1 - Some restaurants are collaborating with the event, so if you take boxset 11 (or any old ones, if your copy isn't delivered in time), you have access to a special menu.
2 - To fully 'clear' the event, you need to go through it twice, like Ghosts 'n Goblins

They've also asked people to bring writing tools, so there maybe be signatures as well.

I appreciate every episode we can get but does anyone else get kinda put off by the point and click adventure type ones, which seem to be a lot of murder mysteries? I get so confused on who is who and what's happened, because I'm obviously not playing so I'm missing some details, that it gets overwhelming too fast and I get bored. I watch them anyway, but I don't think they're as fun as action game episodes.

They're not my favorite and I do get a bit lost as the viewer missing lots of key points. They're still enjoyable but I'd much rather see games with actual input. The most recent one was pretty good as a game because each option progressed time, which is usually the reason novel games suck as they simply wait for you to flag each step.

Just finished watching the Budokan special, and man... that part where Nakayama came in that awesome outfit just blew my mind. That was fucking epic. I'm now confuse if he was really shy, since he made a hell of a performance. There's also the possibility of him growing confidence through the show and losing his shyness (which would make my fondness for him grow even more).

You could manually edit the softsub files to change the font size.

In .ass files it's under [V4+ Styles].
I did this for the GnT Famicom battle .ass because it didn't display correctly on the 1080i version of the raw.

A big part of the 24h batsu games is the gags involving / done buy other celebrities/comedians. I've just rewatched Quest of Ki again and wanted to finish it off with the live special where Arino attempts the last few levels, just to find out it's not on my HDD.

The SA page lists it as not subbed, but I'm like 90% sure I've seen this subbed. Is my mind playing tricks on me?

Seriously though, there would be absolutely no reason for filming over 10 hours footage for each challenge nor doing 24-hour specials and live events if they were staging it.

Anyone who follows variety/owarai probably knows that the Japanese method works by letting the cast go wild in front of camera, filming fucktons of footage and the editing in the most entertaining parts while dumping parts that totally bombed. Some episodes of Ametalk go on for so long that the live audience is instructed to leave and sometimes even the whole crew gets out of the studio because the next crew has to come to film their program.
Cue cards (kanpe) are used by directors mostly to instruct the MC (introducing things, going to the next corner, wrapping things up, etc; Shabekuri 007 is pretty transparent about it) or telling the cast to stop horsing around too much. And while some staffs apparently use kanpe like picture related ("bokete", make a joke / act like a fool), comedians say it's the worst kind of cue card to get since it forces you to make a shot in the dark without any planning or timing.

The only show I regularly watched in the past was Conan, but it seems to me that American late-night talkshows are based on extremely scripted monologue and gags plus planned-out guest conversations, complete with lots of pauses and applause lights for audience reactions. There are improvised moments here and there, but overall the stuff is far more staged than Japanese variety.

This is pretty clear. There was an early episode where Arino outright says that he's pretty terrible at action games and they still bring him mostly those.

The only other thing that isn't so real is Arino's relationship with the ADs. He makes fun of them in the show but when you see them in backstage segments you can see Arino treating them with more respect.

If you want to understand the differences, I'd recommend watching the Kid Kool/Kakefu Kun episode (Season 12).

AVGN becomes enraged in a couple of minutes, starts nitpicking every single gameplay flaw until he loses it and throws the cartridge in the trash can. His gig is based on how he gets angry at the bad games he plays.

Arino, on the other hand sees every gameplay element as an additional challenge, as he's openly unskilled with action games and makes fun at his own mistakes. When he's stuck, the Assistant Director helps him, he receives advice via fax from the actor who played the main character (it's a licensed game in Japan), he has access to plenty of material the Nerd doesn't. (and wouldn't work with, given the lack of context). Besides, Arino may be a comedian, but the challenges are based on how he struggles to finish the games (which can take several hours, and sometimes he fails to complete them). He's probably the opposite to AVGN that he rarely gets angry and always tries so hard that it's impossible to not cheer for him. Not to mention the challenges are interspersed with different segments, such as arcade trips and quiz games about retro consoles.

I've seen people talk about this series for a long time, on /v/ and on /vr/, so I grabbed the DKC2 videos to see what all the fuss is about. Having watched the trilogy I've got to say I really didn't find it particularly funny. The episode runtimes were bloated with uninteresting sideshow sections, and while Kaichou seems like a nice guy he's not a very charismatic/interesting host. It felt like I was watching a bland youtube LPer, only in Japanese.

What do people like about this series? Is it a cultural thing? Maybe it's because I was running a high fever at the time but I'm just not seeing the appeal.

DKC2 was more about the game than the chief. Where he shines most is in more obscure platformers and action games. He's never incredibly funny, expect a few chuckles and a strong sense of camaraderie.

The sideshow sections are some of the best parts, although the non-tamage ones can be pretty boring depending on the season. If you don't like the arcade trips though, you have no soul. Without them, it'd just be an hour straight of a guy playing a game.

