Seriously, how good is this game? I see it being consistently ranked high on GOAT snes games lists. Is it on par with the Super Mario World games?

>> No.2122162

Really good. I think it's as good as Mario World, but they're two totally different genres so it's hard to really compare.

+Great music
+Great graphics
+Great localization
+Good pacing, not too long or too short

-Some people don't like the isometric viewpoint
-Battles get repetitive
-Very simple

It's main problem is that it's too easy.

I played it the first time around with a 2x enemy health and attack patch and it was a good difficulty.

I recommend you do the same, it's a simple google search for the "Hard Mode patch".

>> No.2122185

Pretty over-rated. The graphics and music are really good, but the novelty of seeing mario in an RPG wears off pretty fast. About as fast as the zones stop resembling something from Mario, actually.

I can honestly give two shits about Mario RPG now.....

It's a very fun game, and arguably better than SMW - different genres of course, but as easy as SMRPG was, its game balance wasn't quite as broken as SMW's spin jump + cape. At least you had to put effort into getting the most hax equipment.

It's worse. It's real-world shopped.

>> No.2122986

>arguably better than SMW
Absolutely not. It's very good for a JRPG, but it can't seriously compare to real video games with actual gameplay.

>> No.2123075

>>2122986
Are you saying RPGs have no actual gameplay?
If you are I would argue that all the Mario RPGs are more interactive than other turne based RPGs like pokemon and final fantasy.
But that's just one anons opinion

>> No.2123083

>>2123075
I can see where the other anon is coming from. i enjoy RPGs also but I do agree that they are able to be played in a very passive fasion unlike, say, platformers.
However, OP, I wouldn't really compare the two because theyre not similar outside of sharing Nintendo IPs. Why don't you just grab a ROM and try it out?

Why are you even comparing different genres?

>> No.2123106

Its not 'on par' with super mario world. It's pointless to compare games of different genres.

As for how it compares to other jrpgs. Its not exactly a great game, almost no customization or strategy even by jrpg standards and very very easy. It does so many things different it's worth playing. Very few jrpgs have platforming in their dungeons or this sort of quirky dialogue. The timing event and plethora of mini-games are also uncommon.

>> No.2123112

>>2123106
I'd argue that SMRPG had more customization than most JRPGs this side of FFV. Yeah choosing your party members or picking a stat-up on a level up isn't that much but most JRPGs don't even have that and I really liked that little bit of customization for what it's worth.

Also while people keep saying that SMRPG is easy, I didn't find it too easy. It's not exactly hard but it's at least consistently challenging because grinding is so inefficient. Also boss fights are simply fun enough to offset any lack of difficulty, with all the timing challenges, banter and combat puzzles.

To address OP's question you can't exactly compare SMRPG to SMW, they're from entirely different genres, SMRPG is a turn-based RPG, but it's very solid on its own and easily one of the most fun to play on the system.

>> No.2123134

>>2123102
First off, because that's what OP asked.

Second, because this way we can demonstrate the difference between the styles, and in doing so notice the similarities.

>> No.2123151

>>2123112
It's easy but in a well-designed way. The bosses have a pattern you need to develop a counter strategy to (for example vs Mac all Mp should be conserved for malo to 1-shot all of his summons). The basic enemy formations usually have 1 bad guy that is more dangerous than others and you need to kill him first. You will still die if you don't follow the patterns. What makes it easy is that the patterns are so simple.

It' still saddening that ff5 is still considered a complex jrpg. You'd figure that the genre would strive to be more and more complex, instead the genre has actually gone backwards.

>> No.2123172

>>2122189
in smrpg's terms yes, that is kind of the logical way to make it harder.

>> No.2123212

>>2123172
no it isn't

The problem with the game is that all enemies other than bosses are idiots. They pick a random attack and do it on a random party member.

If you made the enemies coordinate their attacks and actually try to counter the player (i.e. silence the healer, all target the same party member, etc.) that would be a good challenge. It would also make the game 20 times more interesting

Increasing enemy health ruins the pacing and makes you end up doing the exact same strategy but several turns in a row.

This goes beyound the scope of a simple rom-hack.

>> No.2123619

>>2123212
It's also something that didn't happen in almost all JRPGs back then.
