Yeah I've already visited those dungeons.
I'm doing a knight's quest for Auriel's Shield right now and since I had to talk to that witch anyway I brought a letter of credit worth 200k with me in any case and summoned hircine. Thought that'd be fucking great to have Hircine's ring, which I have right now, shifting into werewolf form back and forth at will sounded pretty awesome.
Little did I know you actually have to have contracted lycanthropy beforehand already, I thought you could just use it at will. Fuck!
Going to find a werewolf dungeon now...

But boy, do you need to visit lots of dungeons for those artifacts. Liches and vampires everywhere. Even had a 2nd Deadra Lord as random spawn hanging around again. Seriously those fuckers are really easy, but the anchient liches are nightmares when you meet them around a corner.

Here's a helpful link: http://www.jceason.dircon.co.uk/dagger/dfspellm.htm

However, where those spells recommend target at range, I'd recommend area at range (assuming you have spell absorption). See, target-at-range spells are sort of glitchy and have a tendency to not work or hit at all. In dungeons they tend more often than not to not hit, and outside they basically have no effect.

By contrast, area-at-range spells, though more expensive, always hit - whether you're indoors or outdoors - they have a surprisingly impressive range, and if you have spell absorption (which if you're playing a spellcaster and you made a custom class you really should have), then, if you're within range of the spell (which you probably will be) it will technically affect you, but be absorbed, giving you back all the mana you spent casting it. Basically, free AOE long-ranged spell you can make as strong as you want. The only problem is that it tends to bounce enemies around, which can get a bit scary if they end up bouncing into you. However, if you shoot it in front of an enemy, you can (with a little timing) keep repeatedly bouncing them back and keep them away from you indefinitely.

>> No.2142953

I love when you get sent to a dungeon, and the exterior is more than just a little hill with a door in it. Sometimes I'm sent to old castles with multiple entrances, or forts that are falling apart (also with multiple entrances). I like to scale the walls and use the upper doors to start the dungeon. Too bad each door goes to the exact same spot in the dungeon.

>> No.2142987

>>2142953

Yeah, I think that's one case where less randomization would've helped. Like, dungeons are divided into different sorts (castle, ruined castle, barbarian stronghold, orc fort, animal nest/cave, etc.). Well, personally, I think it would've been better if they'd just had a few set exteriors for each type. So that, for instance, all castles and barbarian strongholds look like castles, all ruined castles look like, well, ruined castles, all orc forts look like Orsinium I guess, etc., and the only dungeons that just look like little hills with door would be animal nests.

nuke/absorb is pretty overpowered, spell absorpstion is really an incredible trait to take at character creation. I've created cheap aoe spells that cover 3 disciplines of magic each, just stand against a wall and cast/recast a couple of times (I rather do it half a minute long by now since most of my disciplines are in the upper 70s or 80s and it takes way longer to be sure of a skill up) and you're fine.

Man that would be so fucking awesome.

Come to think of it though, the cities in general could've been a bit better designed. I mean, layout-wise they feel like Medieval cities, but there should've been open-air markets, maybe some occasional (albeit probably fairly rare) NPCs on horses or carts, maybe a slight increase to the chances of enemies spawning in towns (it happens already, being attacked by human enemies in towns, but seems fairly rare (also werewolves, but that's literally only happened to me once). Beggars would've been nice, too, and come to think of it, maybe a bit more... density I guess?

I mean, at the very least, how hard would it have been to put shopkeepers outside behind/around little market-stands, maybe with boxes? They could've had little item graphics as the things you click to buy things, or just had the buy menu connected to the outside shopkeepers themselves. That would've been cool, I think.

For that matter, though, they could've programmed roads to automatically be generated following a rough path between settlements, and maybe had some friendly NPCs (probably guards and merchants on carts) spawn along those roads.

too much work for a game on that scale. just look at what we already have, one can easily forget how big the game actually is, everything you want in it would have been additional months of design at the very least.

