I have to say, after having played the original and the ports (SNES and GBC) several times, I prefer the original. The ports feel like they were really made for people who had already played the original, and just wanted a kind of New Game+ experience. The new class offers little, the board game and medal collection are of dubious real value and the items they give you definitely ramp down the difficulty, along with bonus stat boosts at character creation and what felt like an increased MP total (especially on Jester -> Sage builds).

I played around with the ports but I ultimately go back to the original now whenever I want to play the game.

This is the best version of Gauntlet 1.

Nearly arcade-perfect, but more than anything the music is epic as fuck.

Furthermore, it's not based on the final revision that fucked up the balance and difficulty of the game. So the Wizard and Warrior are worth using.

The Quest mode is the icing on the cake. Fantastic mode where you go through castles, not levels, meaning you may have to backtrack in order to find proper routes. Also includes stores where you can buy stronger equipment, Boss fights against dragons (like in Gauntlet II but with more variety), items that grant special
abilities like floating and rebounding shots, etc.

No slowdown even when there are 50 enemies on-screen, although there's sprite flickering.

-Very accurate port (based on the best version of Gauntlet arcade)
-Fantastic music (the original game had no music)
-Adds an excellent completely new game mode
-4 players

Hellfire (Genesis)

Search on Google: "Hellfire Mega Drive 1cc" for a good explanation why.

I've played both versions extensively (I'm not the author of that website) and the Genesis version is fantastic.
Another port that's better than the original is Snow Bros. for the Mega Drive. Snow Bros. is one of the best arcade puzzle-platformers ever and the MD version is even better.

Made by the original developers (Toaplan - and fuck no, Tengen did not make it - they only published it) - it includes an intro and ending, and several new levels played with new characters after you beat the original levels.

The game mechanics, graphics, practically everything is arcade-perfect. The only thing that I found different is that the MD version doesn't have the last boss music. Probably because the last boss in the MD version isn't the last boss of the game anymore.

I think the SOTN version included on Dracula X Chronicles is better than the original.
Some people complain about the new english voice acting, but honestly I think both old and new english VA is bad, at least the PSP version gives the option to select japanese audio and, along with the new, better retranslated script, I think it makes for the best version in that regard. I know some people grew fond of the old, corny english VA because of the "what is a man" meme and what not, but nothing beats Wakamoto's dracula.
It also includes the extra familiars from the japanese version along with their voice clips and in the Fairy's case (not to be confused with the Fairie), a nice vocal song called Nocturne.
Then there's the Maria mode, and while she was also playable on the Saturn version, Maria is so much better on the PSP, she uses her moveset from Rondo of Blood, has new animations for the clash attacks with the animals and she's also really fast.

The only downside is maybe having to play on a smaller screen (even if you hook up the PSP to a CRT, the image will be reduced), and the aspect ratio is slightly wider than on the PS1 (no big deal, it doesn't really look bad, almost the same as on the Saturn version).
PSP also lacks R2 and L2 buttons, so sometimes you have to keep remapping actions to L and R, although I just went with L for wolf, R for bat and L+R for mist, no big problem.

Last but not least, I also never liked "I am the Wind" as the ending song.
I know it's cool that they used a sort of unexpected pop ballad song instead of something that sounds more Castlevania-ish, but I honetly like the new piece Yamane composed for the ending of PSP SOTN (which is NOT the Lament of innocence track that was used on the PSN/XBLA version, this one was a new track called Mournful Serenade, composed specifically for this PSP version, as far as I know).

Uh, no, they're not the same.
The GBC version is a remake of the SNES version. It has additional features such as Monster Medals and a second bonus dungeon alongside the features of the SNES remake, which had battle animation, tiny medals, additional equipment, an additional class, new mechanics, Pachisi tracks, and a bonus dungeon.

The iOS/Android versions are ports of a Dumbphone Mobile version released in Japan some ten years ago. That Mobile version is a stripped down version of the SNES version. It's missing Pachisi tracks, battle animation, has redone overworld sprites that IMO look worse than the original, has worse music and obviously is missing the additional GBC extras.

The iOS/Android versions are not the same as the GBC version and it is most definitely NOT the superior version. It is also the opinion of many that the SNES version is superior to the GBC version and the best version overall.

Dracula X is the most flat boring shit in the series. It's still a great game but it's not better than rondo lol. To be technical, the N64 port has muffled voices because it uses a Factor 5-developed 15:1 ratio voice compression codec. And the FMVs aren't as high quality.

Something worth considering, though is that the Resident Evil 2 for N64 floating around on ROM sites is actually the REVISED RE2 1.1 version. I tracked down the 1.0 rom, and its layout is drastically different to every other version. There's more difference between US 1.0-1.1 then there is between the PAL and Japanese version when comparing the raw rom data.
