This is Aquaparke, a really gorgeous level for Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 that was released in 07, long after most people had moved on from JK. Some interesting texture and "cog" (JK script) tricks were used, and the level design itself is excellent and plays great with a group of people.

I'd post screenshots, but the links on Massassi aren't working and I don't wanna just post the thumbnails.

I asked this in the Favorite RTS thread, but maybe someone here would know.

I'm trying to set up a USB drive of my father's favorite retro computer games (and some other nostalgic stuff we used to play together), and I need some guidance with Command and Conquer Red Alert.

RTS games aren't really my thing, and I've been looking all over the place. I want to get a portable installation going with support for high resolutions and all the expansion packs and single player missions. Online play doesn't really matter, I doubt my Dad would care or have the time to git gud enough to enjoy it.

So far my options seem to be Iran's Portable RA (http://iran.cnc-comm.com/ra/)), which seems to be a straight bug fix, content restoration, and high res pack; OpenRA (http://www.openra.net/)) which seems to be more about adding modern features and usability to the game, but focuses on online and rebalancing, which kind of rubs me the wrong way; or Nyergud's 1.06c patch, which seems to be the same thing as Portable RA?

All things considered PortableRA seems like the way to go. Anyone have any notes or tips, shit I should consider?

I've already got Chex Quest set up. Used to take turns on that all the time.

well, same bitrate (bits per second) with more frames per second, you get less bits per frame, i.e. looks more potato

similar with resolution being only a factor of quality, not filesize - the higher the resolution, the less bits per pixel (and more potato)

it's really simple equations

It's so sad that there seems to be people, modders even who think that in order to proof that something is high definition, you have to color every pixel with different shade, resulting in the ugliest grain effect possible.

Those people are in the highest positions in game development, bruh. One of the key aesthetic failures last gen (and not apparently changing this gen) is the insistence that detail be high-frequency absolutely everywhere, merely because it's technically possible. No subtlety or restraint.

I think it's the dynamic, atmospheric lighting above all. Many engines at the time still ran on static lighting and SS2 looks amazing in comparison because the lighting still works fine when you implement higher res textures or even models.

In games like silent hill, a rustic engine works quite well, with the models shifting sligthly when they move and stuff like that, It shouldn't be that hard to make something that imitates it.
Think about it: The human mind searches for equivalent detail, but having a 2048X1024 texture on a featureless wall will make someone uneasy, not unlike the hollow face illusion.
Thinking about it, is there any game with a hollow face illusion?

Eh, it's alright but to be honest I think I like the original graphics better. Just gives a better atmosphere imo. I'd love to play doom with 3d models but they always look cheesy as hell, I'm thinking this might be a limitation of the actual mechanics, the way the monsters move just looks ridiculous when you put it into 3d.

It /is/ Doom.

>Through I admit the same textures are a bit overused in OP's pictures : it looks like he has only one textures for the walls.

It is one texture for the walls. That's how Doom is. One texture per wall segment.

>> No.2183915

>>2183903
Well it doesn't work for HD. If OP is going to take liberty with the original textures, he may also add new ones.

>> No.2183926

>>2183915

I think that was everyone's main criticism. Especially when combined with the simple, angular geometry, it does look like Minecraft with an HD texture pack. At least with Minecraft you aren't necessarily constrained to only using the same texture on any given wall.

I should clarify that Doom can have 2 textures on a wall vertically and/or a large number segmented horizontally, but the basic levels don't make much use of such abilities.

>> No.2184031

>>2183926
I was under the impression that most criticisms were about how it wasn't the same textures, rather than how repetitive it is.

>> No.2184075

>>2184031

It's repetitive and is so much higher detail than the geometry. It... doesn't look very good IMO. "Looking like Minecraft with HD textures" is not a compliment. Some people like it, but it's jarring and not very fitting.

I bet it looks a lot better in-game in motion, though, as things usually do.

>> No.2184085

>>2184075
It wasn't intended as a compliment.
