Are there any fan levels that feels like hubs for Hexen? What are some of the best ones?

>> No.2132864

Yes. The best ones are the ones of the highest quality.

>> No.2133319

Shadows of Cronos just came out this year and it's fucking great.

>> No.2133354

Since this is a Hexen thread, I feel like this is the best place to ask:
I've never played Hexen but the visuals seem appealing and interesting to me. I also want to expand my N64 collection, so:
Is the N64 port any good? I heard it was pretty bad but I don't trust the reviews saying this.

>> No.2133370

>>2133354

the n64 port is my personal favorite. the chaos serpent/axe door glitch is corrected among other things. the atmosphere is excellent, as is the music - although it kind of drones too much imo.

the n64 version also has storytelling captions at the start of each level which is cool.

>>2133354
N64 is great. It was panned for the crime of being a port of a 3 year old game. It looks better than the dos version did, and the controls are great.

I only played the N64 port and it's great, specially the music which differs from the dos one greatly. But I'm still willing to play the dos version because of its expansion, Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. What do you guys think of it?

Also, to aid you >>2132818 and anyone else interested, here is a pastebin that should accompany every Hexen/Heretic thread: http://pastebin.com/R6akNhcJ

It explains how to play the Heretic and Hexen (dos version) on your computer, how to have multiplayer on them, where to download the games WAD's and lastly, it lists a few mods for both games. I suppose the mods are the ones people here considered to be the best/decent ones, but I'm not sure.

>>2133479
The controls, I feel, were truly well ported. For a game that was originally played on computer with a mouse, you don't feel limited regarding movement and camera. Perhaps because this game didn't required mouse precision that much, the simple up/down of the N64 was more than enough.

>Is the N64 port any good
-Good controllers, its playable[only downside is that it didn't pulled a Doom64 by allowing your to map any button]
-Visuals, maps and anything are as good as the original and nothing was cut, the music is debatible because its all orchestated[nothing bad but i prefer the original MIDIs]
-4 PLAYERS COOP AND DEATHMATCH (but at the cost of graphical quality)
-Level start captions and the 4th hub's axe door room got fixed and the water in Guardian of Ice when you pick the fire key freezes like in the original[after a short period]

That sounds good. It's a sad thing that you can't really trust most people regarding this sort of thing. Same with Castlevania 64, I alway heard nothing but bad things about it and ended up loving it.

I'd say Deathkings is better than the base game by a decent margin, the levels and hubs are just superb. Problem is it features literally no new enemies, bosses, weapons, classes, items, or even keys/puzzle items for fuck's sake.

it doesn't even feature music either... and i don't even mean new music, the unpatched 1.0 version has zero bgm of any sort

i prefer ambient sounds over music in lots of games but in doomlikes it feels not only cheap but WRONG

Going from the PC version of Hexen to the N64 version was painful for me. The whole thing just felt off, with terrible controls on top of it.

Play it on a sourceport player if you get the chance.

Made them when I was bored and was inspired by all the Doomguy image macros.

I couldn't find too many black sprite templates for Hexen, so I made do.

I just started playing this and seeing all the levels named after the Titans and such (ie Garden of Gaea) reminds me how much I hate that the world of Hexen is called Cronos. It's just so lazy and unimaginative, much like Hexen 2's hubs being based on real world civilizations.

Heretic andd Hexen 2 had nice fantasy names, Parthoris an Thyrion, but Cronos is just lame.

I agree.

I played Mage and Cleric. Finally got around to play the fighter and the careful melee approach, plus the speed, made the combat a lot more fun. At first, I thought that the combat was just an afterthought and it was mostly a puzzle/switch hunt game.

I'm running GZDoom with the "Software" sector light mode which emulates the original Doom engine's lighting and makes darkened areas look darker as they're farther away. I'm playing with a gameplay mod called Wrath of Cronos which uses some version of the NC HUD. Also, that was taken from a level from Tower of Chaos, you won't find that custom enemy in vanilla.
