Does ePSXe run into any problems emulating the PS1 Final Fantasies?

>> No.2088342

>>2088324
As far as I know, ePSXe has some special flags for FF7 and FF9, hacks you turn on to make it emulate certain things differently so it doesn't lock up the game.

Last I saw, the hack for the battle swirl for FF7 just removed it outright so it wouldn't crash. The hack for FF9 makes the battle menu's visible, since otherwise they are missing.

They don't emulate perfectly, but they are fully playable.

Great idea for a thread OP, I just hope people use the catalog and this thread instead of making "/vr/ is my personal tech support/google service" threads.

Back in 2006, Warren Ellis of Transmetropolitan fame posted on his blog that he would be writing the script for a Castlevania 3:Dracula's Curse animated movie.

In 2008, the following was posted to the official blog for the animation.
"Sorry for the lack of updates. Warren delivered the revised draft of the script in early June. It has generated inquiries from some interested in releasing Castlevania as an animated feature film instead of a direct to DVD. Discussions are ongoing."

In 2009, the devs posted a picture of the Cyclops.

Finally in 2013, the website appears to have died, Ellis hasn't said anything, and the project appears to have vaporized.

We almost had an animated Castlevania movie written by Warren Ellis. This could have been good.

Is there such thing as a multiplayer RPG?
I was wondering if maybe a hibrid of a real time battle and a turn based system could work; i.e. in Valkyrie Profile you have characters you can control for a limited lenght of time, I was thinking that maybe this lenght of time could be tweaked such that you could attack in any way you wanted, within a frame of time; this could allow combos of two or more; thus making the rpg strategic to an extent but multiplayer at the same time. Your thoughts /vr/?

Most of the flashcarts which still work on the DSi work on the 3DS. There have been updates to block flashcards so some of the old ones don't work any more.
The Supercard DSTwo is considered to be the best card. If you want something cheaper, you can also get the R4i Gold. It's a lot easier to find clones of these cards though, so be careful. GBATemp should have trusted sellers.

>>2092940

For all the well known stuff, SNES emulation is just fine. You can also use .WAD files of the virtual console versions of the game. Injectuwad is a tool that allows you to inject a rom into a .WAD to use Nintendo's own emulator but most of the time it's not necessary.

After spending some time with Phantasy Star III, I'm starting to enjoy it. I can't put it above PS4, but so far, it's almost even with PS2, and a bit better than PS1 in all but aesthetics (PS1's music (in FM) is better).

In some odd ways, it almost feels a little like a SaGa game or spinoff.

>> No.2092960

Its ok, but there's no way that you can compare the lazy and boring hallways that pass for dungeons in PS3 with PS2's masterpieces. It gets old.

The Phantasy Star title is kind of a curse for the game though. On the one hand, no one would even play it if it weren't a PS game, but on the other, it has certain standards it has to live up to, and doesn't. But choose a random RPG for the SNES and pop it in and chances you have a game roughly on par with PS3. It isn't really that bad.

>PS2's masterpieces
I haven't beaten PS2, but I'd hardly call its dungeons masterpieces, so much as annoying teleport/stair mazes. I won't say PS3's dungeons are good or even average either. Mediocre at best.
That said, I was considering the games on a whole.
>it has certain standards it has to live up to, and doesn't.
Considering it was only the third game, there weren't many standards for it to live up to other than "be a better PS2", which, in that regard, I'd agree and say it failed. Still, all 4 of the PS games have their own unique aspects and features to them, so, in a retrospective regard, it's somewhat successful.
I still consider 2 the better game on a whole so far, but I do enjoy some of its aspects of 3 on a personal level, such as being able to mess about with the power of your techniques (though I'm not a fan of the rectangular distribution) and a character having all of their techs from the start.
>But choose a random RPG for the SNES and pop it in and chances you have a game roughly on par with PS3.
Yeah, it is a bit generic in some aspects, but not too much in others. There were some really bland ass RPGs on the NES/FC and SFC/SNES alike. I don't consider PS3 bland, save for some of its aesthetics though. Now, if we're going to talk retro jap PCs, it'd be a drop in the bucket. There's all sorts of odd stuff on those that we may never get to properly play, at least in english.
PS3 is no Metal Max entry, that's for sure, but it's not as shoddy as something like Hudson's Momotaro RPGs either.

