New Umihara Kawase thread again because starting the other one with a webm with a black image as a preview was a bad idea.

What's the best game and field in the series?

>BTW, does the 30 minute rule still apply to the PS1 and DS Umihara Kawase?
It does in the DS version, I was kicked into the last field several times after spending too much time on some pre-crab fields.

>> No.2070467

>>2070169
Yes, I have no idea if it's in the 3DS one though.

>> No.2070836

I used to be pretty good

When I played Umihara Kawase Shun I was able to loop myself around to the first level in about 24 minutes or so

didn't seem to find an actual ending door with credits like the SNES version, maybe I just didn't keep at it enough

I'd get absorbed in the more insane time eating levels with long trap corridors or slide shenanigans

>> No.2070842

>>2069159
I think one of my favorite fields is the one in SNES with the bridge that breaks, you can attach your line to the end of it as it swings to increase your momentum and fling yourself to the upper right corner where there's a ledge you can't even see unless you launch yourself that way, with a secret exit door to boot

I also really liked how some of the fields were like, other fields flipped completely upside down, so you'd die if you didn't throw your line with perfect timing at the start, because you'd fall off the top (bottom?) of the map

>> No.2071523

>>2070842
I think you're mixing two levels up. There is one with a breakable bridge, but the level with the hidden door at the very top right is in one of the school of fish boss levels.

This thing saved me from a lot of grievances, you don't need 100MB+ files to listen to old games OSTs, who are probably going to be ultra-compressed, it's way better having foobar or winamp synthesising the music on the fly, it sounds better and for the most part each song isn't more than a couple of measly KB.

How would you like your credit? I put my own name in ASCII to an unreferenced part of the ROM so if you open the ROM in a Hex Editor, you might see who's behind the hack.

>> No.2104857

>>2104845
I was gonna say put my name in the readme file, but you make it sound like you don't have a readme. Don't just hide your name inside the ROM, that's way too humble. Okay the hack's done. Not much to say here, but a few things:
• The doors no longer have effect on your path. This hack essentially makes you play through all 49 levels. This is the main 'thing' of the hack.
• Because the game is now way longer, to compensate the added challenge the 30-minute rule is no longer there (thanks, Princess Sevenleaf) and you start with 50 lives.
• Two of the unused enemies (the Puffer Fish and the Catfish) are featured in their respective levels. You have to play 'til you find them though.
• Save the hack and the next time someone makes a UK thread or a Rom Hacking thread, post the link. I usually don't keep things too long so if my mediafire account gets deleted or shit just dropbox it or something.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/855s2bw6dog6pav/Umihara_Kawase_2_Journey.smc

Sure, the game's now as linear as it gets, but at the same time it's the ultimate sightseeing and a tough challenge. I expect you to post your final scores.

Oh my god, this game brings on the ultimate nostalgia for me. Back in 1994 me and my father moved to japan for the winter because of some business deal his work made or something. First week there we mostly had fun going to the fishing ponds and some of the arcades in the morning and then walking around trying to get to know the area. Few days later after coming home from temp school dad started telling me about a cool game system that was like a home arcade machine called a Super Famicom that he heard about at his new job. Started to beg for one for christmas as the days went on. Then comes the 22nd. After fishing at a pond I'm told I have to stay up super late tonight for an un-told reason. Around 11 at night I'm told to get my stuff on and get into the car. Half an hour later we stop at a store that stays open late and sells games. We walk around a bit and look a some games and beg to get a few. Finally at midnight we get in line and I jump for joy when my dad had the clerk grab a sfc off the shelf and Super Mario World. The Clerk also pulled out a big shipping box and out came a copy of Umihara Kawase. Needless to say we spent the whole next day playing Umihara and Mario. Best early Christmas ever.

I have the DS version and it is the best version of both the SFC and PSX games. Slowdown present in the SFC game has been removed and now the timer measures to centiseconds. It has a remixed soundtrack, however, and some songs now play in different levels. The PSX game had a few doors and levels added to it, and the map on the bottom screen is helpful. Pretty much the only downside is the lower resolution.