>Bethesda claims that the scale of the game is the size of Great Britain: around 229,848 square kilometers/ 88,745 sq miles, though the actual size of the map is 161,600 square kilometers, or 62,394 square miles. The game world features over 15,000 towns, cities, villages and dungeons for the player's character to explore. According to Todd Howard, game director and executive producer for Bethesda, the game's sequel, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, is 0.01% the size of Daggerfall, but most of Daggerfall's terrain was randomly generated. The explorable part of Morrowind, Vvardenfell, is 9.3 square miles, or 24 square kilometers. By comparison,The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is approximately 22 square miles, or 56.97 square kilometers, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is 14.3 square miles, or 37.1 square kilometers, with a quarter of this terrain as unplayable, as it is stuck behind invisible borders.

>In Daggerfall, there are 750,000+ non-player characters (NPCs) for the player to interact with, compared to the count of around 1,000 NPCs found in Morrowind and Oblivion. However, the geography and the characters in these later games are much more detailed.

I dunno, the city-related stuff would just basically be a few extra NPCs generated in towns and a slight alteration to the shop system, and the road thing would still be auto-generated (once generated, the data for any given province (like anything else) is stored in memory AFAIK, so really it would just be generating road textures in a line between settlements. >Honestly, I have no idea why that's the default option.

Because it was the year 1996.
People back then grew up with Eye of the Beholder-style RPGs. Eye of the Beholder was just 5 years old back then with the last game of its line (part 3) being released just 3 years back in 1993.
Doom was considered a complete different genre then and developers still had problems creating a proper 3D engine (as you an plainly see in this very game) that wasn't a licensed Doom Engine.
Most people were simply used to playing RPGs like that, you can even switch the speed down at character creation to make it easier for that type of play.

Not directly related, but being completely unable to pause the game turn-style (except for inventory- and character management) actually pissed a few of my friends off.

It's a game that despite it's very limited graphics manages to build an interesting world to inhabit. If you're not already familiar with it, you can spend hours with the in-game library picking up the lore on what's going on. The dungeon crawling element is pretty unlike most other games given the huge and sprawling nature of most. The quests in the game can be quite smart and few feel like filler material despite all but the main quest technically being randomly generated filler. Nothing that you'll beat your head against the wall at how stupid it is (like many quest lines in Skyrim for an easy comparison).

It's got serious personality as a title, even if you've played it's successors. You get thrown into a surprisingly harsh and challenging (especially for modern gamers familiar only with Skyrim and maybe Oblivion) world with little idea what's going on and a hell of a lot to do in it.

Detail is that Daggerfall does best. In a weird kinda way. Well, that and size. And detail only in terms of a mid-90s game. But yes, detail in Daggerfall is one of those things that when you see it, you can really appreciate that effort went into it. Like a lot of the rooms in the main quest dungeons, getting a custom lay-out, even with bits of furniture, really helped them feel more special.

I think Morrowind set the standard though for all following games in terms of pointless but immersive detail, even if it didn't have schedules for people and stuff (without a mod). Though in some ways, the lack of the Radiant AI thing actually helped it (and Daggerfall even more so) be more immersive because there was fewer things to break and ruin suspension of disbelief. That it's a more primitive system means you don't feel so odd when you do something crazy and no-one reacts as when that happens in the latter games. Or it just breaks.

That Kill-A-Dragon quest by the Knights orders is pretty great. Took it for the 2nd time now and the Knights of the Dragon in Daggerfall sent me to the exact same place as before (Ruins of Old Gwynyrrya's Place) and the quest mob was at the exact same location in the dungeon (just out of the entrance room, then down the left corridor until it parts and there's a room between the parting where the dragonling is). Fucking easy 5000 points for a soulgem.

