What are some /vr/ Japanese adventure games? I mean Snatcher type adventure, not Zelda adventure. The only others I can think of are Policenauts and Shadow of Memories (Shadow of Destiny) in the US. Also I don't mean long visual novels without much interaction.

Shadows of Destiny is very much NOT /vr/

Sad to say it because I love the game to bits, but take it to /v/ I'm sure you'll get lots of intelligent discussion there about the homunculus waifu and sjw aspects of time travel

Aconcagua for PSX
Shenmue 1 and 2 for DC
D2 for DC

do they have to be japanese? Japs tend bend it towards terror. But you should check Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island 1 and 2.

And Larry 6 too. Not very japanese, but the pace and lack of action are there.

I'm playing one of the J.B. Harold mysteries, called Murder Club. They're Japanese PC detective command-selection adventures, and this installment has excellent writing for 1986. You can also get the sequel, Manhattan Requiem, on the Apple App Store since there's an English-translated remake.

Shadowrun for the SegaCD? I mean there are a lot of games that take a lot of inspiration from the classic "Adventure Game" genre, to varying degrees of differentiation (to the point where a lot of people wouldn't even call them adventure games anymore).

I'm partial to Yumimi Mix and Dinosaur Island, though they're closer to animated VNs (a genre which itself I would still consider part of the adventure game genre, even though I know some would disagree).

If you're not counting dating sims and kinetic visual novels, besides Japanese PCs your best bet is Nintendo consoles. DS library has around 50 games like that, half of which are translated, it's not retro but for this genre it really doesn't matter. The console library which is probably rivals that amount is the Famicom's, not sure how much is total, but you can find 10-15 fan translated roms.

You'll get jack shit. I make a thread about Shadow of Destiny once a month and I get 3 replies on average. Also Homunculus is a guy (he states so in one of the cutscenes).

Hands down the best story in video games for me. It's ridiculous how underrated the game is, given that it's made by Konami team silent dudes and has shitton of endings.

Avoid PSP version like a plague.

Famicom Detective Club part 2 is where it's at dude.

(No need to play part 1, as part 2 acts as a prequel)

Thanks for the suggestions. I've played them all other than Aconcagua as I don't know Japanese.

Yumimi Mix looks pretty cool but I only just started learning Japanese.

Thanks for the link.

I agree. It's a great game with lots of depth and replay value. Too bad it didn't get massively successful and we'd have a ton of jagged polygon model adventures to play through.

I like visual novels, but the experience is usually more like reading a book than actually playing a game.

Psy-O-Blade for the Megadrive (originally released for PC88, MSX etc) has been translated. The patch is in beta so best to wait, but worth keeping an eye out
