2057658 No.2057658 [Reply] [Original]

Can we talk about the amount of depth this game has? Seriously, its broken as hell. I still discover new things to this day. For example:
>you can tell a poison poe from a healing poe by its hue
>you can change the clothes and lipstick color of the Gerudo guard in front of the training area
>you can make blue tektites fly
>it is possible to skip the forest, fire, and water temples
>shield stab does the same amount of damage as the last attack you did before shield stabbing
>le old Zelda's lullaby fixes broken signs
If you know what you're doing, you can play this game almost backwards. In fact, I've been working on creating a glitch-based second quest because I'm bored with playing the normal way. What secrets/tricks have you discovered or found useful?

>>2057931

OK pal. There are two kinds of broken. Some games are broken in the sense that you can't get past a particular level. Action 52 comes to mind. You get to level 3, the game freaks, and that's it. That's like the opposite of deep. Sometimes you can break the game and get even more out of it, like you can with OoT

Normally, one would trigger endgame when the Sheik reveal cutscene happens after you enter the Temple of Time with all Medallions.

But the game doesn't actually check whether you have all Medallions, it only checks if you have the Spirit and Shadow Medallions, so speedrunners often skipped the first three adults dungeons and focused only on completing the final two.

Anyone interested in Ocarina should check out the speedrunning community around it. They've uncovered countless quirks in Ocarina programming that allow for obscure tricks, like Shield Sliding, Bomb Hovering, or Wrong Warping (a technique that allows one to skip huge portions of the game by loading the wrong area after a cutscene.)

>> No.2057951

>>2057947

OoT's history with the glitches is much more interesting than the speed runs themselves now.

I suggest watching runnerguy on twitch/srl occasionally, he sometimes goes into detail and shows examples of all the glitches they made use of before the most recent ones came into play.

>> No.2057962

>>2057951
Yeah, modern Any% OoT speedruns are pretty boring now. They beat the game much too quickly, with only one huge trick and a couple of small ones to show. They're only worth watching once just to witness the game being beaten in minutes.

100% and no-big-skips runs are where it's at now. Those actually showcase the madness that is OoT speedrunning.

the chest on top of gerudo's fortress with a heart piece in it contains the odd mushroom from the adult trading sequence if you infiltrate as a child (by floating over the valley with the cucco)

you can get infinite gold skulltulas by using the boomerang to fetch the token you find in a grotto outside hyrule castle, and having it return to you as soon as you step on the exit warp pad

there are gerudo faces hidden behind iron knuckle helmets

ice arrows freeze bongo bongo, basically their only real use in the game

in places with infinitely respawning overworld enemies (stalchildren in young hyrule field, leevers in the desert, possibly guays in young lon lon ranch / adult lake hylia), if you hack the game for infinite night-time and kill enough, bigger and bigger versions will start to spawn, providing bigger and bigger monetary rewards, until there are stalchildren the size of hyrule field worth 60 rupees

volvagia flashes white and makes a damage noise when you hit him with an arrow while he's in the air, but i don't know if it actually damages him or not

the nipples of the giant colossus inside the spirit temple are hookshot targets

deku sticks and deku nuts are generally the most valuable replenishable items link has, as deku nuts stun basically everything and deku sticks deal master sword damage with twice the range of the kokiri sword

deku nuts can stun ganon in the final battle if you run out of magic or arrows

Not just him, but about the backstory to ALL the creatures in OoT. For instance take the secret grotto with two Wolfos in front of the Sacred Forest maze. If you look at the ceiling of the grotto it's made of stone, implying you are underneath an architectural base that has simply been overrun by forest, making it look like a hedge maze (which from the pillars and Fairy Fountain is obvious). It's been suggested that this secret bizmuth quarry is a safe room for the royal family who once ruled the castle. This is also in keeping with the fact there is a grotto within Hyrule Castle's gates curiously enough. The question is why are those two wolfos there?
We learn in SS from Fi that Stalfos are humans that were reanimated by evil. If we assume then that all "fos" are a similar end-product of a curse, along with Fado's telling you that ALL humans who find themselves lost in the forest become "monsters," then it all makes sense.

Subsequently, this begs the question of the selective placement of all the Wolfos in the forest! Haven't you ever thought it odd that the two Wolfos lurking at the entrance to the temple are the only ones you meet in it? It's as if there are only two because they were once the courtyard guards, and the wolfos before them guards to the royal maze.

Consider the following, if that's not the case why are the poe sisters the only one of the castle's inhabitants who remained behind with it? It seems an epidemic once swept the castle as the forest grove took over turning all to animals, and evil ones who invaded later to loot it into Stalfos.