Are artifacts repaired by items enchanted with the "repair items" effect without a modified z.cfg? That sanguine rose looks bitchin

>> No.2145618

>>2145472
Yes they are, but some of the artifacts may kill themselves before repairing kicks in (like that dagger, it basically insta kills one enemy but applies the same damage to itself in the process so it's pretty much a 1-shot item).
According to
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Enchanting_Items#Advantages
and
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Enchanting_Items#Tips
repair item goes down the list of your equipped items and checks if there's something that needs repairing, after that it checks the rest of your inventory, going from left to right panels, top to bottom.
It does not constantly repair, but only kicks in when you sleep. if you have 1 repair-item it increases a not-new item by one level. every subsequent repair-item halves that time.
repair item doesn't work on loitering, nor does it work on fast travel, you have to sleep for it to work.

Don't forget you must add the line magicrepair 1 to the Z.CFG file in your Daggerfall game directory to make it work, otherwise only non-magical items will be repaired in this way.

A good way to bypass huge dungeons in this game is to find a small region with only a few moderate sized dungeons.

that isn't a bad choice, but you may want to make sure you can cast a few spells that really ease your life, particularly Open and Recall. You don't really need them at the beginning but later on.
At the beginning as soon as you are out of the first dungeon, head for a bigger city of your choice (easiest way is to stay in the province of daggerfall), like Aldingwall, Burgwall, Charing or Charton or the city of Daggerfall itself (but beware, the place is haunted. if you are outside in the night you will be attacked by King Lysandus's ghost).
Don't forget if you try to sleep inside a city you will be attacked by guards, loitering is okay though. nope, you can use any armor you like as long as you don't use a type of armor or material as disadvantage.

Also, take a look at spell absorption as advantage, it greatly makes your life easier against casters and ESPECIALLY don't forget that there is this small regulator on the top right that lets you decide how many HP you gain per level, endurance is almost worthless in that regard.

Using a high elf makes it easier as well, they are immune against paralysis by default (which is by far the most annoying thing in the game since every single caster enemy tries to stun you and usually succeeds) so you don't have to take it as advantage AND you can take a critical weakness against it as well to add points value because the racial trait overwrites any character traits. No, it's not cheating, (almost) everyone does it. The game would be pretty hard and unenjoyable without it, especially for first-time players.

Taking schools as skills doesn't mean you are not allowed to cast stuff from the other schools by the way, it just means they are cheaper to cast (higher skill = cheaper) and I think but don't quote me on it they are more likely to be successful. Also you need a high skill (around 30) to join the mages guild, which is pretty helpful.

also, check your disadvantages, take a forbidden material like mithril or adamantium (which both look cool but are very seldom and bring a lot of points in character creation), you can still use dwarven and elvish (which are most common in early-to-midgame and really carry you into the latter game) and can still use the high end stuff like daedric.

Also, play around with the stats on your left, you can easily put personality on 30 and put the points somewhere else, especially going full speed merchant is never bad. you run and attack noticably faster.

Also when you are done with all that, proceed by answering questions. when asked what you got as present or something, take the Ebony Dagger, it's the 2nd best material in the game and can save your ass a lot.

No, it just means you take a bit longer to level skills up, that's not bad at all. My last character levelled too fast, I got the hard enemies really early while my gear was still shit so I was pretty much screwed.

Also remove running from your major skills. that skill levels up literally while you run around, better put something else there. you can drop swimming, climbing and jumping as well, it literally levels up on the move as well. maybe put the other schools of magic in or a backup weapon proficiency.

I put swimming, climbing and jumping into minor skills as well and later on wondered why I did it.

Top choices. Enjoy the game.

The questions you are going to be asked next affect a few of your skills in a minor way, but as I said, make sure you pick up the ebony dagger.

There's an imp in the 2nd room (you can ignore that room though) that can only be hit by steel or better weapon so your starting iron weapon is useless.

By the time of writing that, I had found nothing but swords. Thus I had been meleeing my way around.

Also, can unarmored be a viable option? So many pretty clothes and dresses, but wearing armor on top of them ruins the look.

>> No.2147150

It's viable on top level I guess, I could go with just clothes now I think but you better have a hugh HP pool (+30 HP on lvl up is a must), but you also block yourself out of armor enchantments. Lots of them.
I kind of made a monk style guy that had plate as forbidden armor type, now I'm running around in chainmail because everyone hits me so hard and wear a shield. I'm going to enchant that shitty chainmail now I think.

