Normally called "survival horror" games. I'm really nostalgic for those kinds of games. I want to play more in that genre. It's mostly that I just like exploring and escapism. They have these elements:

>A spooky mansion setting where you continue to explore, and have to figure out where to go
>Alternatively could be a series of spooky mansions
>most of the game takes place in said mansion
>3rd person perspective with set camera angles
>ability to examine non-vital objects which give descriptions
>very pretty backgrounds and environments
>atmospheric music

I've played:
>Resident Evil series
>Silent Hill series
>Parasite Eve II
>Devil May Cry

RE favors the single "spooky mansion" setting, while Silent Hill tends to favor multiple shorter spooky mansions.

Can anyone recommend me other games like this? I'm nostalgic for the genre but have plaid those above games far too much.

>>2070243

A lot of the appeal of those games is the setting myself. My top Spooky mansions:

1. Police Station - RE2
2. Dollet Island mansion - DMC
3. Mansion - RE Remake
4. Mansion - RE1.

RE3 lacks a single nice place you stay at, which kinda hurts it a bit in my eyes. It spends a lot of time in urban or industrial areas too.

You could play Alone in the Dark, I guess; that's the grandpappy of RE-model Survival Horror games (though kids these days like to romanticize the genre by setting Sweet Home as the 'true' precursor, because of BAKA GAIJIN).
It's got tank controls, tons of objects and puzzles, eldritch abominations, the works.

A bit lacking on visuals-based atmosphere, though. The whole setting is lit like a supermarket.

I forgot about those games. Yes, very interesting from a historical standpoint. It's like seeing the first Silent era films to do things for the first time.

Illbleed would be spooky a series of spooky theme park attractions instead of a mansion, and is a fun game along with a great parody. The true ending is hilariously demented so I hope you play through it long enough for it.

First person instead of third person, but Masion of Hidden Souls on the Sega CD and teh sequel THE Mansion on Hidden Souls on the Saturn fits this very well. They'd both generally simplistic adventure games but they excel in atmosphere. It wouldn't surprise me if the first game had influenced D a lot, but it doesn't have the cannibalism and all that D does.

The Saturn game has a better story, but everyone you talk to is a floating head.

Oh I should mention they're all in CGI FMVs, though you actually move like you should in a full 3d. It'd argue it's the best heavy use of FMVs even though that's barely saying anything.

honestly I thought I was the only person who likes the guy, if you check reviews online (both pro and amateur), everyone will tell you it's shit.

I think it's the first console FMV game, though I'm not sure.

however I don't like the saturn version at all. It just comes off as awkward.

If you like point and click adventure games then you might try the Laura Bow series, although it's more murder mystery than survival horror. The first one takes place in an old bayou mansion and the second one in a museum after closing.

For its tech limitations, Haunted House on Atari 2600 did a pretty decent job with atmosphere. Especially on some of the higher-level games with locked doors and darkened rooms.

>> No.2075393

>>2073013
I understand why. It's niche, it's short/easy, has horrid voice acting, it has FMVs, and it's on the Sega CD. However, I think it aimed at doing somehting simple; make you feel like you're exploring a haunted house, and I think it did it well. The game made for a comfy Halloween night when I played it. So, yeah, I think I think it's a curiosity worth checking out for people into horror games and adventure games.

As for comparing the two games, when it's butteflies and disembodied voices, that makes it feel more ghost like and creepy. In the Saturn games, you just have those ugly heads that look out of place, but not in a creepy way and just look bad. I definitely prefer the original, but I still thought the second game was worth mentioning, at least so people stop getting the two mixed up.

However, they're not different versions. Same premise, basically, but they're technically totally different games.

Another simular game is Juggernaut on the PS1. It's obviously far more Myst influenced. You're basically sent inside your girlfriend's soul... which takes the form of a mansion and the land around it to save it from being taken to hell by the devil. I actually don't like this one, but I have friends who do, and I can see a sort of cheesy charm to it.

The mansion in Castlevania 64 spooks me. I'm currently playing it and the vampire posing as a townsman in need of help makes me rethink about trusting Vincent. The maze seems pretty cool and I don't know what to think about Malus. Sure, he's suspicious as fuck.I met him after that incident with the vampire and his goddamn name is Malus. It's about as subtle as having the devil in disguise calling himself Samuel Atan. But maybe that's a red herring, since it seems a little too obvious.
Also, Rosa, the vampire lady who takes care of the roses, is cute and I like her.

It was a completely nice RE-clone game with some jrpg mechanics and stats. I value it on that level. I played it many times including Nightmare mode. At the time, I really wanted another RE game.

>and how vastly superior PE1 is in comparison. Shit fucking rules.

Well, yeah, I like it a lot, for different reasons. I wish there had been a true sequel to Parasite Eve. One that builds upon its battle system. PE1 feels like some first step in some new interesting battle system that was never explored.

Game puts me to sleep. Tried playing it 3 times. The lab setting is just pretty bland and boring. Labs were always the least interesting parts of RE games. But they got into a strict formula and they feel they can't abandon them. RE games would be so much better without them.

How? In my opinion it's a good game, severely underrated and much better than the recent 3D Castlevanias. It has some great atmosphere and although it has some flaws, I thoroughly enjoy playing the game.

>> No.2078656

>Juggernaut
This is a really obscure first-person horror adventure for the PS1. It's not survival horror since the game consists solely of solving challenging puzzles, but you might want to give it a try.

>Martian Gothic: Unification
This is another underlooked PS1 survival horror that appeared in the wake of RE's popularity. You play as three astronauts on Mars infected by an alien virus. Basically they cannot be near each other or they fuse into a grotesque monster ("unification") and it's Game Over. So you're constantly switching between the characters, helping each other solve puzzles and progress from a distance. There's also a PC version.

>Galerians
This one has a neat dystopian sci-fi atmosphere that reminds of something like Akira. You play as a boy with psychic powers who survives by taking drugs. Everyone you meet is a junkie or wants to kill you. If you use your powers too much, you enter an overdrive mode where you just walk around making people's heads explode. It's unbalanced in the sense that running or avoiding enemies is ALWAYS a better idea than using your powers, but it's great otherwise.

>Carrier
This is just Resident Evil on an airship, for the DreamCast. But hey, it's solid.

I politely disagree with you on the RE lab parts. Although I see how the game would loose its charm if the it was labs and labs all the way, these particular parts are a mere touch of how serious shit is about to get. Like how you're not only meeting accidentally created enemies now, but the real biohazard weapons.

It would only bore me if these parts were too long and they aren't.

Ultimately no. It has some nice ideas, but the combat is poor, it's goofy, and the exeution isn't perfect. A remake could be great.

It's a spooky mansion game for sure, and it has a LOT taken from Resident Evil. My first impression upon playing is that it feels like Resident Evil, but with action controls.

It does a lot of the same kind of horror and suspension about RE I liked a lot. Also the game over screen is the same as RE2 (death animation with "you died"). It does try to be spooky and scary. It doesn't really succeed, but it adds a lot of atmosphere to the game. The RE influence is obvious and hard to deny. It's a shame that later DMC games removed or toned down the horror and RE elements.

Oh no shit. You can make a retsupurae of FFVII and make it look like the worst rpg ever. It's the entire point of those kind of videos. I hate it because it ends up pushing people away from games that are far from perfect but can still entertain. Also they were never really funny to begin with.

There are some undoubtably cheesy/goofy parts of Gallariens. Thing is though, that's pretty par for course for early 3D games, made from 1994-2000.
