Though playing it recently reminded me how touchy the controls are (although that could be because the emulator is emulating it at a smoother frame rate and the physics are tied to the frame rate).

The frame rate on that is abysmal, probably about 10fps. Fun game, though. Star Fox has a similar aesthetic, it also runs very slow, but it feels ok for some reason.

K. Yoshimura's PC games are good sources of this. Plazma Line from 1984 (>>2131010) and Star Cruiser from 1988/89 are impressive for the computers they ran on, in addition to playing well compared with games of their era. Might as well mention that Silpheed was a competing polygon shooter from 1986.

Yeah the saturn version is good, arrange music and some new tracks/cars different from the 32x.

Also the Sega Ages vol.8 version is very good, higher resolution than arcade new tracks and cars different from the 32x version.

I wonder if the SEGA AGES version of Virtua Racing is based off the source code or if it's a by-eye recreation. Being able to add three new tracks (including Beltway, a personal favorite) is a big endeavor, and M2 wasn't even working on the series at that point.

Don't know about PCB rarity, but I wouldn't be surprised. It was the main influence behind Thexder, Game Arts' 1985 side-scrolling adventure run 'n' gun for Japanese computers. No, you really can't. Sure you just need stock hardware, but the cartridge itself has extra hardware in it, much like many SNES games of the time, so it is not indicative of the power of the stock Genesis.