Me too. It makes the whole game seem somber and kinda cold. Like a dreary overcast autumn day.

I think that's a big part of what drew me into the game initially, was its palette choices. You rarely see those kind of "earthy" colors in a game from that era, usually it's about making everything as flashy and colorful as possible.

New to Umihara Kawase. I recently bought Sayonara Umihara Kawase on the eShop and I've been enjoying it so far.

Though, I was wondering how is this player able to latch onto the upper platform in this video around the 9 second mark? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQr4o-6zOWU

Is it because he has momentum before he jumps? I can't seem to reach it while I'm jumping.

You see how around the 11-12 second mark of the video, when he shoots his line while he's still in the air and once he lands he jumps again pretty much straight away? That's how he was able to reach it.

Not as fast, but you can also stand on the right side of that platform, jump, shoot your line diagonally right at the very top of the jump and jump again immediately after landing, and if you've timed everything right you'll reach it.

GIF has limited palette too. The dithering used in the graphics just reminds me a lot of the common GIF dithering artifacts.
I mean, I think it's far more likely for the devs to have had software that can downsample photos to 16-color GIFs which they then converted to the SNES 1555 BGR format with their own algos. Rather than have their own custom photo2snes software with custom dithering algorithms.

I wouldn't mind too much, as long as Umihara herself is still in the game. It would be upsetting if they replaced Umi with a boy, though.

get ISO, mount it, check out each file individually.
Mind you, I ripped every sprite in the game straight from the ISO and didn't find anything unusual: http://www.spriters-resource.com/playstation/umiharakawaseshun/

iirc the names of the sprite files were dead obvious so ripping them was easy. I didn't check the "level" files though, so maybe if the game has 50 levels and you find 55 files in the level folder, you've struck gold. I've never played the game.

Absolutely stunning video. It shows that you really know what you're doing and put in a good amount of effort.

I hope you won't mind if I give a couple of comments as a layman.
A low opacity bounding box around the viewport of the player might be a good way to give immediate explanation to the enemies phasing in and out of existence. It also shows with how little the player actually had to work with during the game.
The flickering water distracts a bit from the gameplay. It's of course a problem with the emulation software, but it might be solved with a de-flicker plugin in After Effects.
Because of the way the maps are ripped, a door appears behind every opened door instead of the usual monochrome background. Since this can't be helped without ripping every map again and editing the doors out of the sprite layer, it might be an idea to replace the doors in the background with a black square.

All in all, you did a great job. I would completely understand if you feel like you are done with the project, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

>> No.2194585

>>2194518
Thanks.
yeah, to be honest, I do feel it's a bit rushed. In retrospect, I could've just made a camera hack that forces the viewport to the top left corner, dump video, top right corner, dump video, etc. And stitch the vids together.

Or even made a 960x540 "full levels" of each field, like in field 57.

I appreciate your feedback. Maybe I'll do Shun next :)

You got me interested so I looked into the files.
There's a large file called U3MAP.bin which I'm pretty sure is level data.
It contains 65 headers with offset and size attributes. How many levels are there in the game in total?

>> No.2194830

>>2194797
There's 53 fields in Second Edition, 3 less in the original one.
Some of these could be used for tutorials that are shown before the levels but that still doesn't add up for the 65 headers you found, pretty interesting!

Also what do you use to open these files? Good old PowerISO has failed me and I also didn't manage to open the .str or .xa files which should contain videos used in the game. This would be especially useful for that ending movie which you can't see fullscreen normally.

>> No.2194851

I'm a macfag, I used "The Unarchiver" on the BIN (the CUE is useless)
According to http://www.alles.or.jp/~akfy/ there are 50 unique fields, so you're right about that.

Also, I've confirmed that these indeed ARE level data. There are also eight instances in the header thats' sizes are 0 bytes. They're all duplicates though.

