I finished DQIX a couple days ago (post-game story included).
I went with low expectations, but it was pretty good in the end.

If I had to rate the series...

Best gameplay: DQIII
Best characters: DQIV
Best story: DQV
Best world: DQVII
Best graphics: DQVIII

DQII: 6/10 same as the first one
DQIII: 8/10 Even if the story isn't a masterpiece, you feel like a part of something big, and the sense of adventure entangle you till the end.
DQIV: 8/10 You never feel alone, your friends have charm, and the story is pretty good.
DQV: 9/10 A simple yet incredible emotional story, you grow fond of the characters just like you grow in the game.
DQVI: 7/10 Everything is there, but on the whole something feels off.

>> No.2105186

DQ8 - 9 Great gameplay and Story balance. NPC dialogue foreshadowing all the cutscene events was great.
DQ1 - 10 Constant 1-1 battles made the game design very tight. How much money you save up and what you buy when can have a huge effect on how long it takes to play the game. Only RPG I ever tried speedrunning.
DQ2 - 7 A bigger adventure than the first dragon quest, but not as interesting.
DQ3 - 8 The tavern is great. The way the game is divided into separate stories you can beat different orders is cool, but for how long it is, I wish the plot tied together a little more.
DQ5 - 8 I really liked this one, and having the option to hear party members opinions of every little plot point was cool too. The game is so fucking depressing, though. This kid has the absolute worst luck of any Dragon quest hero.
DQ9 - 7 Dragon quest 3, except more linear and with tons of MMO-tier sidequests (Free to play MMO-tier). Story was good, but the gameplay was boring, and every time I bothered to continue, I'd forgotten a lot of the plot.

>DQ4 was fairly easy, but it seemed like the port made it even easier?
Yes and no.
There are aspects of the original that are way easier, but some in the revamp (PS1/DS/iOS) that make it even easier than that, should you know how to take advantage of them.
The mini medal system in the NES lets you rip enemies to shreds if you trade for a bunch of Swords of Miracles. In the DS, the Miracle Sword is harder to get, and the medal system has changed.
On the flipside, there's more accessories to help even out some weaknesses of your members, like Crift/Cristo/Kiryl's iffy attack stat, and some equipment that lowers magic damage that wasn't in the original, such as the Magical Skirt.

DQ (GBC): 6/10
Very charming, but ultimately too simple for my tastes.
DQII (GBC): 5/10
More ambitious than the first game, but also more confusing and obtuse.
DQIII (GBC): 9/10
Fantastic sense of adventure, and party creation is great. Definitely one of the best.
DQIV (NES, DS): 8.5/10
Best cast of any DQ game, tons of fun, I just felt like both versions I played were flawed in some way.
DQV (SNES, DS): 10/10
My personal favorite. Excellent plot and characters, a very emotional game. It also has my favorite OST. I actually preferred the SNES version.
DQVIII (PS2): 8/10
Lovely graphics, voice acting, and music, manages to keep the feeling of traditional DQ, but I can't get into 3D games the same way I can with 2D ones.
DQIX (DS): 7.5/10
Glad to see character creation back, and I love the enormous post game, but enemies being on the overworld is sort of lame, and the main character's models are jarring in comparison to most NPC sprites.

What are yall's favorite songs in the series?

DQIII for nes is slower game that shows it's age with it's a more clunky interface but believe it or not, it's far more tense and exciting experience then the more "comfy" and relaxing SNES version.

It's like crossing the desert to the kingdom of ISIS was always a memorable moment for me on the NES version. After a while, the desert started to feel endless, the monsters where far stronger and you're running low on mp, and to make it more stressful it's getting dark. But then! Right before you start cursing the game, BOOM, an oasis appears. The game made me feel like I was crossing a perilous desert. Creating that tension and pulling back at the right moment was something DQIII insanely well.

