ITT we post games that everyone thinks they suck, but they actually don't.

Take this for example, because of AVGN everyone thinks it sucks as much as LJN games but it was actually done by Sunsoft, it has amazing graphics for the NES, parallax scrolling (something that the NES was supposedly incapable of), it has that heavenly Sunsoft music and the gameplay is nowhere near as frustrating as the nerd said, it's in fact more forgiving than the first batman game on the NES.

The same goes for the GB version; instead of being just a watered down port, it's a completely original game, the controls are not frustrating at all, the grappling hook if better (IMHO) than the one in bionic commando and again, the music, what can I say, it Sunsoft, just listen:

Also, this one.
It's often regarded as one of the worst games of all time because of the stupid "All your base" meme, but the games is actually good.

I mean, it's not R-type or Gradius good, but it's pretty good.

And the music, just damn:

>parallax scrolling (something that the NES was supposedly incapable of)

It is incapable of parallax scrolling, at least 'true' scrolling. True parallax scrolling requires at least two background layers to work, while the NES only had one. How RotJ did it is by animating the background areas by looking as if they were moving, such as the clouds in the first stage. One other method other NES games often employed was by splitting the image horizontally and setting each portion to scroll at a slower speed than the other; this system here is pretty much how the trainer battles work in Pokemon, the opponent is one half of the background scrolling right, the player is the other half of the background (with sprites for part of his hat) scrolling left.

Sword Master and Metal Storm both showcase the "flipbook" method of 'parallax' scrolling, the method wherein the background is animated with new graphics to appear it is moving. Notice the repeating patterns of the mountains and trees.

Sword Master seems to have a pretty good assortment of colors in that screenshot. It'd be even better if they used blue for the menu items inside the gold menu, rather than gold for everything. Then again, that would change from stage to stage, because of background palette differences.

This goes over the backgrounds/tiling in Sunsoft's Batman. I've played and I certainly agree its one of the best looking games on the NES. If I remember right, AVGN really didn't go into that game much. And, honestly, I've never seen the game discussed anywhere where it wasn't at least praised for its pixel art and anyone who knows shit about pixel art is likely going to have respect for the game.

>>2084035
Don't even start that shit. It's just the translation. Honestly becaue it's a meme, it is gonna stay know and more people are gonna play it out of curiosity. I did and found it was a pretty servicable shmup.Nothing specular, but I've had fun with it.

They kinda couldn't since the NES lays colors out for backgrounds in 16*16 areas, at least by default. The menu bar is entirely the same color because of the border. To get a better grasp of what I'm saying, look at the trees. Notice how there's a square that uses a different color from the leaves. Notice how the grass sits directly above the ground.

I found Deadly Towers to be pretty good, not amazing, but good and yet it usually gets on top ten worst games of all time (the game only sucks if you get stuck in the labyrinth)... It's a fun little action/RPG...

Also Dick Tracey was a fun action game where you couldn't shoot the unarmed baddies (like in real life), with colorful characters ideal for a video game and some minor detective work... and responsive controls.

It's because it didn't utilize the PS1's hardware capabilities at all. If you look up anyone shitting on it they are usually making claims like the same exact game could have been done on the SNES. Granted I don't think it's fair to claim that it's the all time worst even if it's just in the genre but it's understandable why people disliked it when it came out.

i remember this game well. wouldnt say i hated it completely.. i mean i beat it twice.. but what irritated me the most is the high encounter rate, the enemies were pretty annoying to fight.. and the worst part.. long annoying puzzles with no break on encounters. lots of backtracking and etc. cant remember quite clearly but i think healing is limited too. otherwise its kinda fun, class changing is pretty rad, akin to sd3, but not as deep.