>> No.2092986

>>2092979

The DS's internet features were shut down a few months back. You might still be able to find private servers though.
Flash cards worked online. You used to find a lot of hackers in Mario Kart and Metroid Prime Hunters. They don't affect the 3DS's online.

It depends, if the games run in DOS then yeah use DOSBox, however if they have to use Win9x you'll need to use a VM. However, if they can run in Win3.1 you can set that up in DOSBox and see if the game will run.

Ok, but now I have another (Idiotic?) idea:

>> No.2094537

>>2094456
You can install, and they may or may not run, but your main problem will be drivers. Does your motherboard and video card manufacturers have drivers for that OS for that hardware? Odds are, the answer is no.

The flip side is also just as troublesome. I managed to get Win7 installed on a Pentium 2 system, but I couldn't find any drivers compatible with Win7 for any of the hardware.

Virtual Machine/Emulation is pretty much the only way to avoid having to build your own retro PC.

You get them when using composite video. It's a very distinct kind of checkerboarding pattern, it's typically more distinct around edges.

It's caused by the chroma and luma signals being mixed, so higher quality video signals like s-video, rgb and component don't suffer from it.

Honestly a quick Google search should teach you everything about it, but I'm a fan of spoonfeeding so.

Google an NES emulator. I use Nestopia and have never had trouble with it; there might be an emulator that does some things better, but it's accurate enough for me so it should be accurate enough for you.

Then look for a ROM of SMB3. There are plenty of sites you can get those on.

Load the ROM in the emulator and it'll play just fine. Other consoles like SNES and Genesis also play just fine like that, though emulators for things like N64 and PS1 are less simple and might require plug-ins for some games. You don't have to worry about that unless you're emulating one of those systems, though.

As to recommendations, there are too many good NES games to list.
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/NES

Pick out something from a genre you like. If you go to the ROMhack general you can find some of the better hacks for some games, too; there are some damn good SMB3 hacks out there.

I dunno.

Thing is back in '80s and early '90s games were seen as toys or cartoons, not how they are today.

Today the industry is more akin to the TV/Movie industry, and just like those industries, people are finding out they can rehash old plots, and come out with countless sequels without so much as a thought of originality. There are still big-budget games that come out with some originality, but like original Hollywood movies it tends to be that we only get 2-5 good ones a year.

Then there's also the indie scene which is hit & miss, but it's where a lot of creativity actually happens. At least when it's not "Pixels are art" type bullshit.

Supposedly the way PS1 copy protection worked didn't allow for the simpler BIN/CUE format that a lot of CD based game systems used. If you are emulating then just keep everything together and try running the CUE, and if that doesn't work, look into converting your format. If you are burning games to play on a modded PS1, then you probably just need to find a program that can burn PS1 games properly. I think Clone CD is the old standby for this, but I don't have a modded PS1 so I don't know from experience. I'm more familiar with burning Saturn games and emulating Sega CD and Turbo CD.

BIN/CUE due to the fact that many PS1 games used CD Audio, and if it was just a standard ISO image file there'd be no CD Audio in the game. CloneCD is another format that does multiple tracks and it has a few other neat things that allows it to make a better 1:1 rip, like keeping any protection the disc might have.

As for burning, I think any burner software should do so long as it can do more than just ISO of course.

PS2 and PS3 have real PSX hardware in them, so the only difference is that the PS2 and PS3 can use "Fast disc read" as an advanced option to read the discs faster than the PSX's shitty laser. It loads some games faster, does nothing for some games, and might break certain games like FF7. Just use whatever is most convenient.

when the fish is on the hook don't push the reel button, this is where you wait for the fish to tire out. After it stops moving reel until it jerks again, then let go and repeat. It takes a little while to learn but once you got it it's really addicting.

p.s. sometimes a fish will just get away, it wont tire out and will just leave you frustrated, this is part of the game and actually part of fishing IRL.

/vr/ I'm struggling to remember a game from my childhood, very hard. I remember many things about the game but can't do the same with the name. Should I open a new thread or could you guys help me with this?

It was an adventure graphic game probably for kids, where you travelled around the world (by plane and each one for each location was different and had a particular aesthetic) and then finally came back to the very first level where shit went down why you were absent during the last flight and everything was creepy and the kids (there were kids in the first level that you could talk to) are all robots or some shit like that, but in the end the real kids were kidnapped in some basement I think.

