What is the hardest retro game you've beaten, or the game you are most proud of yourself for beating?

Pic related is mine.

Castlevania 1 and 3, I think. There might be more difficult titles I've beat, but this two games had the biggest impact on me.

Contra and Ninja Gaiden but beating Ikagura in one run is the most proud moment after my marriage.

Same here. And Castlevania 3 took me around a month to beat, a bit more at most. But I soon played Super Castlevania 4 and it took 2-3 days of moderate play.

I felt somewhat bad, wish I ha taken my time. Oh well there's always hard mode!

Now I'm doing a warpless run of super mario bros, I've made it to 7-4.

tfw still can't beat Battletoads.

I can't figure out Clinger Wingers. Even with the Game Genie, even with the emulators, even with savescumming.

I've had this cartridge in my possession since 1991 and the gamepad-shaped dents in the drywall to prove it.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the Sega Genesis.

Runner up: Zelda 2. Being able to navigate the Great Palace as a kid without a map, beat that nightmare of a first boss, then winning the Shadow Link fight... I still get grief from my uncle over that, seeing as we used to compete over who could get further in Zelda games.

i've 1cc'd a bunch of games but the most memorable is darius twin for snes. last level is retard-strength hard

>> No.2079865

Mega man 3 single life

I don't know if these games are considered very hard, but:
Bayou Billy
3D battles of world runner
Adv D&D Pool of radiance
8 eyes

On a touch screen phone emulator games that are not RPGs, like Super Metroid or Mega man 2. Holy fuck.

>> No.2079870

>>2079865
Bayou Billy is considered ungodly hard. Pools of Radiance isn't "hard" per se, but it takes enough patience and dedication that you won't find too many people who've beaten it. I've owned it for about a decade and have never gotten around to it.

Pool of radiance beginning is very hard until at least one of your party member levels up. Also the ending part is difficult. I couldn't stress enough the importance of rolling near perfect stats for every party member. Maybe the classes are just a matter of personal preference, I usually go with Fighter - fighter - cleric/fighter - Magic user - Cleric and then get Dirten and never let him go. Overall it's a hard game if you don't know what you're doing - just like you said -, but fun as hell and truely amazing to be on the NES. I don't know if it's my favourite game on the NES but at least top3

Adventures of Lolo 1 & 2 are probably the hardest, but I'm probably "most proud" of beating Mario 2. I don't know why. I don't really get a feeling of accomplishment from beating games, if the difficulty hits a sweet spot and I just barely survive some specific situation or scenario within an inch of my life, I value that moment as cool.

Beat Dragons Lair for the NES, although i'm not sure it's so much "hard" or it just requires an ungodly amount of patience. Felt good seeing the The End screen at any rate.

Other than that i have to say Wizardry 4.

>> No.2080124

Espgaluda. I would say DoDonPachi but I've only cleared the first loop so I don't think it counts. Espgaluda has similar difficulty (slightly easier levels, much harder final boss) but it only has one loop so I've fully completed it.

I beat Knights of the Round Table (arcade version) with a friend of mine in a bar while waiting for the bus coming home from school, we just did with one coin each and we were kinda surprised since we never been particularly pros or whatever. The game is not that difficult but did it 1cc was surprising. It was also surprising the name of the last boss, one of the most important men of my country. We didn't see it coming.

I guess the difficulty setting was set to lower than the default, because the bosses that KotR throws at you are some bullshit. You pretty much had to master the blocking mechanic or get ready to die constantly. At least the SNES port has a separate button for that, the only thing you can do in the arcade version is <- + attack, and god help you if you fuck up the timing.

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo - USA release.

The hardest fighting game AI of all time, even on default difficulty.

It took me forever to discover all the cheap tricks to cheat out the AI.

I am also proud of beating One Whole Unit Blood, not only is it just a hard ass game but it's quite a long FPS and it just felt extremely fulfilling to beat, like I had completed an adventure.

I also beat castlevania 1, but I could never beat Dracula in castlevania 3. I should try to beat it again.

All in all though I don't make it a habit to beat games, I usually just play a lot of them and only beat the ones I really get into.

>Greatest /vr/ achievement

Probably beating picrelated on Expert. By some miracle, I aced both of the bonus rounds and ended up getting an extra continue out of it. If it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't have made it.

>Greatest vidya achievement overall

Beating the PS2 Shinobi on Super mode with Joe Musashi, who's the weakest character of the three. Spent like six hours fighting the final boss alone. Finally beat him at 4 AM, just when I was about to say "fuck it" and hit the sack. Now I feel inferior. My biggest achievement was Earthworm Jim on Normal (which I was very proud of at the time, because it still was really hard for me). Also I think I finished Earthworm Jim 2 on some difficulty too, but I'm not sure if there even were difficulties too. I just remember it being a lot easier, and a bunch of cows in the end.
Also, from non-/vr/ related I finished the original Flash Meat Boy, which is deliberately retro, if that counts (it totally doesn't). Never played the new one, though.
Do Interactive Fiction and adventure games count, though? I also finished the entire Space Quest series and the first two King's Quests. They were hard, but probably not in the sense everybody's speaking about.
