This isn't really a gaming PC but I would kill to have something like it. It looks hilarious but the guys who made it claim that a modern PC would be too hot for this kind of build. I wonder if my late 1999 Slot A Athlon build would be okay under a lump of foam.

i still have another compro PII 300Mhz, but never did anything with it. it's suprisingly still working despite having corroded parts everywhere. it has only PCI slots, so it's fairly useless for gaming anyway.

For endusers nothing really. You got worse performance and it wasn't till 98 till Windows gaming was decent enough and DirectX wasn't 100% dogshit. But 9x kernel was as stable as house of cards.

>> No.2128485

>>2125716
Win98 was the best 9x OS, but it sucks. It is unusably bad. It does run on dos though, so you have real dos for legacy applications. It is probably the best option.

Win2k is nt codebase, which is dos-less. It is more stable, but dos is emulated so things may not work right. Lots of games fall into the don't work right category.

Win95 and winme are useless. Avoid them.

shit. how does that even work? i remembered after creative bought out adlib, they were still making cheapass 8-bit soundblaster boards. why would anyone want a soundblaster clone?

>> No.2128606

>>2128532
Because a real ISA sound blaster card doesn't fit in a laptop. This machine uses a couple chips on the motherboard (I.e. integrated sound). AFAIK Creative didn't sell their DSPs standalone, so laptop manufacturers had to use clones. This particular one was made by a random 3rd party and required a compatibility layer to "emulate" the Sound Blaster registers. This is super fragile and hangs the machine whenever you try to switch from real mode to protected mode, for reasons I have not examined.

This machine was made around '99, so clearly the hw manufacturer didn't need to give a flying fuck about providing 100% DOS compatibility.

I have a collection of IBM compatible computer hardware that needs to go ASAP. Everything from 486 to Pentium III and 4. Mostly Pentium and Pentium II boxes from the mid late-90s. Tons of other assorted hardware like 10/100 NICs, ancient 2/4/8 MB video cards, fax modems, SCSI interfaces, and maybe a few pieces of more unique stuff mixed in.

Can anyone here use any of this? Know someone who can? Not really looking to make money (although I'm also not looking to LOSE money on transporting heavy equipment a long distance), just hoping to save as much of this history from being shredded for scrap metal as possible (which is what's going to happen to 90% of whatever I can't get save first).

The stash is located in northern Virginia, USA, but even if you aren't local, let me know any ideas you have about someone who might be able to take this stuff and use it for more than just salvage!

Problem is the damn geforce won't let me set custom refresh rates. Everytime I try to add a custom resolution it just tells me "The custom resolution cannot be added".
This happens no matter what resolution/refresh rate I try to add.
I know the one I'm trying to add works (640x480@120hz) since the Voodoo 2 cards handle it just fine.
Any way to force a custom refresh rate on the Geforce without fucking up the Voodoo cards? I know there's plenty of stand-alone utilities for this but most of them are XP-only and the ones that aren't don't work with GF4.

generic drivers with win98 maybe? if you can fit a retro-era voodoo card into it, it could still work. not sure about audio.

biggest problems would be having too much RAM to win98(more 1GB RAM locks it up i think), and being unable to detect larger HDDs.

winxp with P4 is really better for emulation i guess. most emulators don't use more than 1 core AFAIK.

Yeah, 2000/XP are very similar, so using 2000 grants you zero advantages over XP with regards to application compatibility. However, 2000 is more "retro" and it may run better than XP without tweaks on older hardware like my Pentium II laptop. There are some XP/2000 games that won't run on Vista/7/8 but they are fairly rare. Most 32-bit /vr/ Windows games will still work on 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8. Even 16-bit Windows 3.x games still run on 32-bit Windows 8.1. The main reason for using 95/98 as a retro gaming machine is for playing DOS games alongside Windows games. 98 is generally the best for this purpose. If you really want a compability challenge try Windows NT 4. I even got some Unreal Engine games to run on NT 3.51 (but in a VM).

That literally makes no sense. Basic components these days are *way* more energy efficient than hardware back then and therefore would shit out a lot more heat. Don't overclock and don't put in a massive heat generating dedicated GPU and you'd be fine. Lots and lots of fanless builds out there if you're interested in that stuff for HTPCs and shit.

That thing probably has a fan on it, anyways. Old HDDs can overheat pretty easily on their own, unlike SSDs.

Well you have a dual processor. The performance in DOS games might be less than a regular Pentium 200 because the Pros weren't optimized well for 16-bit. Windows NT or Linux is the desirable OS for a Pentium Pro. You should try Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 and see if you get acceptable performance. Most /vr/ games don't use multiple processors but I believe the Quake 3 and Unreal engines support SMP. You should try to find out which games support it and tell us what you discover. Dual Pentium Pro 200s may be good enough for Quake 3/Unreal Tournament.

Not sure if this is the thread for this, but I have a Windows rig and a Linux rig (Ubuntu GNOME edition). My question is, what do you guys use for an N64 emulator? All my other emulators work fine, but using Mupen64Plus with M64py frontend and the built in SDL plugin isn't working at all. For starters, setting the analogs in config is impossible because the deadzone is literally pinprick size. And besides that, the config always seems to reset to some default WADS nonsense anyway.