Morrowind had one click to one attack thing, but how you moved your mouse before the click gave different swings.
Also in morrowind different weapons had different damages for different swings,so for example thrusting weapons, obviously, did more damage if you trusted with them.
Although in morrowind the movement based swigs felt kinda stiff and unresponsive, but there is also option for always using the optimal swing style.

think about taking up Rapid Healing and/or Regeneration if you think you heal too slowly (during sleep), one or 2 of those increase your healing rate by a large amount. "X in general" is rubbish by the way, always take "in darkness". because darkness = night, dungeons and buildings, which makes up 90% of your game while "in daylight" = outside during the day and nothing else.

Requesting clarification on some recent events:

>enter random town
>visit alchemical merchant
>shopkeeper tells me that the storeowner needs some help with a problem; he can be found at The White Ogre (a nearby tavern/inn); reward is ~270 gold
>enter The White Ogre
>talk to dude standing by the entrance
>he tells me he's my mortal enemy, shape-changes into a monster, begins to attack me
>exit the tavern & attempt to run away
>suddenly transported into a locked dungeon where the dude kills me
>reload from before talking to the dude, find out that he's pretty easy to defeat right there in the tavern/inn
>can't find the alchemical store owner who's supposed to be at The White Ogre, even though the quest is still in my log
>stay at White Ogre until the following morning, dude still isn't there
>going back to the shopkeeper who suggested the quest doesn't help
>talking to him gives a choice of Talk or Shop; when I click Talk, nothing happens
>ask other people about location of store owner; they all tell me he's at White Ogre

So was the monster dude related to the shopkeepr quest, or just a random occurrence which happened to take place in that tavern? And so how do I find the shop owner? I wasn't sure which of the following is happening:

>1. the offer of gold was a trap to lure me into the tavern so that the other dude could transform into a monster and kill me
>2. the guy's supposed to be at White Ogre and he isn't due to a glitch
>3. i need to keep waiting for him (how long?)

I think the quest bugged out. Load an older savegame maybe (ALWAYS SAVE BEFORE TAKING ON A QUEST, MAKE A SEPARATE SAVEGAME JUST FOR THAT, THE ONE IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER) I'd generally advise against doing shipkeeper/people quests right now because they don't really give you much as a reward nor important reputation. Just do Temple/Knights/Fighters/Mages Guild, they don't fuck you over that often, but if you don't want to do dungeon runs, make sure you save before taking a quest and getting a quest that suits you (like those kill-animal-in-some-house quests from the fighters guild and knights but avoid the one with the deadroth, he's fucking hard at low level)

More useful tips:

First thing you should buy is a cart, not a horse, a cart. it's almost as fast when travelling around but the important thing is it's your store. you have access to it anywhere but in dungeons but even there you can access it by clicking on the dungeon entry and saying "yes" (when you click "no" you leave the dungeon and it resets, the layout stays the same but all enemies are alive again. they are always at the same place by the way and they are always the same, so an ancient lich doesn't suddenly change into an ancient vampire etc, just saying)
and you can drop off your loot.

Another tip: play around with the equip and remove buttons in your inventory. hate it when every time you pick something up it automatically gets placed in the slot you can wear it and the item you already wear gets dropped into your inventory? use the "remove" button instead to pick it up, it then gets placed in your inventory.

Don't forget, gold actually weighs something in Daggerfall. Every 400 gold is 1kg so make an account at the bank. When you sell items the storekeepers just load you with money until your maximum encumbrance is reached, then they write you letters of credit instead. head to your local bank and deposit the letters of credit (it's an all-or-nothing option, if you use it, all letters will be turned in), deposit almost all your money (innkeeps only accept cash but just become a knight and you can sleep in any inn in your region for free) and get a new letter of credit.