So, I try out the SNES version, after hearing everyone say it's better. I'm about to cross the desert, I'm psyching myself and getting prepared for the dangerous journey that awaits and... oh wait I'm already there. With a bottomless bag of healing supplies, weapons that attack multiple enemies and other stat boosting items I almost fell like I'm play DQIII with cheat codes. THEN, to make it worse, the location of a once cleverly hidden item in the kingdom of ISIS might as well had arrows pointing toward it's direction. It was that obvious. I suppose an agility boosting item doesn't mean much anymore when you can buy or win agility boosting items now...

So yeah, the SNES version run smoother is better looking and has some extra content, but the sense of danger and adventure that I loved from the original felt compromised because of it.

Well, DQ4 has roughly half of what you'd find in that, despite having lots of player and NPC characters, despite the localizations for the party chat being likely brand new (because Plus Alpha wasn't credited).

https://sites.google.com/site/dq4opentrans/ will give you a good idea of what you're going to get, but just keep in mind that it's now full of puns, accents, and dialects that are completely pointless, some even being full on retard, such as bringing a mention of guns (as in wild west cowboy guns) from Hank Hoffman Jr. despite there never being guns in any DQ.

I got the boat and I stopped playing cause suddenly I felt completely lost. I'm not sure what I have to do next. visit the land from the first game or something?

>Who do you want to see in Dragon Quest Heroes?
Based Kiefer and Melvin. Especially Aira. Fuck Maribel up the ass. She can stay out. Gabo, I don't think will work too well, given that they glued him to his wolf, but then again, he could be a horse-rider style character. Any MCs not DQ1 Descendant (AND NO I DON'T MEAN FUCKING KENSHIN'S BLONDE ASS) will likely be too samey and I honestly don't think they'll be the first-picks due to voice-acting. Maybe some more of the stand-out NPCs/temps as well, such as Sharkeye, Papas/Pankraz, and maybe even Prince Harry/Henry. The DQSwords partners, such as Claymore would definitely be cool, but they'll probably just slap in Fleurette for fanservice and call it a day.

DQ10, but off-line. Literally, all I want.

DQ 1: 6/10
Really fun and simple. Not too hard, but still has its challenges.
DQ 2: 4/10
This one kind of disappointed me a bit, just felt like the first one but significantly more difficult, even though you got party members.
DQ 3: 9/10
The NES version is pretty good, but playing the SNES version really makes this one shine. Loads of fun with a really satisfying amount of challenge.
DQ 4: 10/10
This is easily one of my favorite DQ games. The plot and the gameplay really come together in a fantastic way here.
DQ 5: ?/10
I haven't played enough of this one to pass judgement on it yet.
DQ 6: 10/10
This one has my favorite plot out of any DQ game that I've played. Its really excellent, and I really like the way that the dream/real world stuff works. My other favorite DQ.
DQ 7: ?/10
Also haven't played much of this one.
DQ 8: ?/10
Can't get this one to emulate, so I'll just have to hope to find a cheap copy and a PS2 at some point. Based on what I've seen, seems really cozy and great.
DQ 9: 5/10
Tries too hard to be DQ3 but with a lot of added online stuff. Unfortunately, it just feels really lazy, and its kind of a disappointment.

>Dragon Warrior 2
7/10 - Much better than the first

>Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure/Cobi's Journey

10/10 - The main story is nice, especially considering it's just a save the land thing at first. There's a lot of monsters and it's possible to get any monster to maximum stats meaning dream teams can be made. The Appraised Key system gives the game a lot of extra content.

>Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
7/10 Coming off of DWM2, I had high expectations and it partially delivers. Where it lacks is a post-game in depth as it's predecessor and even less monsters, but the full immersion into 3D works well. Online tournaments also were an option with prizes awarded to the winners.

>Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
10/10 - I love this game. The story is good and the party creation/job system gives the player a range of options for team making. The reincarnation system keeps you leveling up while the extra dungeons and legacy dungeons give you more reasons to play. It's also multiplayer, meaning you and friends can take on these challenges together. If you have a 3ds and like rpgs, get this game.

>Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
?/10 I haven't finished yet, but I really don't want to with the gigantic encounters. I got to the Missing Lynx and got wiped out because I was in the middle of the field. I need to play it more to give it an honest opinion.

DQVIII has my favorite world map ever to explore. Not the best world map period, no. But no world map has ever been as fun and exciting to see and explore for the first time than DQVIII.

DQV has the best story and by far the best hero, in the sense that he's not. DQV Hero doesn't care a lot about saving the world. Dude KNOWS who the bad guys are and where they are, but he doesn't go out of his way to do anything about it. He's technically looking for the legendary hero, but really he's just looking for his mom. And even then, he drops his adventure because some bitches want his jock. And even after he restarts his adventure, he finds out he's the king of a land and decides "Fuck everything else I was doing, I'm sitting on mah throne". World's lucky that they fucked with his family cause I don't believe for a second he leaves his kingdom for anything else.

And even when he's going to fight the big bad, even THEN, he's really just going to find his parents.

Dude just didn't care about shit and he's the best.

>>2112679
He cared, but he didn't have any solid leads and he'd been almost everywhere he could possibly go at that point, considering he didn't have a magic carpet, castle, or dragon to fly around on.
It's why Pankraz/Papas decided to settle down with you for a while and even wanted to let you have a normal childhood for a while, well, until all that bullshit with the kidnappers happened.

Madason didn't do too bad either, I mean, he saved coburg from corruption which was pretty important, found the Z sword, got the Z shield, got a lead on the Z helm, found out he wasn't the legendary hero just in case, probably got his cat back, married and had kids with a zenithian (-descent), and became a king with a someodd soldiers and scholars at his command (IIRC, even his uncle and Harry/Henry and his King-brother tried to get their servants to search for him if you check the dialogs).

I would say not to do this.

Soldier / Priest / Wizard is the classic setup with the priest or wizard becoming a sage and the other two recruits staying their original class to the end of the vanilla story. Technically as long as you have a healer, the other two classes don't matter too terribly much.

Here's the main problem you'll run into if you class change early: you'll have to grind the other characters levels up. This is a massive pain in the ass, and honestly it's better to wait until the end of the vanilla DQ3 quest if you want to class change for the additional content. Then getting your characters back up to snuff won't be such a chore.

Go for it. You might have a bit of trouble early on due to no blaze/fireball/ice/explosion specialist caster along with no defense boosts. The hero class learns the basic blaze and fireball spells and much later learns the second-tier explosion spell, then later the first and second-tier lightning spells.
You might find yourself relying on boomerangs and whips a bit more as a result, but that's not exactly bad, especially since you have a single-target/crit-specialist in the fighter.

In my most recent play, I've been using the hero F, thief F, dealer F, and mage F. So far, I've been doing surprisingly well, as the hero can deal with most early-game healing pretty well, and the mage can handle combat easily, especially with defense buffs. Thieves and Dealers have surprising utility with whips and boomerangs, and the dealers have some nice early-game armor to make them a bit tank-ish.
>>2112979
This isn't true at all. Once you get to rimuldar, grinding is fucking cake, especially if you bedragon.
Even before that, it's not very hard, because once you class change, you level up faster than normal, at least for a while. Also, if he's playing the SFC version, it's even easier to deal with.
>>2113113
It doesn't. That was just a stupid ass false rumor, just like the beastmaster in DQ6 becoming a blue mage.
>>2113185
Not him, but even without fast-forwarding, it's not that long. To get to the end of DQ7 took me a little over 100 hours. To beat DQ8 and get the post-game second-ending took me roughly the same time, but exactly 100 hours (yeah, I know, I was shocked too). And yet nobody ever whines about DQ8 being long.

My most recent run was Hero M, Fighter M, Thief M, and Dealer M, which eventually became Hero, Warrior, Sage, and the Dealer was actually dropped off at the Immigrant Town and a new Cleric recruited that became a Fighter.
