to be fair, Gundam was unknown in america at the time and "anime" still wasn't mainstream. I don't blame them for this "localization" no matter how bad it is. Because I'm sure if they left it as is and did a simple localization, chances are it would have sold worse.

A quick list from tv tropes:

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
Shantae
Sigma Star Saga
One Must Fall 2097 (to a degree)
OpenArena (to a degree)
Shadow Warrior (at least a couple of characters; Lina and Sailor Moon cameo)

I wish there were more. There's a certain charm in seeing executives misunderstanding anime and trying to make everything kawaii uguu to market to the kiddies, or anime fans in the development team sneaking stuff in. Same thing when Japanese developers put random Western stuff in. Culture clash is fun.

Unfortunately, by the time anime was picking up enough steam for western companies to ape its style, it was well past 1999.

For example Tsunami 2265 fits the bill for this thread, but came out in 2002. So it's not retro (also it's unbelievably shitty).

Seems like a worthless statement from people thinking that other animation is always for children.
The main difference between anime and other cartoons is the scale. Disregarding outsourcing Japan produces like ten times as much animation as the rest of the world combined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think OP's image is based off an animu?

Though you're right that anime isn't an art style. There are some traits common in a lot of anime, but Dragon Ball and Hello Kitty's art styles are worlds apart. Doesn't mean Western developers can't take inspiration from some aesthetics and ideas common across a few different animes, but anime isn't an art style, or a style of storytelling, or anything.

The CD-i / PC games Chaos Control and Solar Crusade had anime-esque cutscenes.

Also Zone 66 and perhaps some of the Turrican games.
