What is the best version of RE3? There was a chart detailing the differences between the various ports of RE2 but to my knowledge one doesn't exist for RE3.

Also, am I crazy or does the Dreamcast have slightly more detailed backgrounds here, despite having some sort of sharpness filter applied? Look at the car outside the window for example.

I've tried 3 versions of RE3.

>Playstation

Original. 240p backgrounds.

>PC

There's issues with the 3D. It's the same issues when you upscale in a Playstation emualtor. These issues were fixed in the RE2 PC port, but apparently not in the RE3 port. Very disapointing.

>Gamecube

The 3D issues I've mentioned were fixed.

The Dreamcast versions of RE2 and RE3 are widely considered the best versions available.

Not so much Code Veronica, but that's a given.

maybe the PC screenshot is from 16-bit color mode, while the dreamcast shot is from the dreamcast's 24-bit color mode?

I remember emulating the PS version of RE3 and the music was plucky, I downloaded the PSF from emuparadise and it sounded sequenced, deterministic in comparison to the other versions. I don't know about the technicalities.
I extracted the PC version music and it sounded more fluent, but not as clear as the PS1's. It was 22050hz WAV whereas the Dreamcast's were in 44100hz in compressed ADX.

I fail to understand why anyone would need a perfectly rendered version of a game where the characters are 8 rectangles with textures and mouths that don't even open and close.

It just seems pointless.

Ask and you shall receive.

Gamecube version is the only one that has z-buffering (models don't jiggle like a PSX game).

In terms of gameplay, the PC versions are probably the smoothest (no loading times at all during camera angles, you have the possibility to skip doors).
Also you can choose the pad you want, the Dreamcast and Gamecube pads are awful for tank controls, honestly I even bought an adaptor to use a PS2 pad on my GC to play REmake and RE0 and it made the games a lot EASIER and made me realize the controls are some of the best in the series in REmake and 0 actually, that's how bad the GC pad is for these games.

I remember RE3 PC having loading times between screens. I was rather disapointed with it.

Code Veronica X had a Dreamcast version that only came out in Japan. I never cared much for the extra cutscenes added in the X version anyway. They feel pretty shoehorned in, especially the one where Claire meets Wesker just before Chris arrives into Rockfort.

Also remember that while the Sourcenext PC versions of 2 and 3 are the best looking of all, they are Biohazard and Biohazards have easier difficulty than Resident Evil. For me that's a HUGE minus, especially for RE3 which is already too easy to begin with and will forever lack a real hard mode.

>>2128694
Well I think either you had a really shitty computer or you didn't install the game entirely and used the CD; even on my old computers I had no loading times.

No they don't. Biohazard (japanese RE2) has both new game and arrange game submenus respectively. "new game" offers rookie and normal difficulties which are japanese easier difficulties compared to respective western ones. But under "arrange" submenu you got original western difficulties rookie, normal and hard (aka nightmare mode from Dreamcast and original PC).

Since this is the defecto RE thread, I'm trying to emulate 2 with Project 64, but having some issues. None of the characters are showing up in gameplay, nor are the monsters. According to the compatibility FAQ RE 2 should run OK, but the issues the game does have don't match up with what I'm encountering. Anybody got any suggestions?

I used to play N64 RE2 in an emulator because I didn't know the PC version existed. I played with a keyboard for a long time, then finally bought a controller. RE2 was the only game that didn't feel better with a controller in hand.

Does RE1 PC work on modern PCs? I seem to remember that there's some weird bullshit with the PC version, but I don't recall if anybody ever fixed it or found a workaround.

>> No.2130098

From what I understand, N64 RE2 is impossible. I've never gotten it to work properly on any combination of emulators and plugins.

>> No.2130683

>>2130092
It depends on your PC and OS. Really, it's all luck. On my old dual core under XP the game would run at 150% speed; and then I remember trying on another computer with vista IIRC and everything played fine at the right speed (remember to play in compatibility mode). Haven't tried with 7.
Also I'm 90% sure that the PC version of RE1 has Biohazard-level difficulty, which is easier than the regular western console RE releases. Then again it's been a long time so I'm not certain; plus versions of RE1 are a mess and difficulty differ not only between release but also between region. For a long time I've been willing to do a torough testing of every version and create a chart to tell which versions from which region have which difficulty but I don't have time (I work 50hours a week)....

>>2130098
I got it to "work" once. And then the game crashed in the lab at the end, and always crashed at the same point.
I never got to play the item randomizer mode (which is the only reason to play the N64 version really).... Nobody seems to have a save with that unlocked for emulation, either.
