I'm trying to get my sort of casual friend into retro games. What are some /vr/-approved games that are almost impossible to not enjoy? Bonus points for co-op.

Pic maybe related?

Goof Troop and Sunset Riders are THE co-op games

SNES Smash TV is a challenge, but it's hard to top it for co-op.

TMNT Turtles in Time, Contra 3, Wild Guns should all be a lot of fun.

Metal Slug, Kirby Super Star, Contra, Super Mario World/All Start(you can swap off and stuff) as well as DKC1/2.

Any particular genres he likes?

That awkward moment when he runs out of continues before you die once

When you take first and he's struggling with toad for last place

When he shoots the potion and/or food

When his turn lasts for nine seconds and yours goes for fifteen minutes

That's why you stick to Kirby instead of these other suggestions

Maybe try Secret of Mana if you've got real time to kill. Or else play an adventure game (that you don't know inside and out) and take turns driving.

The point of retro gaming is challenge. What else is there to enjoy but overcoming the odds? Is crappy lowres pixel art and shitty synth music what actually constitutes retro for you? You mights as well go beat Resident Svil 6 on easy instead.

Get him to play various good, flashy, stylish MAME-emulatable arcade games. Tell him to limit coins and play new games instead of replaying the same ones. Play D&D SoM and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs et al. If he doesn't want it, let him be.

Unless he's played newer Pokemon games, then he'll see how flawed and shallow the older games are.

This.

Also:

Metal Slug
King of Fighters or Street Fighter
SMB 3 or SMW
Any Sonic game on Genesis
Duke Nukem 3D/Quake/Doom Deathmatches are always fun

Mr. Gimmick, since so many casual games are physics based nowadays.

FFIV might be worth a mention. Also probably Crash (2 or Warped) and Spyro.

>> No.2129379

No no no, we have it all wrong. First OP's pic is worth a mention.

But then you see, casual games are mostly puzzles. So something like Fire and Ice or Lolo would fit the bill. Puyo Puyo or Tetris Attack too.

Sonic appeals to infinite runners for obvious reasons, probably Crash too.

And DOA - the scrubbiest fighting game ever. ANYONE can win, it's great.
