F-Zero X by a huge margin. As in, I wouldn't even have an N64 if the game didn't exist.

Second place Hexen 64, which I always liked better than the out of the box PC version. The N64 blurry smoothing helps this game, preventing the shifting pixels that made my head hurt. Controls well on the N64 pad, too.

isn't it the same way with other consoles, though?

Sure, we already know the N64's library isn't as extensive as SNES or PS1, and that it doesn't have a big array of RPGs and fighters.... but, being honest, it's always the same 20 games posted in every other console's "best of" thread.

There may be hipsters who like obscure games, but for the most part, it's always the same 20 or so games that lead every console's "must play" list.

>> No.2059854

Star Fox 64, first game I ever asked my parents to buy for me. Shits so full of replay value I still do a challenge run every year.

Smash Bros and Mario Kart are endless fun, but i think newer entries outshine them a bit.

F-Zero X and Sin and punishment are top tier for me.

Only recently picked up Wave Race but it's already looking like it could be one of my favorites.

I think Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask are horrible and boring that I can't even finish them. I much prefer Twilight Princess.

I legitimately forgot that Conker's was on the N64. My friends and I rented that from Blockbuster and played it for 31 straight hours, passing the controller around, and we hadn't even found multiplayer yet, we were just beating the story.

To be honest, he is a shitposter but he has a point: Many people gave up on nintendo because of the n64.
Back in the day most kids in high school and middle or even elementary school had ps1. I have no idea why on internet everyone says they had n64 and they barely mention the ps1. Seriously, before the internet I could swear for each 10 ps1 there would be 1 n64.
Somehow, after emulation and youtube "retrochannels" got popular everyone became a n64 kid.

PSX was both a superior console with a superior library than N64 and it was more popular.

N64 was the beginning of Nintendo's decline because most people saw it being cemented as a "kiddie system", and that's when Nintendo Power subscriptions tanked.

N64 gets way more love today by the kiddies with their YouTubes and Vine than actual people back in the day.

It shows how bizarre the retconning of retrogaming is and how many people legitimately pretend to be a lot older than they are.

Then you're deluded or have memory issues if you can't remember the praise the N64 got.

As someone who owned all 3 major 5th gen systems back in the day I can say I never got my N64 collecting dust, never. PS1 had a lot of games (and I could play a LOT of them due to piracy), while on N64 I was limited to shelling out a good chunk of money for 1 game, or renting them. But I ended up using my N64 a lot more than my Ps1, especially due to multiplayer games.
PS1 is the king of 5th gen and nobody is denying that, it took Sega's place, but the N64 was still huge deal.

I didn't say N64 wasn't important but it was clearly second place and as serious gamers a lot of people ended up buying a PSX mostly to deal with the fact that major releases would sometimes come to a grueling crawl... That and RPGs.

The thing I was trying to say is that according to the internet's retcon the N64 was way more popular than the PSX mostly due to emulation and YouTube.

N64 had an impressive fucking launch (if memory serves right, the biggest launch in history up until that point) but I personally remember in school that so many kids that cut their teeth on the NES and SNES switched sides because the N64 was "kiddie".

But to reiterate, the PSX was both more popular and had a better library of games than the N64 but somehow gets less cred than the Sega Saturn... Outside of RPGs it's treated almost as a footnote. And despite a clear second place, N64 gets ten times the love.

>> No.2064419

I think you're having a very distorted idea of what "the internet" as a whole says. Also you need to remember the internet is made up of a lot of different people with different opinions.

>I didn't say N64 wasn't important but it was clearly second place and as serious gamers a lot of people ended up buying a PSX mostly to deal with the fact that major releases would sometimes come to a grueling crawl... That and RPGs.

"serious gamers" would have been idorts, same as how serious gamers would have owned a Genesis and a SNES the gen before that. And of course a PC. If you didn't own a N64 you were missing a good chunck of the best games of mid-late 90s.

>The thing I was trying to say is that according to the internet's retcon the N64 was way more popular than the PSX mostly due to emulation and YouTube.

The "internet's retcon"? Do you have any source on that? I don't think anybody would deny the PS1's popularity and clear dominance during 5th gen, what are you smoking?

>but I personally remember in school that so many kids that cut their teeth on the NES and SNES switched sides because the N64 was "kiddie".

So? that happens to almost every kid, they were close to being teenagers, so they needed to act cool, Nintendo was never about being "cool". Kids said the same thing a generation before when Sega released the Megadrive.
Yet Nintendo kept shutting their mouth with games like Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark and more recetly Bayonetta 2.
I also went through a "nintendo is for kiddies" phase when I was 12, by the way.

>But to reiterate, the PSX was both more popular and had a better library of games than the N64 but somehow gets less cred than the Sega Saturn

less credit than the Sega Saturn? dude at this point I think you're just trolling.

