This is just the retro.
Theres quite a few more ps2/ps3 and gc/wii/wii-u

Been looking to expand to Sega Genesis and I probably will buy one once school ends for the semester. Need to get UVG for my NES games but I need more games for a bulk order.

These pictures are about 4-5 months old, and they show about two thirds of my current collections. I have a few more consoles (like the Sega CDX and Ice Blue N64 to name a couple) the PSX/PS2 games have their own set of shelves about the size of the shelf units shown here now, and the Genesis/SNES games have almost doubled. These don't show my Atari/Coleco/Intelli games either.

Haven't really had that problem...

>some games won't work
>hold power for 5 minutes

Firmware update.

>controller is shit

I have plenty of controllers for the other systems.

>hdmi only

Legitimate complaint. I really wish it had RGB or at least s-video or composite out, but I do love the output quality and it giving MUCH less input lag than when I hook an older system up to my flat panel TV when I don't want to use the CRT (easier for multiplayer with friends considering couch/TV locations).

>shit on the emulator

I haven't really noticed any problems. It's FAR superior to any OAC clone consoles.

In the name of cable management/power setup/switch management/space saving it's a lot more convenient to use the r5 too. I have all the originals, most with RGB or s-video mods even, but I really like the convenience and versatility of the system.

Also I can use translations and romhacks with my carts now, which adds a massive extra dimension to my collection and has pushed me into importing a lot more (especially JRPGs).

How do you guys determine what games to buy next?

I browse craigslist regularly but its usually junk, or eBay prices or greater, as such I usually do most of my shopping on eBay because fuck guys that charge eBay prices for in person deals.

If I'm browsing craigslist I'll try for shit thats cheap, but I find that I usually come up dry, and I usually end up buying games that I liked in my childhood in no particular order (maybe a game every 2 weeks or so, depending on prices).

Do you guys have a system?

My collection criteria is more or less "anything I don't have." But I'm also very passive in acquiring games. Rarely if ever have I actively sought out a specific game. I buy when I find stuff for cheap, be it individual items or sets that have a few titles I want. Sell the doubles. Repeat. If I'm lucky, I can sell the spares at a markup to discount the ones I keep, if not make them effectively free.

Hello /vr/,

I'm really interested in collecting older systems, as the oldest thing I have currently is an N64 (and honestly out of all the retro systems it's my least favourite that I've gotten to play on) and I want to expand out. My friend is a professional at scraping up thrift stores and has gotten a ton of crazy old shit (of course, in bad condition) and it's piqued my interest in collecting and playing old video games.

Blog post aside, I live in Canada and in some farmtown where I'd have to drive a considerable distance for anything on craigslist (and I only use transit because hooray for being poor enough to not want a car) and I've never bothered using Ebay because it seems like people inflate prices too much- so what is the best place to find good deals on retro consoles and games? I'm not too much a stickler for shipping prices because of not having a car currently but if craigslist is by far the best option I'll just try it some more

This is where your collection goes once you have enough kids to fill all the extra rooms in the house.
Old computer systems (Tandy, C64, IIe) in the boxes, along with 25+ years of controllers, accessories, adapters, cables, etc.
Here's most of the stuff.

Drawer of SNES is not pictured. Along with old floppies, and a lot of misc games.
Also most of the systems that can be, are modded. One of the pics is of a hacked 4MB hucard flash cart. Also have Doctor GB64.

Did you and your wife game hard before the kids?

Do you ever wish you had more time for vidya?

Don't think I could ever commit to the idea of kids, because I value my time too much.

I gamed hard. Wife played a little bit. She grew up with NES/SNES in the house and two older brothers. So she played a bit. Like most women, she had a girl boner for the Mario Party games, so we still play those sometimes.
Like music, nothing new is better than when you loved it the most. So even though I played everything current, I still went back to NES/SNES the most. Emulation on Xbox, and now Wii easily fill that need while making sure the living room is still neat and tidy.

I grew up loving mobile gaming. Gameboy defined my childhood. I always loved the idea of being able to game anywhere.
Cellphone/Mobile gaming has filled that urge. Freemium is a bit of a bitch, but Square has taken quite a bit of my money on games I've already purchased 2,3, sometimes 4 times.

Kids only really take a lot of time while they're babies. Once they get around 3, they are independent enough to play on their own, and don't need you to do literally everything for them. Work takes up more time than the kids do. The "chores" of taking care of my house takes up the rest of the time. Once the kids get old enough, they will be the slave labor that I was when I was a kid.

Staying on topic, sorry for the lack of order. The biggest part of my stuff is in boxes somewhere in my country. Pc big boxes mostly. I told myself I wouldn't buy stuff here in Japan but oh well.

craigslist is just so fucking awful. its hell on earth. so many fucking flakes, so many fucking times ive wasted my entire afternoon and gas money because some fuck lied and said there were no cracks in the disc or that it was complete when in reality it was just the manual and a shitty jewel case without insert. not to mention they expect ridiculous amounts and have no idea the value.

i watch a game on eBay and refuse to pay a dollar more than what it goes for on price charts.

my one recommendation is to never trade in at game stores, it's a waste of gasoline and time (however sometimes they have decent prices if its been sitting in the case for years and gone up in value)...

idk man there is no good way to collect. eBay is your best bet tbh. as you know though, it's a gamble.

My wife loves Pewdiepie. We're thinking of sending him an all-in-one retro console to see if we can get him in to Retro Gaming. With any luck he'll play a few games from our NES collection and their price will shoot up.

My local game pub has retron 5's on their tv's and that's the only place I've had a chance to play one. I first tried playing Gradius lll which would slow down and freeze, than axelay which just started freaking out whenever you did anything, we tried gunstar heros, which ended up freezing part way through the first boss fight, any game that used mode 7 instantly broke, which removed a good portion of its entire advertised library. And to top it off, while I was there one of the retrons straight up broke when someone tripped over a cord and the retron slid off of the 1 1/2 ft. shelf. The retron shattered into a million pieces as soon as it touched the ground. The same force would have left a slight ding on an n64 or similar console, and probably would have kept playing the game.

tl:dr from personal experience, the retron is a disaster of a system

Weird. Only game in my collection I couldnt' get to work so far was Accolade Turrican for the Genesis, but most of my real Genesis won't play the same cart except for one of my model-2s. Everything else has been fine so far, including Gunstar Heroes.

I wonder if the firmware updates really fixed that much? I've only tried it from 1.6 up.