If you can cast it, use "recall" in dungeons. put a recall spell up at the entrance of the dungeon (inside of course, use "anchor") and when you are full, use the "teleport" option of the recall spell to drop off your loot in your wagon (that must look pretty funny, I giggle every time I access my wagon).

Don't fail quests, rather reload the old save.
Watch time limits on quests, especially if you have to sleep often to regenerate. maybe travel recklessly to dungeons.

Daggerfall sucks.

The cities are boring and lifeless, NPC's are just walking dolls who all have the same stock lines.

There are thousands of towns, but very little reason to visit any of them. They all just have the same stores, the same temples, the same guilds, and of course lots of empty houses.

There are thousands of dungeons, but exploring them is kind of boring. The combat is clunky, the treasures are mostly just the same "you found 50 gold!" or "you found some slightly better armor!" you see in every RPG. Or, occasionally you'll find a map that leads to a "secret" dungeon that's no more awesome than the dungeon you were just in. Yippee!

Oh, and did someone say "procedural generation"?

99% of the game's towns and dungeons were computer generated. Don't even expect a professional level of quality in the game's map design, you won't find it. The only people who like Daggerfall are poorfags who can't play Morrowind and Oblivion.

If I wanted to comb randomly generated dungeons for loot, I'd play Nethack, at least Nethack has a goal to look forward to.

If I wanted to explore gloomy labyrinths in 90's 3D, I'd download one of countless fan-made levels for Doom or Quake. At least those games have decent combat.

If I wanted to "roleplay" and create a story about my character in a single player game, I'd play Fallout. At least Fallout has unique NPC's and some neat dialogue trees.

If I wanted to experience the absolute worst of these three things, I'd play Daggerfall.

do it as long as it works. Don't do it in cities though, the guard comes after the 2nd or 3rd kick. you CAN use weapons but they are very sensitive to it and lose a lot of durability doing that.

Also when you are inside buildings you can kick attack as often as you like and won't alarm the guards from it, but watch out not hitting an exit because that does alarm the guard.

kicking in magically sealed doors doesn't work by the way, you need an "Open" spell. If you don't play a magic character you may be lucky and find some random item with that enchant, it's very popular (Item of Undeniable Access), or join the temple of Julianos (if you can't manage to get to rank 3 in the mages guild to buy magic items from them), they have an item maker at rank 5 and sell items at level 3. You are able to joing Julianos's temple with a thievy character since their required skills, amongst others, are lockpicking and short blade, you need one of them at 39, the other at 13 and need to farm the reputation (30, that's theoretically 6 quests, better make that 7 because you automatically lose a point each month).

just found out that the game sometimes upgrades enemies. I went to that one dungeon with the dragonling again to train archery (dragonling wasn't there sadly, you obviously need the quest for it to show up) and when I rounded a usual corner to backstab a mage I usually expected at that place, there was a fire daedra instead and since it looked right at me, sneaking did fuckall and it almost killed me in close combat with its fireballs.

After I reset the dungeon to do it again it was back to the usual mage.

I'm experimenting with the magic item maker again, only a single "strengthens armor" works, BUT you can have multiple "weakens armor" on other items, which all get dispelled by the single "strengthens armor" enchant and completely ignored, the "strengthens armor" enchant still ehances your armor, so that's another free 700 point for enchanting except for that one single item with the + armor enchant.

okay, played around with it a bit, yes, multiple enchants seem to work (I tested it out first with enchanting sphere of negation, then sphere of negation and vampiric effect, then sphere of negation and vampiric touch, they all work together)

There is one problem though:
"On strike" enchants (this includes the separate "vampiric effect" only work when they were cast ON YOUR WEAPON. I had it on both of my bracers already and wondered if it was broken, now it's at least confirmed why it didn't work for me and makes it in the end double-worthless for me as I plan to use my hands more often when my weapon skills are up further.

Also it seems vampiric touch doesn't always work due to resistances while vampiric effect always works but I haven't checked that out completely yet.