I could go on with the description but it'd get too long really. I think I'm kinda fucked since it wasn't a very popular game for what I've searched already.

After messing with the CPU settings it seems (least for Next) the "most optimal" would be setting clock speed to 4MHz and set timing to 1 (make sure timing is enabled else the game will be super fast no matter what). The MC will still run probably faster than they're supposed to but it's not quite sonic speed and the cursor still moves smoothly as I found at 2MHz the cursor starts lagging as well.

The issue with Quake 1 & 2, much like with a lot of PC games from the 90's as well as a lot of PS1 games, is that they used CD Audio so originally in order to hear in-game music you needed to either have the physical disc in the game, a proper clone of the CD on a CD-R or a proper CD image rip and a drive emulator that supports the format (like ripping to BIN+CUE or CloneCD and using Daemon Tools). Thankfully with Quake 1 & 2 through mods and whatnot, you can have the music either in a "music" folder or inside a PK3 for the game to load.

I think it started on a boat and you're in this room, and a guy comes in and talks to you and tells you not to leave the room. I think spooky shit starts happening if you actually stay in the room (lights going out, etc). Once you go outside, this loli ghost starts appearing and chasing you around. >mupen64plus

>and the m64py frontend
And the input won't work for shit. The first problem I noticed is that setting analog input is extremely hard because the deadzone is so incredibly tiny that I'm pretty much pushing several directions at once. I don't see a way to make the deadzone bigger, only to move it around, which helps not at all. The second problem after that is that my configs won't save, no matter what I try. So even when I get it configured correctly, the instant I boot a ROM it seems to destroy the old config and set everything to button(334) or whatever number it feels like. These buttons correspond to nothing. So should I ditch m64py, find a different input plugin, or just ditch mupen64plus altogether?

Why are arcade sticks often preferred for fighters over D-pads and analog sticks?
I think arcade sticks only have the four cardinal directions and then adjacent combinations of them, i.e. diagonals, which would be better than an analog stick having a full 360 degree range for less chance of mistakes, but wouldn't it be faster to press inputs on a D-pad? Is it just preference due to arcades or are there legitimate reasons I'm unaware of?

>> No.2140640

>>2140625
Because they offer much better grip and directional control, and faster input with less potential for mistakes.
On any D-pad, trying to do > < is going to give you a jump or block until you learn the dead spots on your controller.
Also, fight stick button layout is far superior to holding shoulders/etc.

Standard method is a qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol. You don't want to douse your cart in the stuff, just enough to clean off the dirt and dust. You rub it across both sides of the connector pins on the cart. Then you let the alcohol evaporate.

Then blast the cart port on your console with canned air.

Sometimes old carts will take a few tries to boot, anyway, too. Just the nature of old, non-refurb consoles.

Early 3D consoles had very fucked up architecture.
Playstation had no Z-buffer and an odd way of rendering polys.
Saturn had multiple CPUs and GPUs, and quad primitives.
N64 had tons of bottlenecks everywhere and used microcode which is glitchy with HLE and expensive with LLE.

>> No.2141195

>>2141105
Actually, PlayStation emulation has been the best so far in terms of rendering using new technologies and compatibilities. When it comes to a few micro-discrepancies like Final Fantasy where a hack is needed it's been relative to those type of games only.

On the other hand, Nintendo 64 emulation is still spotty as hell and requires CPUs with enough bandwidth to chug all that unoptimized code. Most N64 emulators handle popular games really well though but there are a few lesser known games like Star Soldier Vanishing Earth or Knife Edge: Nose Gunner that varies per emulator.

Dreamcast got to the working state really fast minus 2D textures/sprites flickering or glitching in the case of Reicast for Android.

Banjo Kazooie is an ok game but there are some poor level design that really keeps it from being a great game. Like the things where it punishes you simply for doing what the games wants you to do (that fucking shark). And don't hide behind "retro games are SUPPOSED to be hard, first off, that isn't true, second off that is used an excuse for shitty level design so often that it pisses me off Nostalgial alone doesnt make a game great. Also I think Banjo-Tooie was an awful game and I'm not going to explain why, you all know why but you are denying it.

...why is that such a big deal? He's only a problem if you're in the water for a long time and there's like what, one jiggy and a few notes in the water? And he's completely avoidable in Rusty Bucket Bay (but that's pretty idealistic) Sure, the level design isn't perfect, but it's not unfair.