PS1 won, 2nd place is commonly said to be the N64 although Saturn also offered a lot of great games, most of them Japan-only. In fact, Saturn has better RPGs than the PS1, IMO, and also best arcade ports

Truth be told, I enjoyed Sega Saturn and N64 more than my PS1. Sure, PS1 had MGS, FF7 and many others but a lot of them were also forgettable, PS1 had a lot of shovelware. Most of my favorite 5th gen games are divided between N64 and Saturn, even though I have some PS1 favorites, too.

>when every other system that had games that were on par

Subjective, you just don't switch OOT for MGS, or Sin and Punishment for Einhander. You're simply missing on games in favor of being loyal to a console, company or whatever. It is not normal adult behavior. It's understandable if that's how it was when you were a kid, being forced to only play with 1 console, but now you should be adult enough to recognize that, man, yeah, it'd be cool to be able to play all them good games each console have. As I said, even though I had access to a lot of PS1 games, thanks to piracy, I enjoyed Saturn and N64 games a lot more, PS1 had a lot of good games too, but it was harder to find the good ones, due to the amount of shovelware, while N64 and Saturn had good 1st party games, Treasure games, N64 had god-tier multiplayer and Saturn had god-tier arcade ports. PS1 was kind of meh to me for the most part, since I also had PC to play most western games.
Definitely PS1 picked up my interest through its later years, around 1998/1999, but from 1996 to 1998 I barely used it.

>I don't hate the 64 itself I hate the stigma it has that it had all the best 5th gen games which is just straight up wrong.

It's not as if kids fought over this shit too much, maybe some banter back and forth but it wasn't like we were NOT children playing video games. As long as you weren't like my younger brother and collecting Pokemon Cards or Magic the Gathering at the age of 14 then you were alright for fucks sake. It's not like girls laughed at you for playing goddamn video games. Rewrite your own history and beat your chests all you want, but most of us (especially poorer families) didn't have a wide game catalog available now online, and you had to get along with other kids and go play with them to experience half of this shit.

I bet some of you fight so hard over the vidya because that's all you had.

Super Mario 64, which I've 100%'d.

Ocarina of Time, which was probably the best game I'd ever played.

Motherfucking STAR FOX 64, still fun as fuck and incredibly memorable. HE'S QUICK! BE CAREFUL!

Mario Kart 64, which I hold a ton of personal nostalgia for. I still get shivers and sometimes tear up at the credits theme

Super Smash Bros, which I played nonstop until I went to bed after getting it.

Banjo-Kazooie, which I never got very far in but had fun with. I was so scared of getting a game over...then I got older, and started getting game overs on purpose. We all know why.

Yoshi's Story, which is easy but I have fond memories of and is often still fun. Cute music, too.

F-Zero X, with super fast racing fun, that fucking awesome soundtrack (I'd already gained my affinity for metal by the time I got this one, so sometimes I'd stay at the menu or results screen and headbang for a few minutes), and motherfucking DEATH RACE mode.

Paper Mario, although I only beat that about a year ago through Virtual Console and didn't experience it when the N64 was still "current" like the rest of those games.

Rayman 2, which I didn't discover until shortly after I'd gotten Rayman 3 for GameCube but still enjoyed, despite not getting far.

Pokémon Stadium, with fun battles and that awesome announcer. WHAT'S THE MATTER, TRAINER?

Pokémon Snap, with a cool soundtrack and general comfyness. This one can be a bit addicting.

That's all I can remember. Majora's Mask is good, but not a favorite. Was massively hyped for it, but I had way more fun with Ocarina.

Well I don't know elsewhere, bt on brzil no one played n64 because it was harder to pirate games. so the ps1 flourished way faster. we were poor as fuck here.

that accounted for 50% of the ps1 overwhelming sucess here, though.

the rest was because of winning eleven, the best soccer gamer at that time by a large margin, made by Konami.

Being brazil and all, we really do love a good soccer game, and konami did the best at that time. i remember that snes had internation super star soccer and that shit was played and loved by everyone around here.

also, sony's hardware was more suitable to the inovations in high demand at that time (big storage for music and pre rendered graphics), and by insisting on cartridges, the n64 looked kinda dated when compared to shinning cd's.

Also, that fucking controller...basically half of it had no use. those fucking directional buttons were never needed by any game....it seemed just weird, as if someone wa trying too hard to be inovative...i mean, the snes controller was pretty much good tier, so why the fuck should they change the design like that?

and the coup de grace, nintendo was a fucking idiot and losing its best third parties (konami; fucking square; capcom)...the only one that was god tier was RARE...

so yeah, I agree with you. at least around here in brazil.

To say that ff7, crono cross, were 'mediocre' jrpgs, is just being bait. those game were fucking huge at their time, they actually set very high standards for future games in terms of storytelling, game mechanics, graphics and music. that's the opposite of 'mediocre'.

in the end, it was on the n64 that nintendo started to be how it is today, a plataform for forgatable third parties games, and mario and friends doing whatever...