And every rat seems to resist sphere of negation. found a rat in the giant stronghold where I tested it out and it resisted the sphere of negation while it died in one hit.

I mean, Christ, that doesn't even make sense. Why not grant fiefs or military holdings of some kind to someone at the top of a given knightly order. forgot to mention it's worth doing knights quests for the dragon slayer quest alone. you have to kill a dragonling, but the interesting part is that when you soul trap that quest mob it gives you a soul game with 5000 points and no disadvantages. also as long as you are on the quest you can kill it and reset the dungeon, then go back in and kill it again, and it's at the exact same spot so you can get a shitload of the best soul gems in the game. if you can't manage that at the first time because you are too low level or too badly equipped or soul trap is just too expensive to cast don't fear, the quest will show up later again, I had it done the second time already.

you need 70 reputation or more for the quest to be offered.

Other guilds have different skills they ask for (logically the fighters guild wants fighting skills etc), in the knights' case I still needed my 2nd required skill (archery) up.

In Morrowind because it was small and hand-built people were able to direct you to specific places; 'go up the road from X town and off to the right by the dead tree' or 'head east from the silt strider platform and look for the third valley on the left, the one with the big rock' kinda directions which would be logged in the journal.

Daggerfall, being the insanely gigantic monstrosity that it is, instead if you need directions you ask people who are wandering about and they'll either give you a compass direction or mark it on your map by name so you can go navigate to it that way. For dungeons this means using the Find function on the world map. The local map can also be annotated.

I just entered a dungeon. The entrance leads to a small raised platform in the corner of a large room, and you can't step off the platform without falling. On the platform are the following features:

>dungeon exit
>2 doors with "nothing to fear" from my character
>a 3-ft lever extending from the floor; has no effect I can find in this area
>something that looks possibly like a decorative fountain
>a door leading to a small room which leads to an even smaller room containing an imp, otherwise a dead end

So am I supposed to be able to advance here, like if I had lockpicking ability?

Version control systems are primarily used for source code management in software development. However, one can be a useful tool for any situation where you want to save snapshots of a group of files that frequently experience minor changes, such as Daggerfall's save files. There's a lot of things they can do with text files to make managing distributed source code projects easy, but you don't need to use most of the features to get the basic benefit of storing all your saves.

The specific tool I use is Mercurial. I made a repository containing the six "SAVE#" folders and all their contents, and commit its changes every time I cycle through six saves in the game. "Commit" is basically telling the repository to remember exactly how the files are at the current time, and permanently record it as a "revision" in the repository. Any revision can be restored by performing an "update" to it. Thus, you are free to overwrite your saves, delete them, start a new character, or do whatever with the knowledge that you can restore your saves to how they were at any time they've been committed to the repository. You could even use the same repository for multiple characters (or multiple versions of the same character; such as one that became a vampire, one that got cured, or one that chose different main quest options) by using "branches" to organize their own sets of revisions.

If you're comfortable with command line and your version control system of choice, you could make batch files or scripts to automate the process easily enough. Even if you don't, you could use a tool (such as TortoiseHg in Mercurial's case) to do it all through a GUI while still consuming far less time and hard drive space than you would by manually copy/pasting hundreds of copies of your save files.

Apologies for the long-winded and mostly off-topic post. Here's a sexy vampire in a cage.

you can't open doors while climbing, doesn't matter anyway, it's been the 3rd time I had to hit that dungeon and the quest target was at the exact spot again. this time, that bridge somehow ended in the air but the door on the other side was still there. skimming through daggerfall city's shops I'd wager every time you are there. you can just run through all shops, leave town (by running out, mind you) and walk back in and the shops have new wares. you need an appropiate level for mithril though (I think around 8-10 is fine)
do you need to kill a harpy or a vampire ancient or what?

Happy 1st of the Morning Star, veteran knights, rogues, and fellow questers. I am a novice who has the dosbox edition of Daggerfall patched with the official patch v. 2.13.

