ITT: Retro games with artificial difficulty

>Need Ink Ribbons to save
>Extremely limited ammo
>Can only hold a few items at a time

>> No.2132489

It wouldn't be survival horror if it wasn't hard to survive. If anything, I would call the controls the artificial difficulty.

>1-2 hits can kill you
>bumping into harmless animals like turtles counts as a hit
>falling in water kills you instantly EVEN THOUGH you can swim in certain levels
>limited lives
>no save points

It's basically unwinnable without using emulator save states, shame on Nintendo for releasing a barely-playable, unfinished game

You should learn what artificial difficulty is.

The only thing you could argue there that is actual artificial difficulty is the ink ribbons.

>> No.2132495

What makes it "artificial difficulty"? Considering the genre of the game, they seem like perfectly legitimate ways to increase challenge.

That shit pisses me off so much. I gave up on Jak and Daxter because of it.

>What makes it "artificial difficulty"?
You need ammo to kill enemies, if you can't kill them then you can't progress. If you die without saving, you'll lose progress. And having to walk to the chest to deposit items adds artificial length to the game.

You are supposed to avoid enemies in resident evil you fucking mongoloid

The only time you need to kill anything to progress is during boss fights

You can't avoid zombies when the corridor is the same width as them. You would just get grabbed.

Not sure what the value assessment here is, by labeling this as "artificial difficulty". Are these things supposed to be "bad"? If so, why? Scarce resources is basically the crux that made the old Resident Evil games enjoyable. Coupled with the dreadful atmosphere, it made the games pretty thrilling (at least the first time through).

>> No.2132545

the PS RE series is probably some of the most fun I have ever had growing up. It requires memorization in a good way and has very small amounts of insta deaths and instead has many scenarios that require skill.

You picked the wrong game to troll us with op

there used to be a whole volume of what "artificial difficulty" means over on /v/. It really has no place here because many of the descriptions can fit older games even though its not the same comparison.

>invisible insta-death traps
>you need 10000 xp to level up, bad guys give you 1xp
>enemies get more health and you get less ammo on hard
>simon says boss battles
ETC.

Alot of older games had these due to programming limitations of the time but still amounted to a fun game. Nowadays its considered a sign of developer lazyness.

Its just another excuse to not have fun if you ask me.

It's an interesting theory.. maybe the ultimate consequence of "artificial difficulty" being "unenjoyability"? Then I guess you could argue where a game loses its enjoyability is its use of artificial difficulty, and where its enjoyability flourishes would be any instances of "legitimate" difficulty. Like you said though, (at first hand at least) it seems shaky when trying to use the term all across the board.
