manual at one point) was that if you select more than one vertex, then right-click a number field and type in a new coordinate, that edit gets applied to all of the selected vertices. If you left-click, it edits only the last selected vertex. Or something like that.

And save often and in separate files, because DEVIL is ridiculously buggy. I lost more levels than I finished them when it crashed during saving and corrupted the file.

I guess it wants a specific version of Descent to work. It's been too long to remember the details anymore, but huge parts of the editor code is/was intertwined with the game code, so if you got a standalone editor executable, I have no idea what happens if you run it without a matching game executable (I can't even remember if it was a standalone executable, or if it was something you activated through a command-line switch). The only version I tried Miner with was my own Descent build. What version Parallax used, I've no idea.

For some reason D3 has a really big default deadzone that makes it hard to use a controller or sensitive joystick. There's a command line switch that might help:

>-deadzone1

Specifies the size of the deadzone for a joystick.

k is a value from 0.0 to 0.5 sets the deadzone to the specified fraction of the total joystick range.
-deadzone0 sets the first joystick and -deadzone1 sets the second. For example, "-deadzone0 0.2" sets the deadzone for joystick 0 to 20% of its total range.

Just figured I'd pop in to mention that Descent's 20th birthday is in two weeks (US Release, at least - February 28th, 1995). I'm planning on hosting a big race in celebration on SpeedRunsLive around 2 PM EST. All players welcome, whether blind or seasoned veteran.

One thing I'm still trying to work out is what difficulty to have it on; would definitely appreciate thoughts on that. Hotshot is the standard for the speedrunning community, but I'm concerned that the difficulty might result in every single blind player (and even some experienced players) dropping out partway through. Trainee gets run a bit too, but it's kinda babby tier as far as enemy reaction times and I think takes much of the intensity out of the game. Rookie never gets run, but it might be an acceptable compromise for this situation?

>> No.2234271

I spent a *long* time on that level, because the shareware Descent did not have mid-level saving. That came in the registered versions. You had to complete the level in one sitting. Those Drillers were almost completely unbeatable with the level 1 lasers you always had to start with. I finally completed the level with only single-digit shields left. I remember the first fusion hulk on the secret level well. Sometimes I'd hit him once, let the door close, and wait a few minutes. Usually, by then, he would be away from the door, and I'd be safe to come out. Only later did I discover, to my surprise, that he usually retreated to the alcove up top where the cloak was at. It's a damn shame that Descent 3 sources have never been released.

Descent 1 and 2 will continue to live, because they can be ported to any platform. But Descent 3 will wither and die without emulators and virtual machines.

Reading Wikipedia pages of Parallax Software, Interplay, Outrage Entertainment and Volition gives quite a grim view. I wonder if anyone today knows who owns the rights to the source code, if the source even exists anymore. It's easy to misplace a few hard drives and boom! It's all gone.
