Are sprite comics something we can talk about here? Lord knows /co/ chased me off when I've brought up the subject. They're almost retro themselves now, being at their peak in the early 2000s. Anyone read them back In the day, or do so currently? What were your favorites? Any recommendations that are still worth a read now?

I remember playing those Newgrounds Megaman games by some Maelstrom guy, and one of them featured some characters from two other sprite comics. One of them was a Maverick Hunter, I assume, who really liked beer. He came from a comic where X and Zero were portrayed as lovers. The other was a gray Megaman recolor where he came from a comic that featured other NES characters and settings. One of the comics had Elecman and some others apparently lost, and they stumbled upon Palutena and asked her for "head...err, directions". Another panel was calling Mighty Bomb Jack "Michael Bobo Jackson".

I used to read one called That's my sonic or oh my sonic.
Also (by that era), a friend of mine used to do a Sonic anime (not using sprites but animating a small window by hand) and we would dub it. Later he kept on doing more or less the same but based on Tibia instead of Sonic and being gifs (so the speak was actually written)

One of my favorite comics from back then is also one of the most /vr/ comics possible: Oldskooled ( http://oldskooled.comicgenesis.com/index.html ) A simple concept of various NES characters like Mario, Samus, Pit, & Strider Hiryu congregating together in their favorite bar. Hilarious ensues. It'll only take you a few minutes to read the whole archive, so check it out.

The first couple of years, yes. Then he developed his own style and that's when everyone went crazy trying to steal his stuff and the guy's temper went to hell.

The jokes could be plain weird (Felicia could turn human if you groped her tits using the Konami code) and the author had a raging boner against post Sega Genesis Sonic as well but it still was a decent read.

His jokes could catch you offguard most of times, mostly because Maneko was one of the very few authors who wasn't making a comic about fights, supwerpowers and overpowered self-inserts killing everyone.

His short temper and his love for horrible puns were an issue, but (Maneko was a really cool and helpful dude as long you don't step on his nerves. (According to a chat we had on IRC, he admited to "have more nerves than a cheap steak" which explained a lot and made me want to strangle him at the same time.)

Neko's-something, and Gatomon's pitful attempts to rehabilitate Meowth were a sub-story from the habitual innuendo and smut from th other characters.

It's forum thread at BnG's board still must be buried around, but the author closed the comic on late 2010 and dissapeared from the net after getting tired of the forum's bad vibes.
Well, practically everyone there were at odds with the staff after Dave left and they tried to take over the community for themselves.

AkumaTH and MGComics is still around. Power Rings is still up but the comic hasn't updated in three years now and the forums are rotting. The Mystical Forest Zone has apparently been dead since early 2013. That's about it for all of the Sonic sprite comics worth a shit that don't involve Psyguy outside of used to using his old website as a place to find sprites.

Out of all of that business, I recommend you read AkumaTH's comic. It's old as all balls, having started in late 2001. And it's still going; last update was the Friday on the 5th. It's pretty much Dragonball Z but with Sonic characters since the creator is a huge fighting fan. Expect professional wrestling, Dragonball, Street Fighter, and shonen anime in general to be referenced or joked about.

In case you think I'm joking about this, Sonic is a side character (in a Sonic-centered webcomic), and he has around five different forms he can power up to. Also the Undertaker (you know, of WWF/WWE fame) is the son of a creature that eats realities.

Also obligatory claim that you need to read Kid Radd. It's old, it's good, and you WILL end up reading it from beginning to end. It's /vr/: the webcomic. Doesn't help that it's also completely finished.

I think it was popular because, in a way, it had charm. I found it as a kid and kept up with it all the way until it ended, because it wasn't trying too hard (like many BnG clones were) and it didn't try to be super-serious all the time. That ridiculously dumb made-on-the-run story was genuine, man.

A lot of the other comics were either too serious, or trying way too hard to be funny. Back then the only comics I checked regularly were Bob and George and Dragon Tails.

I also kept up with Sonic and Pals for a while, but dropped it because it kept repeating the same joke over and over...