I'm actually of the opinion that the forest temple itself is meant to be "alive" and forming a mirage over a now decrepit building that resembles the broken staircase that leads to it. My theory stems from the eyeball switch after the block maze which is symbolic of the maze outside, and then the eye linked to the door brings to mind the stark contrast between the elegant interior of the forest temple and its surroundings. If you shoot the eye, the entire perspective changes to resemble how it really appears, as if to say the eye was tricking you. When you traverse through to the end of the room it leads you to, you find another warpy eye switch in a room that doesn't resemble the rest of the forest temple. Except this eye you have to shoot OPEN because it's been frozen shut.

At first glance it may seem like this is overreading, but in reality it would be thoughtless to consider that Nintendo didn't put such investment into the story of all such enemies, and that they just threw them together with minimal directive. This is an era where 3D was still being tested and every design still had a story behind it. It's the attention to detail today's games lack in their automated CGI handling and what makes older games prevalent in the lore we all know and love.

This is in the Lakeside Laboratory near Lake Hylia, inside the building if you use the iron boots to sink down to the scientists pool. There was intended to be a shark behind the bars, like this picture from a preview magazine shows, but was taken out in the final game.

Why did the scientist have a shark? I dunno.

Step 1. Play any song that will warp you, or Saria's Song.

Step 2. When the words appear that tell you what song you played, pull out the left side of cartridge just enough so that Link disappears, being careful not to freeze the game.

Now the tricky part:

Step 3. Quickly after this screen disappears, before the next screen pops up, quickly push the left side of the cartridge back in. Be careful not to pull the right side out. For those of us who are right handed, keep the right part of your hand pushing down on the right side of the cart. If done right you won't see a the little yellow line in the corner until you see some letters or words or crap.

More help: You will see some cool crap. Sometimes it just scrolls across the screen and freezes. Sometimes it scrolls all the way across the screen and stops. Sometimes it scrolls across and comes to the other side of the screen. When you see the crap, but the game does not freeze, wait for a few seconds and a little blue arrow will appear. Low and behold, just when you think it's done, sometimes 20 more screens of crap will appear. If you see the little blue square, and hit A, the text box will disappear with the game frozen. There are hundreds of different results for this code.

Here are some of my best results:

#1: "100$" and I heard a shudder as in the beginning cut scene.

#2: "00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}00'00'{Z button symbol}" and etc. This repeated and overlapped on my screen twice.

#3: "Á", then "Á", then "Á", then "Á", then "Á", then "Á", then "Ateteta" then "Á", then "Á", then "Á", then "Á"

#4: "O" Then it zoomed out and got dark.

#5: "B ïhé ä ÁhÏxÈ ëhB ïhe ÁpÈ"

#6: "drlm the Gpe't F'ipy$s"

#7. Nothing happened and I was able to walk around with just Link and the Temple of Time. No buttons. No life bar. No magic bar.

I'm playing the GC version of the game. I made it out of the forest with no sword or shield. I used a deku stick to navi dive out. I went to the fishing hole and tried to steal the rod (so that I can put the deku sticks on the B button) but I encountered a problem. I can't use the fishing rod. It won't cast, which means that I can't steal it. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I don't have a sword?

No, it doesn't. I've put deku sticks on the B button on my GC version before and they worked, but I had a sword on that file. Deku sticks on B crash the game in v1.0

I'm frustrated that the game isn't doing what I want it to do. I stayed up until 5 in the morning last night trying to create my own alternative quest, based around glitches and sequence breaking. I plan on posting the dungeon/item order here when I'm done. I'm trying to beat the game without ever picking up the Kokiri sword. I could just use Deku sticks with C, but I want to put them on the B button because its more comfortable, and it mighy (possibly) trick Mido into thinking you have a sword when you don't, and that would be interesting.

It's not finished yet. However, you should have:
>three empty bottles
>the Hylian shield
>deku nuts
>deku sticks (possibly mapped to the B button)
>the lens of truth
>silver scale
>bombchus
>Zelda's Lullaby
>Saria's Song
>Sun's Song
>Epona's Song
>Adult wallet
>Magic
>Din's Fire
>Farore's Wind
>possibly Goron bracelet
Before even entering a dungeon. The Great Deku Tree should still be closed up, Dodongo's Cavern should still be blocked, the well should still be full, and Jabu-Jabu's mouth should still be closed.

Also, the Kokiri Sword, Deku Shield, Song Of Storms, Bombs, and Fairy Ocarina are completely optional at this point.

The reason I said maybe the Goron bracelet is because it might be skipable, and getting it might cause problems in the adult portion of the game. This is a work in progress.

Also, when I work out all of the bugs and post the thread about this quest, I'll probably put on a trip to avoid confusion in the thread.
