Basically any Nintendo D-pad. They're all good, even the tiny little one on the Gamecube, while not feeling great, works great.

Never liked the circular D-pads from SEGA. Always found them way too easy to rock it and accidentally do a diagonal input.

Fuck anything not Sega and the lack of a middle pivot point, Sega's plate pads not only gave you a better ability to pull anything you need in a fighting game with ease but gave you better diagonals.

I still LOVE model 1 Genesis pad though, aesthetically it looks great and I still use it to play simple games like Sonic, etc. But if it's a fighter, model 2.

I know a lot of people will disagree but I think the PSP 3000 has the best D-Pad, followed closely by the Vita 1000. They both feel extremely responsive but the PSP 3000 has the tiniest bit of mushiness to it which, along with the flat smooth texture, makes it feel absolutely fantastic. The Vita doesn't have any of the mushiness and all of the physical buttons could be a bit bigger, but it still feels good.

I had never had the pleasure of playing saturn until a month ago or so at a retro fair. The pad was good but no better than the mega drive one. I expected clicky shoulder buttons (a la 360) but most seemed to not give good enough feedback. Is that right or I just came across really torn out controllers? I thought it was a good controller but I was expecting something legendary. Anyway I played in not very long bursts so I may have not unleashed its true power. I got the opportunity to use a Saturn 3d pad as well and that actually felt legendary. I wish the DC controller was as good as the SAT3D.

I also destroyed my fingers on the dualshock 1 when kid and I think it has a very serviceable dpad.

I think any Sega or Nintendo d-pad beats most of the Playstation ones, I stimply dislike the way it's divided, and I feel all the dualshock d-pads uncomfortable. But the PSP 3000 has indeed the best playstation d-pad I've tried. I still prefer a Saturn, Genesis model 2 or SNES one, but PSP 3000 is alright.

I can comfirm the model 2 Saturn controllers' L and R buttons make a click sound when they're pressed, not sure on the model 1 american ones.

And yeah, Saturn's d-pad is based on the Genesis one, but it's a bit bigger and overall feels like they perfected the design, which was already good.

The diagonals aren't perfect. I replayed SotN the other day on it and going back and forth between it, a PS1 pad, and my CC Pro I ran into some trouble pulling off a lot of the spell motions because the DS4 was too sensitive.

It's an incredible multi-purpose pad but it lacks precision.

top lel. I've been gaming since 1990 across multiple systems my whole life you silly fruitcakes. That's before you were born kek. I have no qualms in calling the PS2 and PS3 DPads shitty (and the controllers pretty shitty overall, too). I have no problem with saying that the 360 controller is still the most comfortable one ever made. I have no problems with saying that the PS4 is a pretty lame system right now if you have a good PC as it has no must own exclusives (and most modern games suck balls anyway). I'm just calling it like it is. DS4 has the best DPad I have ever used hands down.

I really like the feel of the PS non dual shock d-pad because of its really short throw and high resistance for very precise input. That is my choice for fighting games and platform games.

This so very much. Double tapping, quarter/half/full-circles, shouryuken; the smooth transition and clicky feedback makes it easy to do any type of command without the use of excessive force.
The buttons and D-Pad are perfect (the feel reminds me of old Nokia phones), but holding the console itself with even slightly larger hands (especially if you have to use L/R) gets eventually uncomfortable.

Chances are you got a shitty Genesis controller. I have 2 shitty ones and 1 good one, and they look totally identical. I'm pretty sure they both come from Sega, too. Main difference is the D-pad on the good one is super responsive and clicky, whereas the other ones are extremely stiff.
The saturn pad feels similar to the good one, except the surface of the pad has a really nice rubber-y texture.

The 3ds one slides around and the SNK one rolls on a pivot like most 3D sticks. The difference is the SNK is a micro switch d-pad so it makes little clicks when you move it. I've never used one but I've fixed a few for friends but it feels cool in your hands
