Almost every name in FFVII is a pun. These were lost in the subpar localization or were just not feasible in our language.

If you wanted to write the English word "earth" in katakana, you would probably write エアリス. Lo and behold, this is what her name was in the Japanese game.

Aerith returns to the planet after she dies. She lives on in the earth. Her limit breaks, which include "Breath of the Earth", deal with the earthen/heavenly dichotomy.

While it doesn't perfectly convey the meaning, "Aerith" more closely resembles what the name is intended to evoke.

It's always been bullshit to me and I don't understand why everyone was so okay with it around here. Aeris was one of the first game characters I felt truly attached to, however lame that may be. I was attached to Aeris, and that's the character that's still in the game when I revisit it now, not Aerith.

That being said it's pretty much nbd because all of the post-ffvii appearances have been pretty bad anyways, except kingdom hearts 1

One thing that I've always wondered is why is Freya's Japanese name フライヤ (Fu-rai-ya) and not フレイヤ (Fu-rei-ya).

Translating it literally it makes it seem like her name is Fryer or Flyer. Her romanizaed name is Freija so it's obviously supposed to be Freya, but is there a reason the katakana doesn't match that? My Japanese knowledge is practically zilch so I've always been confused about it.

>> No.2109983

Aeolus is the god of wind in Greek mythology, and her first limit break is called "healing wind."

Just some food for thought.

Bizarro Sephiroth is really supposed to be called Rebirth Sephiroth, but the translators misinterpreted "Rebirth" as "Reverse"

Well the Norse God Freyja can be written in a number of ways, like Freya, Freija, Frejya, Freyia, Froya, Frojya, Freia, Freja, and Freiya.

Then there's Froy or Freyr who is not the same god as Freyja, but similar names.

So who knows what they meant with her name or which one it was based on:p

But seriously, I never got the "I sound like I have a lisp" argument. It only sounds like you have a lisp if you still mentally think of her name as "Aeris." Do you sound like you have a lisp when you say the word "Earth?" Or "worth?"

They did it with Romancing SaGa and DQ games, so it's not that far out of left field to do so. Outside of a new localization effort (translation errors are fixed now) and callbacks to other games I don't see anything a full remake would actually make better though.

This.

The PC version is also good because of the fixes it had to the translation (localization was kept intact) and mods if you want them. Nothing was really harmed in it, not after they changed the music back.

Either way though, PS4 is probably confirmed for the worst already.

The thing that bugs me the most is when they change names for no reason, and it actually severs links / references to other games. Like changing Desperado to Cold Blood in the US release of FFXIII, killing the FFVIII reference. There's no reason for that.

Another example is Star Ocean 3, where they changed a buttload of names for no reason, and pretty much every reference to SO2 was thrown out the window. Even spell names weren't safe. Not to mention all of the demon names being messed with for no reason, like Lucifer, Azazel, Belial, and Beelzebub being changed to Luther, Azazer, Berial, and Belzeber.
