Let's talk about Outrun!

I recently got 3D Outrun and have been enjoying it a lot, the high-speed action is amazing.

Being a huge OR2/2SP fan I thought it was about time to start playing the original too, but it sure is hard! I'm slowly progressing, but do you have any helpful advice for a complete beginner?

Not flooring the gas while gearing up seems to be the most obvious tip, but what about stuff like breaking? Should I be pumping the brakes?

Is handling the curves just a matter of playing enough to learn what entry speed you should have, or can a skilled-enough player always get through at full throttle by following the best lines?

Some corners require you to slow down, and those will increase in frequency at later parts of the routes. I'd worry more about drivers on the road; both OutRun and Super Hang-On would be much easier without 'em. It's funny that, for arcade gamers in 1986, OutRun was considered leisurely, a walk in the park, but it can take some time to beat and then master still.

Until I can download 3DS OutRun, Cannonball is a wondrous reverse-engineering of the original: https://github.com/djyt/cannonball/wiki

>Not flooring the gas while gearing up

You don't have to lift to gear up, you just have to do it before you redline.

That's what I was assuming with my experience from OR2... Guess I'll figure it out if I keep at it.

That I can see! It's probably a much easier game to master than most of everything else that was out in the arcades back then...

It was actually after reading about it on the Cannonball author's blog that I decided to get the 3DS port. I never even use the 3D feature, but on Outrun it's excellent. The extra depth really adds to the speed sensation and makes it easier to judge distance to other cars.

Thank you, that's really good to know!

Also, and this may be me just being a massive pleb, but those hard corners are a lot easier to deal with if you gear down instead of breaking. Gear down, pick your line & lift off til you reach 180, gear back up and accelerate through the turn. Doesn't always work, mind you.

I feel a bit the same, but even if I don't enjoy playing it that much, I appreciate it all the same.

>dat bright red cab
>dem cheerful tunes

Shit's iconic, and it lent a good vibe to whatever place it was in.

Best arcade racing game of all time, especially if you play it in the actual arcade form.

I know that it's not retro, but OutRun 2 is one of my top 10 favorite arcade games of all time. It never fails to be an incredibly fun romp.

Does anyone have a recommended wheel for the PC version?

On the topic of the original, I've only played it a little bit, but it's a strange beast. I think I prefer Space Harrier as far as super scaler games go.

the arcade was the best i live on the nort of Chile, small town in the atacama desert and every summer i just go and play this game with some cold drink and it was a blast i miss the arcades man.

Number 1 for me, it never gets old. Last great Sega game in my opinion.

Wish I had someone to race with.

Passing Breeze > Splash Wave > Magical Sound Shower

Probably the comfiest game of all time. I absolutely love Suzuki's idea that it's a driving game rather than a racing game.

oh, I would *absolutely love* having someone to play with. we should look into reviving the PC version's online. Just today I was looking into fixing the HUD for 16:9 aspect ratios and there's a guy who supposedly patched FFB/xinput feedback support into the game, but sadly made no releases because of health problems he was facing.