I downloaded the unofficial patch DFQFIX from UESP and unzipped it to the Arena2 folder in this location, which I'll call the program location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Daggerfall

Then I later noticed that another Arena2 folder resides in this location, which I'll call the AppData location:

C:\Users\Uriel Septim\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Daggerfall

And I can't find a way to test whether or not I unzipped to the right arena2 folder. I noticed that the save folders in the program location are all empty; apparently, the save-game data are all stored in the AppData location. However, the arena2 folder in the program location contains >500MB of content, while that of the AppData location contains <1MB of content, so I'm pretty sure I used the right location. Perhaps the quest data are copied into AppData location when semi-random generated in-game?

Also, I am interested in applying the Hackfall patch. Apparently, one must first install the Fallhack app and then use that app to apply the patch over DOS prompt. That does NOT mean DOSBox, right? I can just use the Windows (7) Command Prompt version of DOS for using Fallhack to apply Hackfall?

Is Hackfall worth the trouble? Would you recommend to simply apply all the unofficial patches from the UESP Daggerfall files list?

can't help you with your second question but with the first one, just rename one folder to something else and try starting the game, if it doesn't work you know you renamed the one that's used by the game, to be sure try it out with the other one as well, if you can't start either you need both.

Personally I don't have any Daggerfall related stuff in the Users-location but I used the .exe install.

But does it really matter? it's just a few MB, would have been important in 1996 but not now any more.

I feel really sorry for the orcs. I mean, hated and despised by everyone all because (at least at first) their outer appearances were changed and twisted because their god Trinimac was eaten by Boethiah and shat out. Even their reincarnated god, now called Malacath, is hated and barely acknowledged - and really, I'd say his portfolios arguably make him the most compassionate of the Daedra, being all about justice for the scorned. I mean, yeah, the kingdom of Orsinium, and likewise the Orcish people, gains the basic freedom to exist after the events of Daggerfall, but by the time Skyrim happens the Redguards and Bretons have ganged up on them again and destroyed their kingdom, again.

Someone should try to make a mod that lets you hug, or at least converse with, orcs at the very least. My last character was an orc-sympathising linguist whose main skill was Orcish. I used DFHack to bump up her Orcish to the point where I only ever had to fight, like, 5 orcs in that entire playthrough. She was basically chummy with orcs, rarely fought them, refused quests that involved killing them unprovoked or in large numbers, and was pretty quick to side with Gortwog, but, well, although enemies won't attack you if you pass a successful <language skill> check, you can't really converse with them or anything.

It would've been a lot better if you could hug the orcs or even just chat a bit with them, maybe ask them about recent news or something.

I mean, yeah, you can talk with Gortwog IIRC and he's plenty cool, but that's about it. I'd have liked to have been able to talk with regular NPC orcs, too. I really don't see how it would've been so difficult to let the player have conversations with enemies against whom they've passed a successful <language skill> check. I'd've also loved to have been able to talk with and learn more about Harpies/Nymphs/Spriggans/Giants/Centaurs/Imps (what are the Imps anyway? Daedra? Magical constructs?)

Haha haven't needed any yet, just 1 potion of orc strength, 1 potion cure disease, 1 potion of waterwalking. I might try orc strength w/ bow to maybe kill the first one before getting in range of his paralysis attack, then i might have a chance of getting the second. but i think i'll just backtrack from the earlier save-game. i was just annoyed because in those 20-30 minutes i was navigating painstakingly with the quick-map to find unexplored regions.

No problem. Version control is a lot easier to learn than it may seem at first glance. For a simple tutorial on the basics of version control and Mercurial specifically, see: http://hginit.com/01.html
You don't have to familiarize yourself with the specific commands if you don't want to, as the third party shell extensions (with names that start with Tortoise) available for every major version control system make it easy to create and manage repositories through Explorer menus and graphical front ends.