>I've never heard anyone say anything good about that game

It has (for the time) good graphics, the game has a certain charm to it, and an interesting real time combat system with an element-based level up system.

The problem is that the game was rushed and feels unfinished, from what I've read the level up system is broken making most of the elements useless against one of them (water, I think?), I personally never made it past the first boss, never could beat him, I thought the game required too much grinding to my liking.
Also, there's no weapons to buy, there's not even currency in the game, every items is given to you by a NPC, and by the way, there's not too many NPCs in the game from what I've seen, and they don't say much.

Basically, it could have been a great game, but the developers were rushed to release it before Ocarina of Time (I assume) so the game feels barebones.

It's not bad though and if you like to experience one of the earliest full open 3D RPGs, it's worth a play, at least to check it out for a couple minutes/hours until you get bored.

The thing is that, surprisingly for a N64 game, it had good draw distance,t he game felt really big and THREE DEE, which, at the time, was a huge deal. Remember most "3D" RPGs were mostly copies of older 2D RPGs with submaps for towns and a separate map for the overworld.

By the way, Quest 64 was a really retarded name change THQ did, nd the american cover art was atrocious.
Japanese name for the game was Elltale Monsters, and european was Holy Magic Century (which makes little sense but sounds cooler than the other 2), and they used the jap box art.

All N64 games except those incompetently programmed or purposely focused on extreme close up detail (like Turok 2) should have good draw distance. The hardware is much more suitable for it than the Playstation because of perspective correction.

You can bash the crappy story, silly chars and try hard battle system, but it was an ambitious had game...and it succeeded in some of those ambitions

And International Super star soccer for n64 had fucking Allejo on brazilian attack, and Capitale and Fuerte on argentina's side...who are those fuckers?? could'nt they get the fucking license?

tHAT'Ss why the n64 soccer was played by no one. anyone who likes sports would rather play a shittier version of a game that the names and atributes of their favorite player and team...but to top it off, winning eleven was objectively a better game. Fluid controls, good balance between realism and fun, etc.

I don't know how things were on argentina, but here, n64 was the rich kids game console, everything was expensive as fuck, and only the kids with rich parents could afford the 4 controllers AND the games to play what the system had of best: 4 multiplayer games. so it remained unpopular.

Eurofag here, we missed lots of games, and what's more we suffered horrible PAL versions, however i enjoyed the fuck out of my N64

What's more, by the time the console was dying, i was running a comic store with my sister, and we used to organize parties with videogames, anime projections and shit, sometimes after those parties clients would come and ask us "what are the best N64 games? I bought/going to buy one" It was amazing, at the end, we ended with a little crowd that would come to our house to play N64 and Gamecube games after eating Ramen or chinese food.

I can't mention one favorite game, and it has been pretty hard mention only ten, i made a few bros in Stadium 2 tournaments, and motherfucking Legacy of Darkness is my most replayed game EVER.

The only regret i have with this console is the motherfucking price of EVERYTHING and not having been able to play World Driver Championship until recently. On fucking Project 64. Slowed down as hell and without sound.

It wasn't perfect, but i NEVER felt the need of buying another console, and trust me, i could have receiven a Playstation for christmas, but when my parents asked i told them to give me the money and i would buy more games.

The main reason is that the majority of people here (4 chan) are probably Americans (I am not American btw). And in the USA the N64 was a success, selling almost as much as the SNES, over 20 million units, and because many of the games were about the multiplayer, many people who didn't have the console got to play it in friend's houses, parties etc.
The N64 sold very litttle in the rest of the world.

I am Argentine, and here the Playstation was the first popular original console because of piracy. Before the Playstation the most popular console was a famiclone called Family Game.
But no one thought badly of the N64, it was seen as something for the kids of high class people who would and could spend over 100 dollars for every game.
I had a SNES, but I decided to get a PC in 1996 instead of a new console. Most of my friends who only had Famiclones got their first original console (the Playstation) in the late 90s.

I think that in the third world, Nintendo used to be seen not as kiddie but as hardcore, and like a luxury item.
The Playstation consoles had easy piracy, the most popular games like Fifa or Winning Eleven, and had other uses that justified buying one, as in, cd player or dvd player.
But if you bought a Nintendo console it meant 2 things, that you really really were into videogames and not just someone who casually played Fifa with his friends, and that you were willing to spend much of your income into videogames because no piracy till the Wii, and because importing original videogames is so expensive in south america.

Argie here too, I agree with everything you said, except you're forgetting about the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, which was the popular console of choice between the Family Game and the PS1, also due to piracy since it was actually challenging and hard to find original Genesis carts, it was all bootleg copies, and not just the carts but also the consoles were chinese bootlegs, almost identical replicas of the original Genesis, the only difference is that they didn't include the "Licensed by Sega Enterprise" text when you turned on the console.