So, how to find possible unused levels:
• Going through each pointer, checking if there are any fields that are never really read by the game.
• With deduction, narrow down the data that is never being pointed to. Create pointer, get level.

Hey thanks, this is really interesting.
Was playing around with the game-over fish a bit and made fixed the little animation.
I hope it's right, as I haven't seen it in the game.

I was actually wondering this too. This field is giving me much more trouble than it should, especially after conquering the infamous field 42.

I just managed to do it few mins ago, you wanna catch the whole first wave after spawning at the right under conveyor belt. Then move to the middle platform at bottom and after 2nd wave spawns you should be able to catch 2 fish easily. The ones at the end of V symbol I think. Then go up the ladder fall down and catch another bunch, all while they are still somewhat following you in this sorta circle.

After catching whole 2nd wave I started panicking so I went back under the conveyor belt at right, let them get a bit momentum towards me, get back on the middle platform while getting like 2 of them luckily and then repeat previous tactics. Then I managed to die in the next field since I had no more lives -_-

Doubt this makes sense but good luck!

I'm glad that UmiKawa has some fans. I picked up the PS1 game maybe ten years ago. Once in a while, on ye olde /v/, we'd get decent threads at night. The fact that there are still new games coming out, in English even, is pretty amazing to me (tbh I had no idea until i visited this thread). I might have to get me a 3ds one of these days.

Look cute but the hairstyle is a bit off.

Not that it really matters, I can't imagine it being quite difficult to make the hair of a 2D character into 3D.

Also, can't get to the damn backpack of field 17 in Sayonara, the one that's up in a little icy ledge behind the door.

Just get a vita! It has an expanded version of the game coming out that runs at 60fps instead of 30, and includes the original Umihara Kawase as well.

The PS1 version of Shun (2nd eedition) is on PSN, so you have the whole trilogy playable on a great screen + d-pad.

>> No.2260103

>>2259332
The DS version of Shun has a few more fields though.

>> No.2260156

to expand a bit

DS
+ 8 new fields
+ tutorial (in japanese)
+ Practice mode is much better overall, being more clear and also showing individual time for each door
+ can exchange replays wirelessly

PSN
+ diagonal aims are easier to perform thank to R2, L2 buttons, have to be binded through options menu on DS
+ bigger resolution (although DS can achieve the same with zoomed out picture)

Not a big deals though, it's great that one can have all the games in series on both 3DS and Vita

I never got to touch the original 3DS but XL's one is ultra solid imo, clicky and all that. Even playing something like BlazBlue feels really good on XL, definitely can't be said about Dualshock 3 or 4 where I can't pull off simple combos.

I've played these games for many, many hours and I still can't wrap my head around the grab mechanic. What exactly determines when you can or cannot grab a ledge while swinging like pic related? Am I just stupid?

The lure is a physical object so it can get in your way sometimes. Just release it before you're about to grab the ledge and it should work.

>> No.2262436

That makes sense, thanks. I'll try it out next time I play. The lack of consistency with the grabs has always been a problem for me and killed a lot of "this feels cool" moments.

How do you make the giant tadpole use the 3 jumps + tacke attack, it seems so random

>> No.2264179

Holy shit this thread has been going for months.

>> No.2264321

>>2264159
After the tadpole turns around after having dropped the frog(s), it will start the three jumps once it sees you. You want to make sure you dodge the jumps in a way that leaves you on the platform with the exit door after its third jump, and makes it face you after its third jump while still being in the lower platform. Then, it will try to tackle you.

I have good and bad news.
The good news is that the Umihara Kawase time attack section is now accepting submissions at http://kawasefan.net/time-attack/umihara-kawase There are rankings for each field/door as well as each ending. No one will bother with the F28 ending because only accessible via 30 minute rule but it's still there because why not.
The bad news is that so far there has only been one submission, so you'll have to wait for enough submissions to see how your times rank.