It is possible to perform it manually with a hex editor if your saves are not properly configured for the tool to automatically increase detail. The easily-translatable French instructions are found here: http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/index.php/Daggerfall_:_Améliorer_la_distance_de_vue#M.C3.A9thode_manuelle

I was forced to use this method for my saves a long time ago and was successful. I don't remember the exact values I found in my SAVETREE.DAT, but it was a little less than 7F in my case. Just set all three slider settings as high as you can with your mouse, then save. Make a backup of your save, then poke around for values somewhere between 7C-7F in the pattern described by the instructions. If you aren't successful and don't mind sharing the saves you want to modify, you could upload them somewhere and I will try it for you.

Once finished, be sure to never accidentally touch the Detail slider again before saving, lest you either repeat the process for your new save, go back to your previous save and lose some progress, or live with the low view distance from then on. At least it will be a lot easier to notice that you touched it when the huge bar disappears.

It's brown colored; the same as residences, houses for sale, and empty buildings. It's always labeled "Thieves Guild".

It's automatically marked whenever you enter a town. It's possible that it won't be marked for areas that you already visited prior to completing the initiation. You can't ask around for it, so in that case you need to explore a bit using the "Info" interaction on suspected buildings. UESP has a complete list of towns that contain Thieves Guilds (or any other specific building) in each region if you want to test it without any doubt.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Places#Places_of_Interest (Click the region name of your choice on the leftmost column of the table.)

If all else fails, make absolutely sure you're still in the guild, as none of this would work otherwise: Click "Affiliations" on your character sheet and verify that "The Thieves Guild" is listed. You may have been kicked out if you lost reputation with them, which is very possible through various non-guild quests.

As you can see on the "Daggerfall" region page, a few examples of towns that contain Thieves Guilds in the Daggerfall region are:
Aldfort Hill
Charway
Daggerfall
Gothpath
Longtry Field
Oxway
Stokworth
Whitewich

It is tricky but possible to climb down, actually. It depends a bit on (real life and in-game) luck, your climbing skill, and most importantly your aim. You need perfect aim; you must be parallel to the wall. Run into it at full force and hold on for your life. You can grab walls even if you're falling. Then release the movement key to fall, and press it again to attempt to regain your footing. Continue to throttle the movement key until you have successfully climbed down the wall.

Good luck, and keep on reppin' the stealthyfolk. Nearly any play-style is viable in this game if you're creative. Though you will almost certainly eventually need some Free Action potions for high level monsters; they're not too hard to find anywhere that sells potions.

Quest was broken (kind of all the quest from that "CompUSA" patch are broken for me), I turned the ivory in and got the well done message and everything but the enemies still respawned constantly, loaded, got the quest again (this time had to steal it from the dark brotherhood, jeez) and monsters enemies respawned in the Dark Brotherhood house, the ivory was there again even though I turned it in. When I killed any enemies I got the message that I fucked up the quest (you haven't actually fucked up yet, it just means you need to leave town and turn it in somewhere else), when I picked up the ivory, it said I had to turn it in again.
Those broken quests are easily recognizable by the way, one of the placeholders in the quest text in your journal is called "BLANK". If you see that, load an older savegame right away and spare yourself the headache.

>> No.2160934

>>2160915

Not that anon but yeah, all the quests that I definitely know were added by the CompUSA patch seem to either break the game, have a high chance of breaking the game, or just don't really work properly.

For example, there's this one CompUSA quest, a barkeep/merchant quest, where the questgiver asks you to help protect him from vampires who are coming to his house that night. Some time between (IIRC) 00:00 and 05:00, two vampires appear in his residence (in which he's already appeared, and was in the attic all the times I tried this quest), and you have to fight them (assuming they appear; a few times they just plain never showed up, and as a result I failed the quest). After you defeat both of them and talk to the questgiver, he gives you some gold as a reward.

Consistently, without fail, every single time I have attempted the quest, the game immediately crashes when you leave the house after getting the quest reward. Every single time. It doesn't matter how you leave, either: walk out the front door, set an anchor in another bulding and teleport there, teleport outside, use console to go to another area, whatever, if you have received the reward for the quest, the game will CTD the moment you leave that house, every time, no matter what.
