2077948 No.2077948 [Reply] [Original]

So is the PS1 the easiest console to pirate for ever? All you need is a paper clip and a Gameshark to play burned games. I'm building my collection more every day thanks to the laughable security on this baby. But how does it compare to the Dreamcast and Saturn? Are other CD consoles as easy to pirate for as PS1?

CD-based piracy general

>> No.2077965

No, based on your criteria the SegaCD is.

>> No.2077967

The gameshark trick only works on early PS1's as far as I know, and I've heard of compatibility issue.

By far the easiest consoles to pirate for are the 3DO and Sega CD. They straight up play burned games just as they would a legit copy. The Dreamcast works similarly, but a regular CD can't hold as much as a GD-ROM so in many case you have to sacrifice FMV's, music, or voice audio (in the case of Shenmue) to play a burned copy.

>> No.2077971

>>2077948
No. Consoles that don't even need the gameshark or paper clip are easier.

>> No.2077974

Sega CD and Dreamcast are both burn-and-play consoles.

There's barely any games to play on the Sega CD that are worthwhile.

that being said, the PC Engine CD is the same regarding burned discs, and has a great deal more worthwhile titles to play

Goodluck burning a game on a cdr that a ps can read, let alone the low speeds they must be burned at, most modern cd burners burn too fast, like minimum 8x...

>> No.2078048

Do you say that because everyone does or do you genuinely not like the games?

PCE discs are even easier as they don't have regions

you prolly never burned a ps1 game correctly in your life, in the slight chance i am wrong, id like to know cause ive tried many kinds of cdr's as well as the slowest speeds i can get from my cdrom... i heard the verbatims are the best

>> No.2078119

>>2078108
Not the guy you're replying to, but I've never had a problem with any burned CD in a PSX. Also, the burn speed doesn't matter as long as you don't burn at a variable speed.

DVDs are a little trickier.

>So is the PS1 the easiest console to pirate for ever?
Sega CD and Turbo CD don't have any protection whatsoever. Dreamcast also has a very easily-exploited BIOS flaw that renders its protection useless.

All my games are burned. Don't burn slow, that's old folk wisdom that isn't true anymore. If your burner is from the past ~8 years, burn as fast as possible. Prop a paper clip between the top of the PlayStation and the little button to trick it into thinking it's closed, put in a gameshark, and swap it with the burned game when it tells you to. Easier than fuck.

>> No.2078126

>>2078108
How do you manage to fuck this up? Just buy a spindle of Taiyo discs and burn at the recommended speed.

PS1 is not really easy unless you have a first rev console. After that it's mods or swap tricks with the latter requiring know how and good timing.

Not sure what you're doing wrong. It's about as simple as it gets. I use whatever cheap discs I happen to have laying around and imgburn at whatever the default speed is. Never messed with any settings and never had a problem

Are there any consoles that you can't pirate for, be it with softmods, flash carts, burned discs, modchips, etc?

>> No.2078229

>>2078196
It's very difficult to pirate Neo-Geo games due to the insane architecture of the system. You'd need the hardware equivalent of 4 or 5 "normal" flash cartridges to make it work.

You don't try to spoof the copy protection with the disc, retard. You install a mod chip that injects the signal onto the CD controller directly, and then burn any normal CD-R.

only the first model can play burned cd-rs without issue.

All Dreamcasts have copy protection. In fact, GD ROMs are weird as hell. Just look at the bottom of a legit Dreamcast game. The thing is that their copy protection had a bug in it.

>> No.2078901

With saturn, you technically just need to learn how to swap discs. You need 1 legit game, and the timing is a pain in the ass when you really just want to boot it up. I just got a modchip for that, fuck it.

dreamcast *had* security, contrary to popular belief, but people found a way around it by making it think it was loading music off a CD rather than booting a game. End result is piracy without needing any tricks, softmods, or hardware modchips.

The only reason you can just burn a disc is because someone else already put a lot of effort into ripping and converting it. If you had an original game you wanted to copy you wouldn't even know where to start.

I've always wanted a Sega CD since I was little. If I got one and wanted to play Lunar or Sonic CD, would I just download a ROM of the game and burn it to a CD? Or is there something else I would need to do?

if your sega cd doesn't power up first thing to check is the board fuse. it takes a center-negative power supply and often times people just plug in whatever fits within the specs and blow the fuse
