>> No.2075679

>>2075602
thats the topic of the thread, if anything is getting translated though its going to be RPGs, Adventure games, and action games. Probably the action games first and RPGs last, dating sims are far more niche than any of those genres.

>> No.2075697

>>2075581

It's not an adventure game, that's a dating sim focused mostly on stats.

>>2074207

Well, there is Cross Tantei Monogatari and I also liked the Kindaichi Shounen game on Saturn, even though it plays like a visual novel there are many options and you have to think carefully the assasinations and of course there are mini games where you have to carry them.

>> No.2077026

>>2074915
Not recently, anyway, and the X68k having better development resources/emulation means people would rather hack and translate games on that platform (same with MSX vs. PC-88).

>>2075428
No, it's x86-compatible, so assembly documentation is good. But there are unique hardware elements that need documentation in English. Games of sufficiently high complexity will be more difficult to hack.

>>2075679
This ain't what OP intended to discuss, lol. Action games need translation least—people just want to know the controls, as backstory/plot isn't often a strong point. VNs are Japanese adventure games, too, even if older Japanese adventures from devs like Riverhill Soft have more visible mechanics. RPGs definitely get more attention, which I don't mind, but they're also more difficult to hack than most VNs/adventures.

I find PC-98 emulation a lot more practical than x68k emulation. I'm not even aware that people translated x68k ports of PC-98 games or many x68k games in general.
Most MSX translations were done years ago.

>> No.2077073

>>2077060
The most recent translation I can think of for the X68k is Die Bahnwelt from Glodia. People working on The 4th Unit's translation chose the X68k version for various reasons, but who knows if that'll ever finish.

Action games get translated first because of the lack of text they are easy starting projects for people. Starting right on RPGs is far too ambitious.

>> No.2077776

>>2077760
True, since most action games have Japanese text near their beginnings and ending. As for RPGs, depends on amount/complexity of text and barriers to hacking (not to mention people classify "RPGs" differently, so a Zelda-ish game like Borfes and Five Witches might get included).

How much would I miss by playing the PC-98 original of Doukyuusei instead of later ports?

>> No.2080624

>>2080524

It depends on which of the later ports... still if you want to get the retro feel just play the original.

The original Doukyuusei had many ports and remakes.

>Doukyuusei (PC-Engine). It adds some characters that were originally intended to be on the original game but never made it. This version was the first one to actually introduce voice acting in the franchise. It has some small changes in the dialogue here and there but no biggie. It also lacks the interactive hentai sections, but you get some descriptions and some light nudes.

>Doukyuusei If (Sega Saturn). It's pretty much the same as Doukyuusei for PC-Engine, it has better graphics and the voices were rerecorded for this game.

>Doukyuusei (Windows remake). This remake was released in the late 90's and some people actually don't like some of the changes Elf introduced. They tried to add some complexity into the characters (for today standards they can be charming, but they are quite plain). This port has enhanced graphics and it's almost completely voiced.

>Doukyuusei (DMM edition). Well, this one is a special edition made for the site DMM, it features the graphics from the Windows remake but it keeps everything as in the original PC-98 version. Of course it doesnt have voices. There is a DMM version of the Windows remake too, since the original doesnt work too well on newer systems.

Not exactly a pure dating sim per se, it's more of an adventure game that also incorporates sex into the story, but it isn't as hamfisted as most eroges. Except for some scenes

>> No.2081705

>>2081679
It's not a dating sim at all, then again neither is Katawa Shoujo.

For translated retro dating sims your options are basically True Love, Pia Carrot, Casual Romance Club, May Club and Bloody Bride.

>> No.2081726

>>2081705
It's a dating sim in a sense that you go on dates, and even though the story doesn't focus specifically on banging the girls, you follow each girls' specific routes and it ends up happening. It doesn't have the stats or anything, but it very loosely fits the genre. Kinda.
I assume this is a discussion as old as the internet itself, but I don't think it's that much of a stretch calling it that as long as put it with a grain of salt.

>> No.2081790

Sometimes I wonder why did the adventure is still somewhat relevant only in Japan now? I mean, there are western adventures, but they just aren't in the same quantity, if I'm seeing right.
Why did adventure become really niche in the West, while still being somewhat popular niche in Japan?
Am I even right in my reasoning?

>> No.2081805

>>2081726
Eh, I accept "Dating Sim" as a term (though very begrudgingly) if the game has a very heavy focus on Romance or if there are SOME form of relationship mechanics even if simple (such as in Sakura Taisen, Galaxy Angels or Riviera: The Promised Land) but calling Yu-No a Dating Sim is a huge stretch because it really doesn't fit those categories.

It's a mystery adventure game.

>>2081790
Japan's gaming industry seems much more skilled at fulfilling niches, compared to Western which seems to be either complete AAA chasing or complete indie with very little in-between.

I don't know if you can really say it's relevant in Japan though.

>> No.2081806

>>2081790
I think Grim Fandango being a huge investment for LucasArts and ending up dead in the water discouraged them to try it ever again, they really just didn't sell. Nowadays we've seen a resurface of a new style of western adventure games with TellTale's Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us (like it or not, Gone Homo also contributed to this second wave popularity among the hipster crowd), so if we're lucky Adventure games in the west might just catch a second wind.

>> No.2081818

>>2081806
Lucas reduced adventures to comedy.
Point and click worked out poorly for consoles and adapting a direct control worked out poorly for adventures which meant that adventures got screwed by the push to 3D.

>> No.2081823

>>2081818
I do agree, that LucasArt/Sierra gigantic actions menu just doesn't work with consoles.
I think TellTales recently is doing a good job with the input mechanics for 3D adventure games, the sequences where we walk around and interact with the world works pretty good, it's just such a shame the games are so linear and with non-existent exploration.