Watch a few more, either of games you remember or games you don't. Pretty much everything past the SNES era isn't very good though, OoT in particular is awful.

I like the fact that Arino is a likable guy with good sense of humour, the funny staff interactions and great side segments. Maybe it's just not your cup of tea, but definitely check out more episodes to be sure. Mega Man, Mario games, Battletoads, and maybe Bio Miracle, Paris-Dakar or Takeshi's Castle from the more obscure ones.

(I like DKC 1 episodes though even though it seems like there are some who hate them.)

Those longer multi-part mainstream game episodes tend to be the worst. DKC and Yoshi's Island are among the worst episodes, imo. The obscure games are best to watch.

And for the love of god, if you see an episode where he plays one of your favorite games that you know back and forth, skip it. I've nearly torn my hair out on several occasions watching him play a Megaman game.

Some info about what's to come from the next year, from the year-straddling 15-minute special (and a partial, barely spell-checked, done-over-day-beers translation of the funnier parts).

- There will be the release of the 4th in a series of adventure books based on the show (I can find very little information on these books, but it seems they're adventure (duh)/RPG style you try and solve a mystery, Choose You Own Adventure Style), with three stores (Aeon Lake Town Saitama (Saitama prefecture), Aeon Mall Okayama (Okayama prefecture), and Aeon Mall Nagoya Chaya (Aichi prefecture) will have events in April and May, run by "A massive fan with a lot of skill, who'll be paid by his own passion!".

- There will (probably!) be an overseas trip on BS-Sky Perfect, run by a first time Producer. When Arino asked where it would be:

- Kan "Well, where do you want to go?"
- Arino "I keep saying this, but I hate going overseas! It's scary when you don't speak the language! So anywhere is fine! So long as I can tick the staff off for a short amount of time."
- Kan "So fundamentally speaking, you don't want to go?"

- Discussed during the bus quiz, on the last night of the America trip a bunch of the staff were drinking in their hotel. When the beer ran out, Abe sent VE Fukawa to buy some from a nearby gas station because "They're sure to be open!"
The store was closed, Fukawa was too scared to come back empty-handed, so he tried to find another place got lost, and was declared missing by the staff the next morning. They came close to calling the police over it.

(Abe claims to have no relocation of even sending him out shopping.)

- Kan is a complete assassin at bumper cars. He kept cornering people and trapping them, totally deadpan. Arino almost knocked Inoue out of his car.

Well, while the subbers are doing old episodes, new ones are still airing.

So I think they opted to go for the newer, better video quality ones for a while, and leave the more obscure older ones. Now they're going back and doing a mix.

Kakaricho may be able to give more details, but that's how I always assumed it went.

Honestly I'm happy for anything. If it's a game I know, cool. If it's some obscure Japan-only thing, then it lets me know about something new.

Very nearly all the episodes from the older seasons are translated by now, although some episodes were licensed (and horribly mangled) by Kotaku. Once that expired Discotek picked them up and released them on an official DVD, same translators and everything.

Yeah, I worder that poorly. I meant that the translators are the same as for most of the other released episodes.

For those new to GCCX, in the episodes they licensed Kotaku dubbed over Kan's narration and replaced him with a terrible English-speaking guy who couldn't even pronounce Abe's name correctly. After Discotek picked it up they thankfully got a proper translation for them from the usual group and left the Kotaku dub in only as an option.

They still had to omit the side stuff like the tamages but they translated those separately and you can just download 'em.

People just translate what they want AFAIK. I wanted to do Koshien because it's a hilarious episode, and because I love the Koshien tournament (that and the accompanying knowledge of baseball terms also gave me an advantage).

There’s not a lot of continuity between episodes in recent seasons anyway, so it makes more sense to translate episodes you’re interested in, as you’ll do a better job and finish faster.

That said, with my job it’ll still take me a lot longer to finish anything.

It's kind of common, the President of my company over here remembers people by nicknames based on how he remembers them, and after hearing how he refers to some of my co-workers, me being "the big guy who knows his way around a buffet dinner and can hold his booze" seems almost nice, given the fact that he doesn't criticize my work.

He is not Hamada. Hamada is well known for being sadistic, Arino is not.
Arino is a regular tsukkomi like Endo from Cocorico for example. Also, the jokes he pull on Watanabe always suck, and let's be honest, he is a good tsukkomi, but he's not Hamada tier good.

Just curious, since each episode ends with a plug for The Game Makers, is that essentially more in the vein of the first season where they go through the history of games/gaming? Such a vague/niche title isn't showing up much for me with google. Highly doubt there are any subs out there, but wondering if someone could at least describe what exactly that show is.

Anyway, it was zari-gani who originally posted them and said "Arino demonstrating his soccer skills on Ametalk" so I was going by that, I haven't seen either one personally so I wouldn't know.
