Does this board have a shitposting problem, or are people here actually capable of discussing great games here?

For me it's because it's because it's getting to play a Nintendo game, except the with a better story, or maybe it is because I have played too many modern platformers and the bar has finally started to lower on my part, hard to tell which it is.

Klonoa was a great platformer, the action sequences and puzzles were constant and well-made, and the cutesy art-style and story made it very relaxing to play.

Unfortunately, the gaming industry is trying to establish itself as "mature" at the moment so we will not see anything like this from a professional development studio for a long while.

Or ever again

Cawadooty probably tries to aim for the 12-18 male demographic mostly. There's some irony in that Klonoa was marketed to a similar demographic back in the day.

It doesn't help that the most recent game I'd compare Klonoa to is that japanese megaman clone with the cross-dressing furries.

Maybe it's all downhill from here.

Or more hopefully, the furry community realizes it can use it's talent for else than just create pr0n, plenty of skilled people there willing to work for a buck there, if they ever evolve other styles than le-fap by accident, it might get the ball rolling.

>> No.2152330

>>2152317

The "furry community" is mostly a porn-sharing thing now. I wouldn't want to play any of the games they could produce.

You would need some talented folks who put the concept of anthropomorphism to some considered use within a game. Klonoa was one of many that used it for marketing appeal. I'd love to see a game where animal characters have some gameplay purpose (e.g. using heightened senses in a detective game, a night-vision stealth game, idk)

>> No.2152336

>>2152263
I'm inclined to disagree. The gaming industry has already established itself as mature and the era of gritty realistic FPS is waning. What we are seeing now is the era of cartoonish graphics, lighthearted atmosphere and heaps of cheap meme references and "lolsorandom" "meta" humor. Look at the most popular and influential PC games for example: Borderlands, League of Legends, Team Fortress. Heaps of games are following their footsteps, even the lackluster contemporary continuations of former giants like Age of Empires. Cartoonish stylistics hiding outdated graphics, "haha so funny unicorns farting rainbows while spewing lolcats captions" sort of atmosphere.

I'm kinda going off on a tangent here, feel free to ignore my ramblings. Though games like Klonoa are still but a distant memory in our era, because genuine cuteness and cartoonishness without being "ironic" and "subversive" is still not popular.

That is hardly what I meant, more along the lines that people still make stink when they discover some strange aspects about the private life of a public figure, as if it's newsworthy, that for example a CEO of a large company balloon production company, is into fucking ballons or that people swear that they will never buy another Apple product again because Tim Cook is gay.

I am actually fine with how it is now, people that are interested can seek that shit out, while the family friendly stuff is what is presented to the public eye, I mean if Carl Barks produced smut on the side, would it really detract from his other works?

Sorry if I misinterpreted your post, I would argue that the stuff "people that are interested" can seek out would very quickly become public knowledge if it's kinky enough. The whole furry thing is socially acceptable some forms (Disney) but the porn is not.

Whether it's right of wrong aside,
why take the inevitable negative hit? Just keep that stuff private.

Well, Namco really didn't market the games well out here if memory serves. Doesn't surprise me it never really took off (what does surprise me is that they actually localized as many games as they did for the series).

On that note, I really ought to give Klonoa 2 a try sometime. Main issue being that the bulk of copies I see around where I live are a bit more than I'm wanting to pay (nearly $30), and most are in pretty bad condition or incomplete, unfortunately. Maybe somewhere down the road.

I dunno, considering the game has dream-like tendency, it seems to mention that moment when you realise your dreaming, but you want to stay, the game actually has the various things you'll see in dreams.

>Something odd happens

>You check it out

Much like the first two stages

>Something bad happens, like a relative dies

When Klonoa's grandfather dies

>Things begin to go fuck tonnes weird

Last areas of the game

>Realising its a dream, as your brain tells you so

>You still want to stay, as you don't know what the real world I like. But you are still forced to leave.

When Huepow reveals to Klonoa that its a dream, and that you must wake up.

Its simple really.

I hate it when nostalgiafags whine about the Wii remake despite being much better than the original. Too bad it didn't sold well enough to make a third Klonoa. Still I'm surprised that Namco supported this francise for so long despite not being a big seller. Now if only someone translate the rpg spin-offs.

The mid to late 90s was a really bizarre time for video game ads. It felt like they were trying to gross you out more than actually advertise their game.

If you mean that Klonoa ARPG on the GBA, as far as I've heard the GBA is a bit hard to code text patches for or something, due to character/line limitations, lack of people experienced with it, etc. As such there's only a small handful of completed ones, and some of the few still in progress (Like Swordcraft Story 3) have encountered issues being finished.

>>2155901
Well I certainly wouldn't say they were ineffective at getting one's attention. I still remember that one Yoshi's Island ad that had some fat guy stuffing himself at a restaurant until he exploded all over everyone, and while not /vr/, some of those PS2 and PSP ads were absolutely baffling and still helped their systems sell well.

Still, I wouldn't exactly call an ad that seems to compare Klonoa to a venereal disease all that effective, especially if you're aiming it towards kids/young teens that are less likely to get the joke, so to speak.

>>2155415
You ought to at least give the PS1 original a try sometime. I think they have it on the PSN if you don't feel like shelling out however much people are asking for a copy these days (I recall it being as high as $80 a while back, and even the Wii remake was pretty pricy to get complete last I saw since it didn't sell very well either).

The funny thing is that I explicitly remember this ad from back in the day and had no idea it was for a Gundam game until now.

I mean, the advertising worked in that it was memorable, but not in the way they wanted, that's for sure.

Admittedly it's been a while since I last looked, but where I live copies aren't too available, but at the time complete, used copies were going for a good $45-50. Though I suppose "complete" is the keyword. I'm really not fond of buying disc based games that don't have the case and manual.

If they've gone down in price I suppose that's good for those interested in it though.

Nice. I haven't gone looking into the Wii version much (mostly because where I live I don't see it much to begin with and when I do it will most likely be more than I'm willing to spend on a used Wii game). I got lucky finding a PS1 copy myself though: $35 for it last year and in absolutely amazing shape (whoever previously owned it certainly did a good job taking care of it compared to a lot of PS1 games I see these days; even had the old "upcoming Namco games" pamphlet inside as well), when the average price online was a good $80 or so.

Did you just want a copy of it in some form or another, or do you have a Japanese PS1 (or PS2 or PS3, however you go about playing your PS1 games) to avoid the region lock with?

And yeah, that's why I tend to scout my options for a while before resorting to buying an older, used game online on the off chance a copy shows up locally, possibly at a cheaper price if at the right store.

I wanted to have it in some form, but planned to actually play through it using swap trick..

I had been thinking about getting it for a while, and the prices for anything like that at a local store would have just been stupid, if I could even find it. Both the Japanese copy and the US one were bought on ebay.

>> No.2156023

>>2156019
Yeah. Thankfully there's one local store where I live that tends to be cheaper on prices, and even for games that are otherwise expensive anywhere you look, like Suikoden II, Earthbound, and .hack, they can be a good $20-30 cheaper than other local stores and online prices as well (granted, I'm still not inclined to pay $130 for Suikoden II just because it's $150 elsewhere, but the option is a nice savings for those that are inclined towards it). Was really surprised to have seen Klonoa there for that cheap. Hell, I was kind of surprised to even see it there in general; neither the PS1 nor Wii version show up much where I live. Think I've only seen the PS1 version once since then and that store wanted at least $50 for it, maybe more now if they still have it.
