What are the best PlayStation era RPGs? My brother-in-law and I are going to play a ton of them soon. So far we have:
Lunar SSSC
Legend of Mana
Xenogears
FF 7,8,9
Saga Frontier

What else, /vr/?

I don't own and have never played EBC. For shame, I know. I remembered that right after my post.

Not on that list of RPGs and sort-of RPGs:
Azure Dreams
Jade Cocoon
Grandia
Vandal Hearts
Thousand Arms
Wild Arms 1 and 2
Tales Of- (if using an emulator or willing to burn to a CD, get Cless' Phantasia translation)
Chocobo's Dungeon 2
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Breath of Fire 3 and 4 (don't worry too much about playing 1-2 if you don't want to do SNES, but you might want to put that on the back burner)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Digimon World games
Monster Rancher 1 and 2
Dragon Seeds

GRANDIA MOTHERFUCKER

Such a sweet game. Great feeling of lighthearted adventure. I don't have any nostalgia for it either, I just played it recently. It's just that good.

Oh! That's right! Suikoden 2 is coming to the PSN this Thursday.
Time for a replay.

Shadow Madness is passable.

Beyond the Beyond isn't a good game, but the hatred for it is overblown as fuck, don't even lump that game with fucking garbage like shadow madness.

Fucking beyond the beyond was basically the first golden sun game, and yet golden sun gets praised.

Literally people that just parrot reviewers who were mad that beyond the beyond wasn't FF7.

I actually enjoyed BtB. It was the first PSX rpg I played (and one of the first PSX games I played period), so that might have something to do with it.

>> No.2111924

legend of mana and Valkyrie profile are my personal favorites. LoM goes about $40 and VP regularly sells for $75-$100+ in good condition.

Also going to recommend the Tales games to OP, along with Tales of Phantasia PS1, which while never localized was fan translated (also worth OP knowing that the games get more refined and fluid as they went on, from Destiny to Phantasia PS1 to Eternia). Unfortunately, if you want physical copies, Destiny and Eternia (known as Destiny II in the US) go for a lot these days. I see Destiny going from $75 to $100 locally, while Eternia can fetch $90-120. Doesn't help that neither have PSN versions, likely because Namco sees no point in putting the older entries in the series on there.

Also worth noting the the games feature multiplayer co-op (like most console Tales games do). In Destiny and Phantasia PS1 you do need a particular item equipped to access it though, while Eternia has it as a menu option after obtaining a key item at the dojo a short way into the game.

Wild Arms 1 and 2 are also great. The lack of editing for WA2's translation does leave a bit to be desired there though.

Here's a embarrassing confession, I never had a PS1 as a kid, I played some PS1 platformers at one my friend's house but that's it.
A couple years ago I got a PSP for cheap and decided to dive on that RPG library. That year was the best gaming year I ever had. One amazing game after the other.

I had a PS1 when it was current growing up but was never allowed much for it (or indeed, any system I had until recently). Got into RPGs a few years back and have been having a blast with a lot of the ones I've played since, and the PS1's library of them certainly hasn't disappointed me yet (at least of what I've played). And while I do like physical copies, the PSP has made it quite easy to play them, especially those that are otherwise a too expensive/hard to find for me to drop money on without at least trying them out first.

Golden Sun gets praised because it was on a Nintendo System. It get's just as much sit from non Nintendofags if not more
